Chapter 20 Fresh air

Dome held Mamle's hands.

Where are you taking me? She asked.

Somewhere interesting, he replied

I'm not going! She protested.

Then there'll be no one beside you. I'm going alone. Dome's words seemed to make a great impact. Certainly, this woman did not like being all by herself. Dome also took note of her reaction, glad that he was getting somewhere with his argument.

"Do you want to go?" Mamle protested like a little child turning her head from one side to the other and twisting it sideways as if she was going to fall. It reminded him so much of his childhood.

"The betrayers are coming," said Dome suddenly. Mamle took to her heels, off to the hospital gate. The guards stopped her and called the nurses. One of their patients was on the loose.

"What happened to her?" they asked.

"Let's hear from that man over there." Referring to Dome. He may know better. He seemed to have been chasing her.

"Dome!" yelled one of the nurses. "What did you do to her?"

"I tried to convince her to go out with me but she was adamant so I frightened her."

"Please don't do that. We will convince her for you. See how much this lady is panting all because of you!"

Mamle did go out with Dome after much convincing. Doctor Fordjuor was off duty. It would have been easier if he had been around to help. Dome was grateful.

"I'll buy something for you, Nurse Adzo," he said gratefully as they walked hand in hand. It would be too early to conclude as to whether Mamle held his hands because she did not know the way or because she was growing to like him.

Dome blindfolded Mamle throughout the journey, regretting what he did as the driver sped through the empty streets. It could have been a time for great sightseeing had her eyes been wide open. That error could be fixed another time anyway. Soon, it was time to alight from the vehicle. It was no longer advisable to keep her blindfolded lest he draws attention to himself and her. They did not seem to be ready for that. Her mind needed to recover from all the pain she felt. It would not be prudent to take her through worse experiences than she had been through. Mamle alighted from the vehicle wishing she was privy to the whole journey.

"Where are we?" she asked reverently. "It's you again, Dome?" She mentioned his name! What a miracle. His heart was filled with so much joy. "Why will you not let me be?" Ignoring her plea, Dome suddenly distracted her with his finger pointed at a huge building; a shopping mall.

"Look!" he said, Mamle, curious to know what was new, turned to see the magnificent building before her.

"What's this?" she asked. "It's so huuuuuge!"

"Yes. It's filled with so many things we can goggle at," he said. "Let's go inside." Without much hesitation, Mamle held his hand.

"Let's go!" skipping joyfully. Why has Mamle become so childish? Does it numb her pain? I had better ask Doctor Fordjuor the next time we meet. Dome led her as they manoeuvred their way through the heavy crowd. Suddenly, Mamle stopped before one of the glass showrooms.

"There!" she shrieked, pointing at a phone. "I want that one!" Dome held her hand and slowly forced it down. Knowing what he was trying to do, she brought her hand back up and pointed at the window once again, making a great scene. Shoppers ogled at her. Others took pictures of her. She was indeed a celebrity acting weird. Dome was confused. This was unexpected. Mamle cried and wailed and sulked so much that the manager came to her rescue.

"What does she say she want?" he asked apologetically as if he was to blame for her misbehaviour.

"I'm sorry sir!" said Dome. "I didn't mean to cause a scene."

"Don't worry. We got your back. Just let her in." Dome held her hand yet it was clear she did not want to be controlled any longer.

"Let go of me! I don't know you anymore!"

"Just don't be alarmed. We will handle this situation," said the manager, directing Mamle with his eyes to his office.

"Madam, please, I have nicer ones in my office. If you could please step inside, I would gladly let you choose one."

"Okay!" Pushing Dome aside, she edged her way into his office. The two men shrugged simultaneously.

"We have several phones to suit your needs," he said, explaining.

"Excuse me, sir," clearing his throat before the manager could say anything else. "We don't have that kind of money. You understand?"

"Yes, I do. Everything is on the house," he said. "I just received a call from the psychiatric hospital explaining her condition so we have you covered. Have my business card. You can come to me anytime you want to." Mamle was at it again. It seemed she had the flair for attracting very important personalities. Amihere got wind of the situation and contemplated what he could do to save the situation. His actions could be misinterpreted therefore, it would be prudent to be discreet about his actions. A visit to Mamle would not be so bad after all yet, Dome and she had to get acquainted once more.

Two days later, two men came to see Doctor Fordjuor.

"We are pleased to announce our desire to adopt one of the wards in your hospital. We also have plans to refurbish the place and build new villages and cities for them." Said the man in a plain cream suit, looking very excited to be of much help. The other man spoke up briefly.

"We, as an organization, would like to set up a shopping mall here for the city this other company is about to build." Doctor Fordjuor rose in respect for their kind gesture.

"We are grateful," he said "When are we expecting you?"

"We'll start right away," he said.

"I can't believe my ears!" said Dome. "What did we do to deserve this? Mamle gets to live here. I do too. We'll be family!"

"Okay. Don't get too excited. It's going to take several years of waiting," said Doctor Fordjuor.

"I'm willing to wait for anything!" raising his hands in exhilaration. "We're blessed to be reliving our lives once again. Mamle must be a lucky woman!"

"You are lucky too," he assured him.

Unfortunately, Mamle was not excited about the news as he was. Mood swings ruined all the fun they had every day. That, however, did not change Dome's belief that just as he got better, she also would.
