Chapter 109 - Sophia

Boston, Massachusetts, Sophia's residence.

Inside an extremely decorated parlour, Sophia was seated on a large cushion wearing a flowery top and a short skirt. She had just finished her research regarding brain neurology, which she saved on her pc, before deciding to call it a day.

Ever since she was little, she has always been fascinated with the functions of the human brain. Most of the time, she would look up facts about the human brain and add them to her current sea of knowledge. She even printed them and plastered them on the walls in her room.

"Mom, mom, look at this! Do you know that the brain can store up to ten trillion bytes of data, which is more than enough to contain all of Wikipedia and the books all over the world?" That's amazing!" She would always gush to her mom. However, her mom would always smile at her and shuffle her hair, calling her a smart girl, before turning back to her tablet scrolling away.

Although she knew her parents were not too enthusiastic with her ideas, she could not help herself to always meet them anytime she finds something exciting. Her mom always calls her "Natures child", because Sophia always appeared carefree and lively.

But that was a long time ago. She was no longer the little girl she once loved. Everything changed forever when she met her father for the first time in her life. Her mom always tells her that her dad always travels a lot, and so he did not have much time for her family, but she would be quick to assure her that he still loved her.

Sophia actually believed that, but that was until she saw him for the first time when he flew back to Boston. She couldn't admit it, but he was very handsome. He resembled her a lot, like a lot. The blue eyes, the eyebrow outline, the skin colour—everything was similar to hers, except the masculinity.

At first, Sophia was very happy to see her father for the first time in seven years. She ran to hug him, telling him how much she missed him. While she was jovial, she realized he didn't hug back. Instead, he casually removed her grasp over his belly and indirectly shoved her.

Sophia thought it was weird, but she shrugged it off, assuming it was because he was tired from the flight journey. However, similar patterns of hostility were occurring towards her.

Sometimes, she would meet him when he was typing away on his computer doing work and show him drawings of him and her together. Although she admitted that she was not the artist type, her mum would still compliment her efforts. She would always gush how her painting would be hung in a famous gallery, causing her to giggle intermittently.

Sophia loved her dad, not because she resembled her though, but because her mum had always told her stories of him. She would always tell her how kind, loving and caring her dad was, and these stories would fill her with awe. The desire to meet her dad would further become intense.

However, the person that was seated on this sofa was a complete stranger to her. She was nothing like the person her mum told stories of. In fact, he was the opposite of what her mom said.

"Dad, this is the painting of you and me. I used my favourite crayons to paint this. Look at it", she had said, handing the canvas to her dad's face. Her dad took a very quick glance, and made a sound of affirmation, not even bother complement the work that took her five hours to complete.

This action nullified her previous happy mood. Throughout the rest of the day, she became moody and sad. However, she didn't throw away the paper. Instead, she carefully folded the paper and put it at the back of her baby frame picture hoping that one day, her dad would appreciate it.

Sophia's mom walked into the parlour and ended the call the moment she saw Sophia. "Honey, you're up early", she said with a smile, infecting Sophia. She stood up and hugged her mom.

"Mom, where are you going again? You just arrived yesterday", Sophia said with sadness. Although she knew her mom travels a lot, she was still troubled anytime her parents was not around for her.

Although her dad arrived with her, he didn't even bother to look at her once. She had gotten used to it, but it still hurt seeing him behave like that.

"Yeah, I'm going to London for a business deal with your father, and I'll be back by next week. Don't worry, Beatrice is coming to take care of the house alright?"

On hearing those words, Sophia face dropped. She sat on the sofa and picked up her pc. "Alright bye mum", she said flatly. Her mom walked to Sophia and wrapped her arms over Sophia's shoulder.

"Are you mad at me honey? Look it's not that I don't want to stay, but this deal is very important to us, to you alright, please don't be angry. Tell you what, I will buy you tons of stuff by the time I come back", her mom consoled. Sophia did not want her to be sad, so she nodded slightly.

Her mum smiled, then tickled Sophia to make her laugh. Just then her father walked in holding his tablet in his hand and a briefcase on the other. "We are going to be late Lois, we have to go", he said with a flat tone.

"Come on, honey, are you not going to say goodbye to Sophia", Sophia's mom asked. Her father's eyes met hers, but he quickly removed them and muttered a sentence, "We aren't going too far", before exiting the mansion.

"She's going to be here in less than fifteen minutes, so be good", her mom said quickly before her voice trailed off, leaving Sophia alone in the entire house, for the hundredth time.
