"Pick the call, please!" Kyra paced right and left, her nails almost becoming her midnight snack. Her eyes glanced at the frog laying dead on her pillow, and she cried in frustration.
She tried dialing Dr. Jane as she didn't know how to treat him! Who would when it was a frog!!
"Pick up, please!" She cried pacing again and almost after her 10 trials, Dr. Jane from the Medic branch in their KNIGHTS received the call.
"Uncle Jane, I am in trouble!"
"Kyra, it's midnight!" She heard him grumble and cut off the call.
She called again, and when he picked annoyed, she almost cried out in fear.
"Kevin, I mean the frog fell off, and it is not waking up!"
"Wh-what?" Dr. Jane sat up from his bed, almost screaming that his wife woke up at the loud noise.
"What do you mean?" He asked, wearing his slippers, and walked out. Damn, this girl never missed getting on the trouble train!
Kyra frantically explained the main points, and his brows creased in tension.
"What what should I do now?"
"First, take a deep breathe," And when he felt her groan, he said, "You need to calm down first!"
And when she followed his command, he quickly added, "Go check his pulse! Or at least his breathing first!"
"Okay," Moving to his side, she sat on the bed and bit her lip as she wasn't sure where to find a pulse, on a damn frog's body. She moved to the other option and placed her finger near his tiny nostrils!
"Uncle, I am not sure if he is breathing!" She mumbled, crying as her finger didn't feel anything except for coldness around his body.
It was burning hot till now, and now it was weirdly cold. Wait, is he dead now and turning into a frog corpse?
"Fine, try placing your finger on its neck, I mean just below on its back."
Turning the frog around, Kyra tried placing her finger over its skin, but she felt nothing and her cry made him sigh out loud.
"Is there some medicine? Something like that could instantly wake him I mean it up?" Kyra asked pulling her hair, as her stress levels wear making her dizzy now.
"I am not sure Kyra," Jane mumbled scratching his brow.
"Then why do you even call yourself a doctor?" Kyra grumbled, crying as her eyes didn't leave the frog's cold body.
"I don't treat animals, damn it! Not at least a frog!" Jane replied with an irritated tone, and immediately blinked as his mind started to work.
Wait, frogs were taken as pets by many people, right? Oh, yes! He needs to contact some veterirarian friend!
"Kyra, I will send you an address, you hurry there asap!" He said and Kyra nodded, getting up from her bed.
"He is a vet nearby, so I think he will be helpful. I will reach there soon!" Jane added, walking inside to a grab coat and drive to the location.
"Can he cover up if he is dead?" Kyra asked searching for her wallet, and made him almost stop at her question.
"Hurry now!" He yelled shaking his head as that girl had no sympathy for Kevin. Rather than his messed-up health, she was more worried about burying his death!
----
Little Pow hospital, Jane's friend chamber.
"We have cleaned up his stomach, and he is alright for now," Andy mumbled walking out and Kyra sighed out loud.
"It looks like his body is under lots of stress, and he ate very much a few hours ago." He added looking at Kyra, and then at his friend.
"To add up, it looks like that little thing is under depression if I should put in human words. His body is fragile, his limbs are totally weak, and his eyes almost are shrunken out. It might be having a detaching syndrome in our words from the owner, and I suggest leaving it in some good company. Maybe back into its habitat?"
Kyra nodded though nothing he said made sense. Jane had made up a story that Kevin was her pet, and revealed nothing about Human-to-Frog transformation.
"Seriously! If you cannot take care of it, why do you even adopt it for no reason?" The doctor yelled and Kyra just stared at him, blankly.
"I know, it is important for you magicians to have a pet, to experiment on it but come on, at least not treat it like a non-living thing! That little soul as suffered so much because of you, and look at you sitting all unbothered and ignorant!"
Kyra blinked as his words weren't making any sense and Jane just sighed out loud. His friend was getting all emotional again. He had a soft spot for animals, and since these days kids only adopted pets for their projects, specifically from magicians' race, he could understand him but Kyra didn't belong in that category.
This girl hadn't even adopted a pet in her graduation days as she felt they were too troublesome. Even when her grades were at stake because her pet would decide some of her skill and ability marks.
"It's not my pet, to begin with," Kyra said as his words hurt her pride. Come on, not every magician treated their pets recklessly. Witches especially developed a strong bond with their pets, and she was too afraid of losing her pet that she didn't adopt anything till now.
"Yeah, its actually her friends pet who is out of the town now, haha!" Jane tried to cover up as Kyra had almost blown out his story.
