Chereads / The Humans’ Abomination / Chapter 15 - Change

Chapter 15 - Change

A beautiful city bursting with life was above the facility holding Cinder, Victoria, and Alina. Everything seemed normal, so what were the doctors talking about? What was coming that would somehow drastically change everyday life?

Well, for starters, the once clear blue sky turned pitch black with lighting as the only source of light for the sun disappeared. The earth started quaking uncontrollably, causing mass panic amongst the enormous crowds of people. Before long, rain began to descend from the sky, but this wasn't water.

Everything this liquid came in contact with began to change; the trees became enormous, the animals started killing each other with blood-crazed eyes, and sixty percent of humanity began eating other humans ruthlessly regardless if the rain touched them, it seems the air also carried whatever change this rain brought.

As for the other forty percent of humanity, they got a notification in the form of a black screen with white letters saying, 'This world has now begun ascension, mortal chains will now be released allowing all life forms to ascend.' After finishing, every intelligent life form was faced with another screen showing their capabilities in the state of stats.

***

This screen also appeared in front of Cinder, Victoria, and Alina. Unlike the surface, everyone in the facility didn't feel a thing. Of course, the doctors and scientists had an inkling of what was taking place, but even they weren't prepared for what was to come.

Cinder was doing his morning workout when these strange texts appeared in front of him.

'What is this?' Cinder couldn't make heads or tails of this strange occurrence like the rest of the world. Before Cinder could understand the situation, his invincible front door opened with no one presently there; this was a first.

After cautiously walking towards the door, Cinder's abnormal hearing kicked in. Endless screams and moans were all Cinder could hear throughout the facility, Cinder with a curious yet still somehow lifeless expression, started to tour the facility hallways towards the riots at a leisurely pace.

Before long, Cinder encountered a changed human, but this posed no threat, so Cinder leisurely examined the human if that's what this being still was, with lifeless grey skin, white pupils, and irises. Judging by his torn lab coat, this ex-scientist started wandering towards Cinder with an insatiable hunger within his gaze'.

Before this ex-scientist could reach Cinder, his head flew across the room before hitting the floor. Cinder, thinking that was it, continued his stroll, but before he could wander too far off, a sphere of grey light came out of the dead scientist and floated into Cinder's chest. A screen quickly informed Cinder he killed a 'soulless human' and received five experience points; this only further confused Cinder. Deciding to ignore the notification, Cinder continued his journey; Cinder's priority was to get information on what was taking place and, more importantly, his little brother's location.

'Was there a containment breach?' Cinder thought before discarding the idea. 'Unless there was a spy within the staff, which would make things interesting, but this is also dubious. Also, everything started when this screen appeared; there has to be a connection.' Cinder kept walking while lost within his thoughts.

Fifteen minutes after Cinder killed the ex-scientist, Victoria and Alina met up, following each other's signal.

With confusion on her delicate face, Alina said, "What's going on?!"

"Like I would know!" Responded Victoria with the same confusion written on her beautiful face.

Screams of Doctors, Nurses, Scientists, and everyone alive could be heard in the distance with their enhanced hearing, but this wasn't what caught their attention. The girls could sense Cinder getting further away in another direction.

"Where's he going?" Looking in a specific direction with curious eyes, asked Alina.

"Probably trying to find an exit." Said Victoria while also looking at Cinder's location.

Finally deciding to round up their last compatriot before trying to escape, Alina and Victoria ran off in Cinder's direction. Just like Cinder, these girls didn't fear anything within this facility, especially together.

Little did they know Cinder wasn't trying to escape, at least not yet; Cinder needed to know the whereabouts of Leylin before even thinking of freedom; otherwise, what was the point of going through all of this hell and torture.

***

Nick and Natalie could be seen running from a mindless Chris with drool pouring out his open mouth in another part of the facility.

"Huh, huh, I should've worked out more!" Said Nick before stumbling and subsequently falling face-first into the floor.

Natalie turned her gaze towards Nick before she continued sprinting down the corridors.

"...Figures." Nick felt a shape pain in his left ankle while standing up. "Today just isn't my day." Said Nick before becoming his ex-superior's bloody lunch.

Hearing the faint sounds of flesh being torn apart, Nataline knew she was alone, at least for now. Slowing down her pace to catch a breath, Nataline pulled up her smartphone for directions; she was lost after running in a random direction.

"Why is this happening now? I thought we had more time, dammit." Natalie mumbled in frustration under her breath.

Finally, pulling up a work map app on her device, Natalie started cautiously wandering towards one of the three exits in the whole facility.

'I wonder if Adam, Eve, or Lilith have escaped, probably not. After I escape, I need to come back with reinforcements for them and all my data banks."

Would Natalie escape with all the 'soulless humans' walking about trying to eat any living creature only fate could tell.

***

Above ground was hell on earth, blood was everywhere, the screams never stopped until the sounds of flesh being torn apart were heard, signaling the end of human life.

The once beautiful city was no more.
