Chereads / Finding Something New Again / Chapter 42 - On The Run

Chapter 42 - On The Run

Just as 6 stepped out of the room, leaving the broken bodies of the spiders behind him, the webbed wall on the side of the room exploded, crashing inward like the popping of a balloon.

Something, though 6 couldn't see what exactly it was, landed in the middle of the room, right where the spiders had been playing previously, turning their corpses into a pile of mush as the webs from the wall flew around the the room.

"Good thing I killed those spider first! Is that thingy the thingy that has a presence??" 6 shouted, speaking aloud for the first time since had entered the nest, not bothered by the fact that he killed the cute spiders now that he saw they would've died either way.

Not planning on sticking around to find out, he continued running away, straight down the passage he came from.

[Yes! Let me teleport you immediately, you cannot hope to get away from it if it has locked onto you like this!]

No noises came from behind him as he ran away for several seconds, long enough for him to get around the corner of the passageway he was running down, when something slammed through the wall just behind him as he turned the corner, ripping through all the walls that were between him and whatever it was.

As it hit the wall, 6 finally got a glance at what was chasing him, though it was only a flash before he had to continue running if he didn't wanna get crushed.

It was a small, barely the size of a fist, white spider. He briefly saw streaks of red on it, and a bit of purple on its face, before he turned around and redoubled his efforts in running away, activating [Intensified Blood Flow], even if it might cause his wound to start bleeding again.

[You need to leave immediately. You will only be delaying the inevitable if you stay here, and I cannot help you once you are already dead.]

"You're like a broken record, let me have some fun! Aren't you curious about why these things have presence?"

[That is not important for you. Living is.]

"I beg to differ! You talk about it like its such a big deal, like its so serious, but I've met several things with presence here and not one has killed me, not that I'm complaining about that bit." 6 said, running away from the spider which had not moved since it landed on the wall earlier. "Besides, if I cared about living that much, I never would've come here to begin with."

[That can always be resolved later, but if you die here, it is over.]

While still running, 6 yelled, "Maybe for you!"

As he finished shouting, he heard the spider begin to move once more, chasing after him on foot now.

6 jumped to the side as a web flew right past him, anchoring itself to the wall on the other side.

Looking back, 6 heard a voice from the spider, chocking him for a brief moment and causing him to trip over his own feet.

"Leave, leave, leave the egg. Leave the e- no one allowed in the egg. Must get out- out of the egg." The spider said.

What shocked him wasn't the spider speaking, as he had been mentally prepared for that.

No, the shocking thing was its voice. Not that it was scary, or threatening, or anything of the sort.

It was because the voice sounded like that of a toddler. Like a robotic, glitchy toddler, that had been left alone in a room for years and had nearly no idea to speak.

It stuttered through its sentence, and almost sounded cute as it spoke with its high pitched childish voice.

6 scrambled back to his feet and ran to the passage on his left, wanting out of the line of sight of the spider.

"Trivrium what the absolute fuck is up with that thing? 6 asked. He had gotten a closer look at it when he heard it speak.

The eyes were purple, and it had streaks of red on its otherwise pure white body. The red looked almost like an infection taking over the spiders body, like it was spreading and corrupting it.

But the fangs of the spider were the creepiest.

They came to a blood red tip, as if they were storing the blood of all of their victims in the tip of them. When combined with the childish voice, it painted a grotesque image, straight out of horror movie.

And the weirdest thing, which 6 just realized, was that he could see the color.

The little spider chasing him was the only real thing with color that he had seen in the entire nest, though he had no idea why that thing appeared with color if the rest didn't.

There were way too many unexplained things about the nest.

[No idea. Anything with presence shouldn't have issues communicating outside of special exceptions.]

Clearly, Trivrium had given up on convincing 6 to leave the nest for now, either because he was too damn stubborn or because she too was too intrigued by what was happening with the spider.

"Hey buddy, I'll leave the nest if you show me the way out!" 6 shouted behind him as he ran.

[So you'll leave with him, but not me? Sexist.]

"Shut it, I'm just buying time." 6 whispered under his breath. "How do you even know its a male?"

[Who says male and female are the only two options here?]

Rather than hearing an answer from the spider, he heard the web wall behind him burst into pieces again, the spider just missing him as it crashed through the nest wall into another passageway entirely.

"Why the fuck does it make such a large hole when its body is so tiny? Couldn't it just like, make a little pin prick hole and stab right through me?" 6 said, cocking his head to the side as he stopped to look through the hole the spider made, seeing like stand motionless on the ground.

[Why would you give it advice?]

The second he saw it start fidgeting once more, the slight twitch of one of its legs, 6 resumed his running, clearly not taking the spider very seriously.

He couldn't see, or even hear for that matter, Trivrium, but he could've sworn he felt her roll her eyes at his actions.

It wasn't that he was playing around with his life, or that he wanted to commit suicide by spider, but it was too odd to not at least feel it out.

Presence wasn't something he could deal with at his level, at least according to Trivrium, yet here he was dodging and running circles around a spider with it.

Even Trivrium was baffled, possibly more than 6 himself.

To the extent that she checked over 6's profile, as well as examining his genetic information, to see if there was anything wrong with the man, but she found nothing out of the ordinary even after several checks.

Of course, he never thought for even a second that he could kill the thing. That would truly be suicide. It seemed familiar somehow, which struck him as odd.

He had no idea that he had likely subconsciously felt the presence of the spider when it was chasing him away from the nest after he killed the large spider which gave him his first reward.

Though it had been too far away for Trivrium to notice, as she hadn't even been truly paying attention to the mission going on here, it was different for 6. He was here, and his sense were aware of things that he be a threat to him, even if he himself wasn't.

[Bring it to other spiders if you can. I want to see how it will respond.]

"I am really on board with you, I totally am, but I'm just not sure I'm getting paid enough for that." 6 said.

[I'll ensure that the planet here compensates you for the lacking information supplied.]

"Deal, but we're doing it my way." 6 said as he made a detour, away from the passage he had been running down.

He began running towards one of the large caverns that houses a good number of spiders, though it was nowhere near as many as he would've like for this.

While the spider was definitely still following him, as checking with Trivrium confirmed that the presence was still tagging behind him, for some reason it was getting further away, and it had even come to a stop.

Rather than believe he got lucky and lost it, 6 figured it was probably charging up for something else.

As he entered the cavern full of spiders, dotting the webs surrounding the entire area, 6 did something he had been waiting to do ever since he entered the nest.

Right as the spiders turned to him, setting their eyes upon the intruder who had trespassed into their resting place, 6 let out the loudest scream he possibly could, enough to, in his own imagination, burst the eardrums of every spider in the room.

If...if they had eardrums, 6 thought, realizing his fantasy may have been a tad immature.
