Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 28: Worries

When Sirin awoke, Spot was still asleep at Amanda's feet. The animal seemed to like her a lot more than him now, but that didn't matter, sirin was just glad that Amanda wouldn't be all alone anymore when he wasn't there.

Sirin just layed there. He didn't move at all, afraid that if he did, Amanda would know that he was awake. Then she would ask him what had happened in the living world. What was he supposed to tell her then? That he was so weak compared to the adult demons that he had no choice but to join them? Or would he tell her right away that he went back to hell purely because he was terrified that the feathers on his own wings weren't the right color? Wasn't that fear of something so small also a form of weakness?

He stared at the system in front of him to distrackt himself.

It had long been clear that other beings couldn't see it directly, the dim light it emitted wasn't even reflected off the rocks around him.

He thought it odd that the new options were under skills, even though the system had said he wouldn't get them without a higher being granting him access. The creature speaking through the system would then have been such a higher being. Perhaps this was also the reason for the feathers.

He glanced at Amanda and Spot. Amanda never slept, she couldn't. That was probably part of the curse too, never being able to find peace.

He took one last deep breath and stood up. Would Amanda be disappointed in him? Or would she be as afraid of the feathers as he is?

The tip of his tail was shaking as he walked towards her.

"Is there something wrong?" She sounded very concerned.

Sirin bit his lip, now he couldn't stay quiet anymore. He told her everything that had happened in the living world except for the exception of the system and the visit of the strange creature.

When he was done, Amanda didn't seem disappointed, just worried? He wasn't sure, people's emotions were strange and confusing unlike those of most demons.

"Oh, little one." Sirin thought her wording was odd as he was a lot taller than her now, but he assumed she just meant age and not size. "You don't have to worry so much. I know growing up can be scary, especially since you have no idea what you're going to look like once you do. I wish I could tell you everything would be okay, but I can't because I just don't know."

Sirin just nodded, still not understanding why she didn't see him as weak or useless now.

Amanda smiled at him. "Do you want to show them? Maybe I can recognize the feathers and then have a better idea why the color isn't right."

Since she asked about it, he decided that he should show his wings. It couldn't hurt much here either, the harpies wouldn't tell anyone.

He unfolded his wings and spread them as wide as he could.

Amanda shook her head. "No sorry, I don't know where those feathers can come from. Although I must say, they are quite beautiful. It would almost be a disappointment if they were colored."

Sirin folded his wings again and pressed them to his back, yet he did not hide them again. Nervusly, he scratched the back of his neck.

Amanda giggled softly when she saw that, but then she looked sad again. "Normally I would say, go back to the nest where you were born and see if you can find something unique about your eggshell. Only, I'm pretty sure you've already eaten your eggshell."

Sirin sighed. "Yes I did that. Although I can't really remember anything unique about my eggshell."

"You know what? Why don't you just stay here for a week or so. Then I can guide you when making new clothes, because that shirt won't last much longer. And when you're ready just go back to one of the living worlds, please don't let your wings get in the way of just living your life."

The rest of the day went quite slowly. Amanda had made a few jokes about how he probably liked the cambion he'd told her about. Even though he didn't even know what such emotions should feel like and tried to explain it to her.

In the end, Amanda had also persuaded Sirin to actually use his wings. Although it was quite difficult, surrounded by the countless 'trees', he had managed to fly a bit.
