"This place... is really a school." Jean had to hold herself back from giggling as she heard Damian mutter from beside her as he stared down at his math book with Laura beside him doing the same thing.
This wasn't exactly something new or unexpected. Due to the nature of their school as a place for the education of mutants, the new students tended to focus far too intensely on the mutant part and end up forgetting about the education part. It was kind of cute, in the same way a dog being confused by their reflection in a mirror.
Still, she probably should throw them a bone.
"It's not every class. We don't have enough teachers to have a class for every subject after all. For a proper education those of us who can blend among humans go to Bayville high school. Here we only take science subjects from mister McCoy and language classes from Storm." She said with a smile.
"Feels ridiculous. I was promised things about powers and some sort of dancing with flowers. If I knew math was involved I would have taken the offer of the guy with the bucket over his head." He muttered with a frown and Jean did a double take at the last part.
"Damian… did this… 'bucket head', did he have a purple cape?" She asked with a strained smile.
"Yup."
"And could he control metal?" Her smile became even more strained.
"Yup, real drama queen. Ripped my whole roof just to talk, even ruder than your teachers kicking my door down. Did the rest of the mutantkind just forgot how to knock or something?" He continued on his tirade but Jean was not listening to it anymore.
The student beside her had been scouted by Magneto, the master of magnetism and the single most powerful enemy their team had even faced; which was proven by the fact that he had kicked their collective asses by himself.
And he was talking about the guy that kicked their asses in the same way a cranky old man would talk about a particularly annoying door to door salesman.
"I… am surprised he took your rejection well."
"Took it well? No, the drama queen started sending out shrapnel and electric bolts everywhere when I said no. Had to slap him away before he ended up destroying something, or someone, actually important." He said with a grunt and Jean dropped her book with wide eyes.
He… he had to be kidding… right? There was no way a mutant that had just discovered their powers could be strong enough to defeat Magneto, an enemy the entire X-Men had failed to defeat together, and act so nonchalant about it! It must be just empty boasting!
…yet she could not actually say that he was lying. Something deep in her heart, in her soul, was telling her that he was not lying. The fact that Laura wasn't interjecting either also supported him. Still…
"You… actually beat him?" She asked, hesitantly, as she picked her book from the floor.
"Nah, not really. I just ended the battle with him away from us. If we had continued then things would likely have gone far different." He said with a shake of his head before his eyes went back to the book in his hands and his eyebrows started twitch with irritation immediately.
He was rather humble, and strong enough to send Magneto away. Which pretty much meant winning since stopping him was all that needed to do if the master of magnetism tried something nefarious.
Scott was right, they needed him on the team.
——————————
Gone far different… I wonder if that was actually true.
I had no delusions about being as strong as the best known Burning Martian, Fernus. Not every Martian was as strong as Martian Manhunter after all. I would actually have to train before I was at the level of that monstrosity. But I was quite a bit more powerful than I had thought that I would be. The electric attack from Magneto had not been exactly too bad. They had hurt whenever one of them managed to hit me, that's for sure, but it wasn't a pain I could not handle.
I wonder… exactly how strong am I at this very moment?
"Any plans to come to school with us?" Oh yeah, Jean was still here.
"Not sure yet." I said with a shrug, trying to ignore the part of my brain that was yelling at me about how I could just copy paste any kind of knowledge I wanted with telepathy.
It wasn't like the students of this esteemed institution went to that Bayville school for lessons. They went there for the atmosphere, to show that they could blend into normal society as if they were not the future equivalent of one man armies. Not exactly something I had any interest in but…
"How about you?"
"No."
…Laura definitely needed to learn how to socialize.

"So, are you going to explain how you trying to recruit a new mutant ended up with you looking like you went on a ring against Joe Louis and got beaten up like you owed him money?" Mystique, one of the greatest assassins in the world and a shape shifting mutant, asked as she looked at her boss sitting on his very large chair.
"He declined." Erik simply said with a sigh as he pulled a rather old bottle of scotch, poured some into a glass and then started to drink straight from the bottle. It did wonders to the pain he was feeling all over his body.
"And that ended up with you looking like that?" Mystique asked once more with a raised eyebrow wand Magneto glared at her before answering.
"He declined, very throughly." He was kinda salty about it, he didn't really like going through the sound barrier without consent.
"So you're saying that Charles now has a new student, that can decline your offer to the point you end up like this?"
"You do not need to worry much, something tells me that the newest student of Charles is not exactly someone that can easily be controlled. And there will be plenty of chances to make him understand the truth later on."
