Chapter 44 - Whatever Happened To AI?

Amy had finished her story and grabbed the glass of water she requested from Martha. The stunned Martha could not stand anymore, and she sat down without removing her eyes from Amy.

"But why? If James was the one that took the chip, why would they be after my family?" Martha asked almost enraged. Amy sighed and dropped the tumbler.

"Your family are innocent, but the people that are after you do not want to leave any loose ends. The fact that they are after James would guarantee that you would be aware, which would put them at great risk."

Amy took another sip of water, dropped the glass cup on the table, before continuing "These wicked sets of people followed you to Hawaii to spy and look for ways to take James without you knowing. The job was supposed to be done without incident, that was until they did not see James in his room, it was then they realized something was wrong.

"How it happened, they did not know, but what they knew was that the chip was activated somehow, and it was functioning somewhere inside James."

Martha was beyond bewildered. She felt exhausted. John placed the stick he was holding on the corridor. He then began to think deeply and sat down on a little chair. He opened his mouth to say something, closed his mouth back.

Martha wore a shocked look throughout the time Amy was talking and only gritted her teeth after she was done. "Wait, does that aeroplane incident have anything to do with James?" she asked incuriously.

"What aeroplane incident?" Amy asked confused. "The aeroplane incident that happened on our way to Hawaii, can you please explain that, because I'm freaking out!" Martha was getting apprehensive, but John came over and wrapped his hands over her, soothing her nerves.

"I don't know of any aeroplane incident Mrs Hart, but what I do know is that you people should be wary from now on. These people have all the resources to get what they want, and they would not hesitate to kill if they have no choice."

Martha became angry and stood up from the sofa chair "Oh that's right. We should be on the run from now on, isn't it? I mean what would prevent me from calling the cops and reporting this incident? What would prevent me, Ms Amy?!" Martha spoke loudly, startling Toby, who started crying. Martha scooped him up the floor and shushed him gently.

"Because they are working WITH the cops. Remember when I told you they have all the resources they could throw on you, this is what I mean. Why do you think that little car pursuing drama did not attract any law enforcement?" Martha wanted to speak up, but Amy completed her statement "Because they saw it and decided not to do anything".

John glanced at Martha, who sat down again. Martha was clearly terrified, not because they were trying to murder her beloved family, but because they were left alone in dealing with this matter.

"What the hell have I landed into?" Martha muttered silently as she rested her face in her palms and shook her head. Esther came forward and side hugged her mom, then facing Amy, she said "Does it mean I can't go to school? I have to go to school!" she protested.

"No one is saying you can't continue with your lifestyle, what I'm saying was that you need to be wary of your surroundings from now on, that is until I take off the chip implanted on James" Amy replied, lifting the glass cup to her mouth nonchalantly.

John then became angry "You work for them, right?" he demanded. "Correction, I worked for them. I could not keep up with the unhealthy nature of the institution, so I quit" Amy shrugged.

"And can you tell me why you decided to quit your luxury job to running around and trying to save my family because if you ask me? It sounds very ridiculous" James glared at her. "Is this another scheme to steal whatever was inside James now huh?" Martha added, supporting John.

"You guys are clueless. Why do you think I got fired? Do you think I give a damn about your family? If I had the power to destroy humanity, I would have done it a long time ago. The only person deemed innocent by me is James because our unfair circumstances are similar" Amy spoke albeit loudly with gritted teeth, then she resets her demeanour and put on a smiley face.

Martha wanted to react, but James held her shoulder and urged her to swallow her words. "I don't understand what you just said now, but what do you mean by "our unfair circumstances are similar?" James asked curiously.

Amy lowered her eyes and stared at the table sadly. "They killed my boyfriend, the only person that meant the world to me. All my family died away years ago, leaving me alone in this cruel world, and the only person that kept me together was Matt, that was until some bastard in my company decided to rip me of that joy."

"I swear that if all this is over, I would singlehandedly tear down the company and avenge my boyfriend's death, even if that cost me my life" Amy's fist clenched as her eyes glistened with murderous rage.

John looked at her with interest. He sighed and rubbed his forehead with stress. "I'm really sorry for your boyfriend's death, but my own family is still alive, and if these—people harm my family, I would be devastated. For you to have come here, it means you have a solution to my family's security, right?"

"Mr Hart, with what I said earlier and I'll say it again, these people would not harm your family in the open. Just continue with your everyday life, only that you do not find yourself alone without anyone's around. I know this because I've worked with these monsters for a long time." Amy said and smiled.

James was listening to the conversations inside his room, thanks to his overly sensitive ears. So finally, they knew. James had wanted to personally tell them, but he did not know how to say it. James was a bit scared that Martha and John would dislike him because of this new information.

AI was still not responding, which confused him the more. Sure, he had all his memories back, but whatever happened to AI? Was the chip still in his brain?

James could sense a wave of depression.
