'Some left,' I mutter through the mind-link to Vince and Steven. I knew there was that risk, but I'd hoped it wouldn't happen.
'I count ten,' Vince tells me. 'That's a lot better than we could hope for.'
It didn't make the pain any easier to swallow. If it were me they'd turned their back on, I might be able to tolerate that. I'd done enough to earn that a few times, but not my daughter.
Those wolves weren't giving her a chance to show them that she was meant to be here.
'We can talk to them later,' Steven suggests. 'See why they left.'
'It's their choice,' I mutter darkly. 'I can't force them to accept this.'
'Do you think they'll leave the pack?' Steven asks me, but I don't want to think about that yet.
