Chapter 3 - Battle for the best spot -1

Crime Unit-3H, Homicidal Branch, KNIGHTS Organisation.

"Attacks on humans are worsening in New Manston. A girl, aged 21 was found dead on the imperial highway and reports suggest that she was attacked by a wild creature of unknown origin. The KNIGHTS agents have taken over the crime scene and here is the live report,"

"We have informed the family and paid our respects to the deceased girl. Updates of this case will be regularly posted on our website under Crime Code 361, you can collect details there. Thank you."

And the moment Chief Adams ended and walked through the bunch of reporters, Kevin sighed before turning off the big television that spread over the entire wall in front of him. Others who were also present in the lounge sighed hearing the news.

"Are you sure you were accurate with your psychometry?" One of his teammates asked and Kevin nodded leaning back on the couch. They were at it doubting his skills again but he was too tired to walk out Closing his eyes, he tried to get some rest.

He needed to get over that scene which was now making him feel dizzy. It was the first time in his entire career he had ever touched a body without a soul. And that thought made him shiver in agitation.

"Is it really possible? Like I mean how can a soul get swallowed up?" His co-workers started again and he sighed out loud. Of course, they won't believe him just like how they didn't when Kyra first tried making a fuss out of it.

"Yeah, it is! Tales have stories about how Soul Eaters brutally fed on souls, especially young and weak souls. I think those creatures have returned and we might be having an apocalypse soon."

They continued talking about the same stuff which made him uneasy. The more they brought the soul word, the more was he feeling sorry for that girl.

"Hey, Hey! That's not the hot news! I have something spicy!" George, a senior detective in their unit walked inside and smirked sitting across from Kevin.

Looking at Kevin, he continued, "I heard that our smarty-pants was the first to bring this under the light. She even dared to ask for a grim reaper."

And that made everyone in the lounge gasp. Kyra was a hot head and she proved it once again in this case.

"Chief Adams denied, at first, but in the end, since no options were available, they went with her request, and turns out she won again. Haha!" George continued indirectly taunting Kevin for his shortcomings.

"I think she will finally get the chance to lead a case. No one can snatch it this time, I bet on it." George spoke again making Kevin sigh out loud.

"Oh, but I heard even Kevin as a chance this time. They probably need a lot of his help to jot this down."

"I doubt that! He is a human after all and needs protection all the time. We don't know what race the culprit belongs so I am sure Chief Adams gonna try protecting our puppy again, like every time, haha!" George added with a smirk. Others shared concerned glances when Kevin clenched his fist in frustration.

"Kevin?" Anna, a senior detective, a higher rank holder in the hierarchy walked inside looking for him. Most of the workers immediately got up to greet her.

Gesturing for them to sit down, she sighed looking at George who was busy smiling at her and turned towards Kevin.

"Chief wants to see you. Right Now!" She demanded and he immediately got up to leave. He was tired of this toxic comparison between them.

As soon as they walked out, everyone inside sighed in relief. Kevin always ignored Senior George's nasty statements and they really admired his patience.

If it was Kyra in his place, she would have punched George and permanently stitched his mouth.

----

Chief Adam's office.

Entering the office, Kevin greeted Andrew with a bow and sat on the couch with Anna. His depressed expression made Andrew sigh but he didn't comment on it. They had worse things to handle at the earliest.

"Where is that brat?" He asked looking at Anna who shrugged in reply,

"She is unreachable."

"Huh, she makes me worried now!" Chief Adams uttered massaging his temples. He was sure about getting what was called a heart attack by humans because of her, though he was a 293 years old vampire.

"Let me call her." Anna took out her phone seeing the old man struggle.

"She isn't picking. Is she?" Chief Adams huffed out loud as Anna dialed again. Even his fangs came out in frustration.

After a few more trials, Kyra finally answered the call making Anna sigh out loud.

"Where are you?" She asked putting the call on speaker.

"Right in front of you."

