Chapter 7 - The Library

"Dad where are we going?" Deamon asked trying to keep up with his father.

"We're going to Caelora. After what happened a few weeks ago and after talking to Hawks I came up with an idea to help you. I'm not smart like your mother but I do have good ideas sometimes." Savage replied smugly.

"Caelora? That's the elven city, isn't it? Why are we going there?" Deamon asked again.

"Your father called in a favor from Hawks and I so we were going to help you. Hawks also would never pass up the chance for your old man to owe her anything." Thalin said.

"Thalin has a friend who can get you into the elven library while Hawks is trying to get you into the dragon library through Noct. I know you like the books your mother gets you from the merchants and Hawks to the point you've read most of the books available to us so we came up with this idea." Savage explained.

"It's all up to the library caretaker Elnora. She has a strict personality but is very kind. That being said I come about once every week or two and your father comes about once a month so if you get the ok you may catch a ride with one of us." Thalin added.

"What kind of books does the library have?" Deamon asked curiously.

"Oh they have any kind of books you would like. Monster manuals, atlases, stories of legendary weapons and armor, heroes or even ancient powers and elements uses. You may even find some uses for the lightning element." Thalin answered. "Oh, we're just about here so we can split off from your father and he can head in for his business and we can head to the library. Savage, you can just meet us there when you're done because even if we're told no we will still be there."

Savage said goodbye and split off to head towards his meeting, so Deamon and Thalin headed to the capital center to the library. Deamon was mesmerized by all the sights, especially by the buildings. Back in the feral village the homes were either built with cut wood or were caves but here nearly every building was a part of a tree or in one. They were only a three-hour walk from the feral village but the trees in Caelora were significantly bigger, especially the Great Tree where the high elf royal family lived. The Great Tree could be seen from dozens of dozens of miles from the forest edge. The only other thing you could see from the outside of the forest was the Dragon Peak where the dragonewts live.

"Why does that place look different?" Deamon asked while pointing at a big white building.

"That's the library, the man who made it was a half-elf thousands of years ago. He used magic and runes to make that place and is nearly impenetrable." Thalin explained.

"Magic? That was in a book mom had read to me but she didn't tell me what it was except that it was like mysticism but bad." Deamon said.

"Magic is..."

"Magic is the ancient more powerful form of mysticism that has been outlawed across lands. While being more powerful it is far more dangerous and volatile in nature with it being extremely malleable and having no element. One could use an extremely high class of fire magic then turn around and use the same level of ice or water." A blonde elf said standing near the door of the library.

"Good afternoon Elnora, how have you been?" Thalin asked.

"I have been well, thank you for asking. Is this the boy I was told about? He seems kind of young to be reading especially since he's human." Elnora smugly said.

"I'm not a full human! My mom is human and my dad is the wolf leader!" Deamon said angrily

Elnora looked Deamon up and down. "My apologies, I didn't mean it negatively but humans generally can't read at such a young age and ferals usually don't delve into books."

"Deamon this is Elnora the caretaker of the library and the one whose permission you need in order to use the building and books," Thalin said abruptly.

"I...I'm sorry miss Elnora." Deamon apologized while bowing his head.

Thalin leaned down and whispered to Deamon. "Don't worry she's really nice once you get to know her and if you manage to get that far you'll see she acts like a teenager especially when flustered. It's quite adorable for someone her age to act like that."

"Someone her age...?" Deamon asked.

"She's fifteen years older than me so she is still considered a child for the most part and if you were wondering I'm thirty-three so that would make her forty-eight," Thalin said quietly.

"Well come on you two I don't have all day. I still have work to do and if I want to finish before dusk we need to start soon." Elnora said while opening the door to walk in.

"Wait test? What test?" Deamon replied worriedly.

Elnora stopped and turned around. "They didn't tell you about the test? Well it's like an intelligence and personality test, it's to deduce if you should be allowed access to our materials. I'll be asking you questions and you'll answer them to the best of your abilities, and depending on how you do will determine what you can read in this building. The test will take about an hour, then it will take about a week for Aubron and I to go over the answers to figure out how you did."

Deamon became worried because he didn't know how well he would do and didn't want to ruin this chance.

"No pressure Deamon worst case is that you won't be able to use this library but you'll still be able to use the dragon library though Hawks," Thalin said trying to calm him down.

"By the way, Noct notified us that he will be going off of our decision for your use of the dragon library so for your sake I hope you do well."

"Ok, now we should worry," Thalin said.