"Anyways, let's keep him under observation until tomorrow! If he wakes up, you guys can take him home." The doctor mumbled not dragging the issue anymore.
"Can we get a separate ward?" Kyra suddenly asked as he got up to leave and he blinked in confusion.
"You are in a vet not some big hospital, miss!" He commented as her expression looked very serious.
"Oh, you don't have!" Kyra nodded and said nothing else as she wasn't sure how vets usually worked.
"Maybe we will one day if we get funds," The doctor forced a smile before walking inside the other zone of the hospital.
"We cannot even see him?" Kyra asked as soon as he left and Jane just sighed.
"I will go inside and stay with him, you wait here!" He got up to leave but Kyra also got up and held his hand.
"I will come with you,"
"Kyru, Vets work differently from hospitals. They have some protocols, and you should follow them." And when she pouted, he added, "You wait here, and I will inform of you as soon as he wakes up. Alright?"
Kyra sadly nodded, and let him walk inside the treatment room while she walked towards the waiting room.
Sitting on the chair, she looked at the time and sighed. She tried to sleep, but her brain didn't as it was fully occupied with Kevin's health.
She scrolled through her phone, paced in the room, sat back, walked outside, did some stretches and spent the whole night repeating that cycle. And unlike the other nights, this seemed very long that her eyes were literally dry and sunken.
Sctraching her hair, she yawned again and scrolled through her phone. It was almost 6 in the morning, and she wasn't sure if Jane had been sleeping inside unlike her. Why the hell wasn't he calling her?
Drinking another glass of water, she threw the cup in the dustbin and walked outside. Her eyes feel on the treatment room, then at the doctor's office but she still stood to her ground and denied to barge inside and ask how much time she still needed to wait.
Suddenly, Jane came out of some other room, and he rushed to her, "He is awake now!"
And she sighed at his words. Her eyes almost tearing up as she felt her future still having some hopes.
"I will get him, and no arguing until we get out!" Jane said knowing that she would fight the moment Kevin was in front of her eyes, and when she frowned, he pressed, "Is it clear?"
"Alright, okay!" She agreed with a sigh, and later added, "I will get my car ready!"
Yes, she wanted to empty this place as soon as possible! And they still needed to go to work!
----
A few minutes later.
Kyra suddeny stopped her car, and Kevin who was in a pretty basket kept beside the steering wheel, blinked in confusion as his body collided with the small basket.
He had been completely dug inside his thoughts, that he didn't realize what was happening around him since Kyra had also chosen to stay silent.
"Do you have any idea what I went through?" Kyra yelled, her hands clutching the steering wheel as she glared at Kevin.
"Leave it, for fuck's sake, who asked you to eat like a pig? You are a frog now Kevin, not a human anymore! So please, behave like such and stop giving everyone a hard time!" Kyra vented out and her every word pricked him pretty strong.
Soon tears started forming in his eyes. Yes, she was right! He was frog now and he should give up on living! And the last night's incident started tearing him up. He was almost on the death bed, the way this frog body started shivering, loosing its ennergy and almost died when Kyra just rubbed it thinking as a fly, everything was so painful and slow that he had no hopes of opening his eyes again.
"Yes, you are right!" Instead of arguing with her, Kevin nodded sniffing as he felt misearble, ashamed with his own existence. He was left not even with a tiny hope to live anymore, less transform back into human!
"Hey, Hey, why are you crying now?" Kyra awkwardly asked and with a bit hisitation, she took him in her hand as he was literally crying very loud.
"I am done with this, Kyra!" Kevin sobbed, sniffing as he looked at her with a hurt expression, "I cannot live anymore."
"Hey, don't say that!" Kyra grumbled, and giving it a thought, she slowly patted it. Kevin looked really low and she for the first time, felt like consoling him.
"I will help you out," She added, continuing to pat his head as he cried like a baby, "I will make sure to find a cure soon, and help you transform."
"Didn't I already say that I won't run away form you?" And when he looked up at her, she added, "I promise to take full responsibility."
Taking a tissue, she reluctantly wiped his tiny frog face carefully.
"And I am sorry for being harsh." And when he blinked at her in shock, she added throwing away the tissue, "I mean Its very difficult to be in your shoes and I promise I won't trouble you in future. I will take full care of your every need! I swear!"
She smiled when Kevin stopped crying soon. Maybe her words were soothing though she wasn't sure she could keep her promise. Take care of him? Bloody hell, she was out of her mind!
