Chereads / A Rare Precious Breed / Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

After dropping those girls off, I went straight home where I found my mom busy cooking. I walked into the house through the kitchen door. My mom was just busy on the stove with her apron on. As soon as I walked through that door, she looked at me with a smile.

"And here comes my handsome boy," mom said.

"Hey, ma," I replied.

She stopped whatever she was doing then gave her attention to me.

"How was your first day in college?" mom asked "have you made any friends?"

"I don't really want to go back there," I replied "why don't I learn how to be a hunter like dad used to be?"

"Times have changed sweety," mom said "we live in the world where we have to coexist with the humans, you just have to learn more about them and how they do things. Get yourself some human friends."

"Yeah right," I sighed.

"This is for your own good son," mom said "and for you to fit in we have to make sure that the animal in us does not control us, which is why we do a lot of humanly staff now."

"I hear you," I replied "where's dad?"

"Check him in his favorite room," mom replied as she was getting back to her work.

Dad's favorite room was the entertainment room, where we played all kinds of video games and watched all these different movies. My clan was the richest clan when it came to the werewolves. My grandfather was once the leader of all the werewolves and that position was supposed to be taken by my dad since he was the first born but after attacking the humans a year ago, he was stripped off the kingship position and now there's no one that rules our kind. I walked into the entertainment room and my dad gave me a stare and then carried on with what he was doing. As soon as my eyes saw the scar on his face, I remembered the conversation that I had with the girls earlier.

"Good day dad," I greeted him.

"Good day, son," dad replied "sit."

His tone has always been intimidating so I sat next to him and waited to hear what he was going to complain about next. Sometimes I wish that my dad could at least laugh a little or even crack a joke. He glanced at me and then he took a deep sigh.

"You know son," he said "I want you to be like me, have courage and be the next king in this region. And when you become king don't forget your nature, you might be trying to fit in with the humans but you will always be a werewolf."

My dad has never admired humans and I always wondered why, I glanced at him in silence.

"I hear you," I nodded.

"I might buy you all these humanly games and cars but deep down you are a hunter kid," dad added "you are supposed to hunt humans not coexist with them."

"Dad can I ask you a question?" I replied.

"Yeah," he replied.

"About the scar on your face," I said "do you ever regret what you did to that man?"

My dad glanced at me and sighed again.

"You know son" he said "no matter how hard you run from your true nature it will always catch up with you. The only thing I regret is that I lost my rights as a king but I don't regret ripping that man's head off."

My heart was beating fast the minute he said he doesn't regret ripping that man's head off, this proved that this man was a proud werewolf and he was not willing to compromise for anything. He really hated the fact that I was attending a human school, walking in my human form for hours and speaking the human language. He was only compromising just to make my mother happy.

I spent hours with my dad in that room, listening to how he used to hunt when he was my age. My parents had different plans for me and that was creating a little bit division. Dad imagined me as a great worrier while mom imagined me as one of those civilized citizens, she saw me doing those human jobs one day. Since the werewolves were banned from harming any human being, I was compelled to go to a human school and do things the ways humans do them.

Precious's P.O.V

Although I pretended as if I didn't like riding in Joshua's Mustang, I really loved it, I really loved almost everything about the moment we shared earlier today. My mom wasn't around when I came back so I took the keys from our neighbor who curiously glanced at the mustang and then asked whose car it was. She was definitely going to tell my mom that she thinks that I am into sugar daddies since she loved assuming a lot.

I sat on my bed thinking about Josh and how kissing him could've felt, how being held by him was like. I imagined those firm muscles squeezing me, at the same time as I was fantasizing about Josh it felt weird because I never felt this way about a boy before. I took my phone and scrolled through the numbers looking for his, I came across it and my mind was telling me to just tell him that we could on a date tomorrow after class but I couldn't do that just yet. I decided to call Angela who would definitely tell me to call Josh and confirm that date. After a few minutes of ringing, she picked up.

"Tell me that you are going to a date with Josh," Angela answered the phone call.

"What if I said I am not?" I asked.

"Then I would disown you," she giggled.

"I like him though," I replied "you know that boys disgust me but this one is just so different, so reserved and disciplined."

"And those muscles," she said "friend, if you let this one go, I'm going to disown you for real."

"Should I call him?" I asked.

"You haven't called him?" she replied "Precious, the vultures will snatch him right in front of you. What are you waiting for?"

"Yeah, I guess I should." I replied.

"Should I come to your house and call him on your behalf?" she said.

"No, don't," I replied glancing at the door and found my mom silently standing there.

"Now call him," Angela said.

"See you in the morning friend," I said then hung up.

I turned and looked at my mom wondering if she heard everything I said to Angela.

"How long have you been standing there?" I asked her.

"Long enough," she replied.

"Mom, you can't sneak on me like that," I said "you promised that you won't be listening to my private conversations from now on."

"The door was open," mom replied.

"Still, ma," I sighed.

Mom brushed my hair with her palm.

"How was your first day in college?" mom asked.

I blushed "it was good," I replied.

"You met a boy that you like?" mom asked "that smile says so."

I nodded without words coming out of my mouth and my mom smiled back at me. She was probably realizing that I was no longer the little girl she used to carry around.

"How did it feel when you met dad for the first time?" I asked.

"I always felt butterflies in my stomach every time he appeared," mom replied "your dad was a charmer, he knew what words to use. He managed to take me on a date the first day we met."

I laughed and glanced at her as she was speaking, you could see that she missed her husband through her eyes.

"You miss him?" I asked.

"Yeah, every day," mom replied "I miss the dances, I miss the movie nights and his jokes. I won't forget how his face looked like when he held you for the first time. And when he saved us from a werewolf when you were just 5 years old. Your dad was the man I prayed for and I doubt if I will ever another man like him."

I looked at mom who was getting all emotional at that moment and realized that she really missed her husband. I wondered why she mentioned werewolves in each and every story she told, sometimes it made me want to believe that werewolves existed. At times I would disagree with the werewolf part of the story but right now was not the time to disagree with her because she was just missing her husband.

"Sorry for being emotional," she said "come to the kitchen I brought takeaways."

"It's okay, I'll be right there." I replied.

Mom tried so hard to hide the fact that she was crying at that moment, sometimes I overhear her crying in the middle of the night. It was hard for her to move on and accept the fact that dad was no longer coming back. The movie nights and everything she mentioned was gone with my dad. Mom kissed me on my forehead.

"I love you." she said.

"I love you too." I replied.

She walked out of my room as I followed her, I was not sure that my mom was ready to see me dating for a change. I was going to agree on going to a date with Josh tomorrow after class and I was sure about what I wanted now.
