Back in the hospital, everyone was busy looking for Mamle. Because of her, everything came to a standstill. Life could be compared to a state of mourning for a loved one who had passed. Away. Everywhere Dome turned, people pointed fingers at him. Doctor Fordjuor forbade everyone from speaking to journalists about the situation. That would be bad publicity for the institution. Dome felt so distressed he almost fell into a relapse of his catatonia. What had happened to Mamle overnight? Could she have run away? Did she not like it here? Why would she not confer with him first before running away? Was she tired of seeing him? Was she not interested in having the phone from the company anymore? Doctor Fordjuor saw how distressed Dome was and consoled him like he would do his own son.
Mamle was dear to everyone's heart and to his too. Nothing would stop him from doing his best to find her.
Amihere, upon hearing the news, got to the hospital as fast as he could.
"For a moment, I thought she was with you," Dome told Amihere, finally lightening up. At least, someone else could feel the way he did.
"I wouldn't encourage that," he replied. "Although she's dear to my heart. I would prefer that she be kept in the best place where she would get the best of care." Seeing how much Amihere cared for Mamle made his heart miss a beat. Was he in love with her too? Would he be able to match him boot for a boot? The possibility of getting back together again with her seemed elusive after much deliberation regarding the situation they found themselves in now. What if Amihere rescued her again? Would she remember all the good he, Dome has done for her? Compared to Amihere, his good works were just the tip of the iceberg. Old flames could light up the fire between Amihere and Mamle once again.
"I will not interfere in your relationship if I don't have to, Dome," Amihere said to him. "I can see the worry all over your face. I know you love her. I do care for her too, but I won't be cruel enough to take her away from you." Dome heaved a sigh of relief and looked up at Amihere.
"Let's put our heads together and find a solution to this problem. It will do us a lot of good."
Although Doctor Fordjuor did not want the case to be publicized, it was important to involve the police since no one could rule out the possibilities of foul play. Dome had many questions to answer from the police investigators. For a moment, he was the major suspect.
"Why would I want her dead?" he asked the investigator, frustrated after several hours of interrogation. "She's dear to my heart. Talk to my friends who would not stop at anything to tear us apart." His outburst gave them an idea.
"Give us the names of your friends and where they live. We must interrogate them too." Dome thought this issue was going too far. Now, his friends were going to be involved?
"My friends will hate me forever for this," he said undertone.
"If they truly loved you, their actions wouldn't have landed you here in this institution," said the investigator, looking up at him with so much empathy that embarrassed Dome to the core.
