When the Harts arrived at their home, the trio alighted the car and playfully ran to the front door. Martha turned off the engine of her jeep and alighted. James looked up at the new home he was going to spend his whole life in. James was awed.
The house was fancy. It was a semi duplex building with a massive door glass on the left side of the front door. The garden at the left and right side of the house beautifully complimented the colour of the building, a light brown in the upper building and a darker brown on the lower building. It was just magnificent.
The beautiful garden's scent made James relax a little as he walked into the house. Martha then dropped the groceries she bought earlier in the big kitchen and approached James "James, welcome to your home. I hope you will like it here. Esther would show you to your room. I'll be right behind you to set it up, okay?"
Martha then bent to James height with a sympathetic look in her eyes "I wish I could properly console you and tell you it's okay, but still cannot remember. So, we'll take care of you till you recover okay?" she tenderly spoke.
James then nodded and said, "Don't worry aunt Martha, if I remember anything, I'll make sure I inform you", James calmly said, innocently staring at the eyes of Martha. Martha then smiled weakly and signalled Esther to show him his room. Esther then went ahead and walked James upstairs.
James and Martha walked in silence, until Esther decided to speak "James, I know all these might seem too much for you, but don't endure them all alone. I'll always be available if you need anything at all, okay? You need to rest and eat lunch first, then I show you around the house".
James nodded as he smiled at his cousin "Thank you, Esther. I might not remember you, but I have a feeling we can be best friends" James smiled genuinely for the first time.
"I think I might need your help with something. Can you assist me in telling me who my parents were? At least it would help me remember them a little" James added.
"I wish I could James, the doctor said that we should not try and invoke your memory for any reason. I'm sorry, but I cannot do that. Please, ask me anything else, and I would help you." Esther gently protested. James became slightly disappointed. Esther felt bad about it, so she brought out a book from her backpack, tore a piece of paper, and wrote something.
She then handed the paper over to James. "These are the names of your parent. Try and memorize them. Don't worry, I'll take it slow so you don't get overwhelmed. Do you understand? I'm doing this for your good" she said looking at James in the eye. 'Alright, thank you very much" James innocently replied.
James dropped his belongings on the king-sized bed before he lay down. He laid flat, with the clothes he wore since he was in the hospital, and tried to take a short nap, but sleep wasn't coming. Feeling frustrated, he then thought of something to do.
James panned across his new room. "This room is too large for one person. What do I want to use all these spaces for?" James wondered.
His room had a separate toilet and a bathroom, and looking at the window, he could see other houses in the neighbourhood. He then got off the bed and to the large window. 'I'll admit, the view is beautiful, and the air smelled good too' he thought as he took a deep breath.
[Hi James]
James was shocked, he looked around for the source of the voice before realizing something. "You scared me AI! I'm sorry I almost forgot about you." James said. [Don't worry, I get it, but you are right, the house is huge] the AI seemed surprised.
"Do you have any emotions? You act like you are genuinely surprised about something." James queried. James could admit he did not believe computers could feel emotions.
Though humans can make them very intelligent, they are not capable of experiencing emotions. That's what separates humans from machines and animals.
[I am directly connected to you, so of course, I can feel what you feel. If you are angry, I am angry. If you are happy, I am happy. But I can also alter your emotions for my benefit. You might be angry, but I can be happy.] the AI said.
"Hmm, can I set constraints as to which part of my brain you can access and which part you could not? For example, I am not comfortable with you having access to my memories, or controlling my body" James asked, starting to feel uncomfortable with a computer invading his mind.
[Don't worry. I am not capable of altering your memories at all, yet, you can be assured of that. I also cannot alter the automatic processes of the body like your heartbeat, breathing, or metabolism. I am an operating system, not a person, so I was built to serve my host] the AI replied, reassuring James.
James was then able to calm down. So, he said, "Right, so how many per cent of my memory were you able to recover so far?"
[12%].
James sighed. It would take a long time to finish. [But I can do something else for you] the AI replied. Then the info stats popped on James' eyes as a 3D diagram of a large building materialized in his eyes. It was the home of Martha. James was bewildered. "Wow! You can do this too? But how?" James asked astounded.
James could see a red dot in a room, indicating his current position. He could also see the rest of the bedrooms and sitting room, with the position of the residents of the building, with their names following the dots.
[I am connected to all the satellites above the earth's orbit. I am also connected to the internet, so I can access anything I want for you, anything at all. I can also download skills, languages, and knowledge and compile them for your benefit James] the AI explained.
James could not believe he had a supercomputer in his brain. He was surprised that such an invention existed in this technological era. "What are you?" James wondered.
[I told you I am an OS. I was installed to your brain by your dad. My build code is AC2257B. It was only two chips that existed in the world. The second one is I]. The AI said. [I may not be sure, but I think the first chip might be with your dad.] The AI added.