And swish, Kyra walked out of a purple halo with a few cups in her hand. The portal closed, and her pleasing smile made the three frown.

"Your bubble tea with extra cheese foam." Passing one of the cups to Anna, she then smiled at her Chief, widely and so adorable that Andrew felt his goosebumps rise.

"And this is for you, Chief Adams. I hope your mood gets better with it." Placing the cup on his desk, she smiled taking a seat right angle to Anna. And when she felt Kevin staring at her, she stared back at him before smiling at her Chief.

She needed to be kind to get the best spot in this case. And these beverages were just a small sweet bribe.

"We have the dashcam footage." Chief Adams said getting up from his seat and Anna took the remote on the front desk and played it for them. Taking the cup, Andrew first smelled it before sipping the tea. It was his favorite iced chai tea and he couldn't resist having it.

Kyra smiled brightly as even Anna drank her coffee. Though she knew they didn't add any value to their final decision, she still couldn't help but pull these little strings to win their hearts. She needed to be the lead this time, at all costs!

Soon the video started to play and Anna forwarded it to the main part. They could barely see anything because of the rain but thanks to their AI division who had tweaked it a bit. They even added more visuals helping them get a better idea of what was happening in that heavy storm.

"What's that?" The girl wondered as she slowed her car.

And to their surprise, a well-built tunnel magically appeared in front of the car. It was ash-grey in color with creepy green grasses spread over it.

The dead girl dared to slowly drive inside and heard her struggles with the car, "Why isn't it working?"

"Shit! Come on, dammit!" They heard her attempts to pull the jammed gears.

And after a few seconds, something jumped on her car and Kyra leaned forward in suspicion. A creature growled out loud but she needed more than its voice to identify its race and origin.

And when it jumped down in front of the car, the girl shrieked out loud. And at the scene, even Kevin leaned closer in tension. It was when the culprit would show its face in most of the scenarios and they needed to take a good look to identify its race.

It was raining harshly and the cracked-up glasses of the car didn't give them a good picture but when the creature came closer, very close to the dashcam, they held their breaths. It croaked its neck to stare at the camera, and suddenly it smiled at the camera. Its yellow eyes started glittering like burning shards of ice, and then,

Tick!

The dashcam turned off and the screen completely went blank.

"Ahh, it's creepy as shit!" Kevin shivered leaning back on the couch. He rubbed his arms in discomfort recalling the creature's creepy smile.

Those sharp fangs slowly dripped out, its eyes gleaming gold even in that rain and that disgusting dark blue tongue ran out over its fangs while looking at the camera. Argh, it was awful! Kevin shook away his thoughts with a foul expression.

But to Kyra, what caught her attention was its snow-white fur, which glowed with a vivid bluish aura so pure it nearly seemed like ultraviolet when it jumped down on the car. It was a rare character and that only made it harder for them to guess its race.

"A tunnel suddenly forms in the middle of a highway and vanishes along with the culprit, the car gets jammed, the dashcam gets defected, and the creature turns out to be something we can't even decipher!" Chief Adams said in one breath and later looked at his three juniors.

"This case needs Power, Courage," He said looking at Kyra and then turning towards Kevin, he continued, "Patience and Willpower."

And then looking at Anna, he finished, "And I believe Anna has all these traits, and she is capable of leading this one as well, very successfully if I might add!"

Kevin and Kyra both felt a bucket of ice falling over their head. They were depressed but also happy to have Anna as their leader.

"But unfortunately she had denied to take over this case." And Andrew's statement made the two blink in surprise and they looked at Anna who sighed out loud.

"She has her reasons and I cannot force her to do it." He added sitting back on his chair and looking at the three of them, he continued, "So I had asked her to select anyone from her Juniors Squad to lead this case on her behalf."

And Kyra eyes sparkled in glee. Of course, her sister would pick definitely pick her!

"Did you decide Anna?" He asked though Anna needed more time to pick any one of them.

After a few minutes, Anna took a deep breath and nodded,

"I think Kevin is best suited for this case."
