Chapter 37 - 37. Harmful Friends

"Yo, yo, need any help?" Two heads poked out from the balcony above, looking down at Fu Fengcheng sitting on the ground, with great enthusiasm. He raised his head and glanced at those above who were enjoying his misfortune, and his expression turned even darker. "No, thanks."

"Don't need it?" Xiao Yiran leaned on the balcony, smiling as he asked.

Fu Fengcheng squinted his eyes slightly, and with a slight movement of his sleeve, a pocket-sized gun slid into his palm.

Pointing it towards the people on the balcony, his eyes were filled with killing intent.

Xiao Yiran immediately retracted his head, and Wei Zhangxiu was much more elegant. "He is a prince after all. If you killed him, the charges would be severe."

They quickly disappeared from the balcony, and when they appeared again behind the flowerbed a while later, Fu Fengcheng had already returned to his wheelchair.

Xu Shaoming stood on the side, bowing his head respectfully, not daring to look at Fu Fengcheng's cold expression.

Xiao Yiran was holding a glass of wine and couldn't help but sigh. "I have to say, you're quite lucky. You lost sesame seeds but picked up a watermelon. This sister-in-law is much more interesting than the one from the Zheng family."

Wei Changxiu nodded in agreement. "The prerequisite is that he doesn't get beaten to death by Miss Leng with a mouth like that."

Xiao Yiran couldn't help but burst into laughter. "I mean, Ol' Fu, what are you thinking? Even if you've never pursued girls before, you can't be this pathetic, right? You should consult me more in this matter. Let me tell you… no matter how old a girl is, firstly, you can't say that, secondly, you can't call her ugly, and thirdly, you can't say she lacks femininity. If you tell a girl she lacks femininity, then she will tell you a man… uh…"

Seeing the cold muzzle of the gun in front of him, Xiao Yiran swallowed hard and raised his hands in surrender.

Wei Zhangxiu couldn't be bothered to deal with Xiao Yiran's crazy antics and looked at Fu Fengcheng. "Are you planning to marry Miss Leng just like that?"

Fu Fengcheng replied indifferently, "What's wrong? Given my current condition, my old man arranging a marriage with the Leng family is already his best plan for me."

Wei Zhangxiu sighed softly and frowned as he asked, "Is it true that there's no cure? I've invited a few renowned doctors from abroad, but it might take some time."

Fu Fengcheng didn't seem concerned. "It was diagnosed by Zhang Zixu and Donald themselves."

Wei Zhangxiu's frown deepened, and so did Xiao Yiran's. "There were some imperial physicians in the palace who went missing in recent years, including a few orthopedic experts, living among the commoners over the years. I'll have someone send you a list later, and you can send people to look for them."

All three of them knew that the chances were slim. When Fu Fengcheng was first injured, the Fu family consulted every available doctor, including all the imperial physicians who had left the palace.

The palace had even sent imperial physicians who were still serving to Yong City. Unfortunately, no one could save his leg.

Fu Fengcheng remained indifferent and said, "We'll see."

They both understood that he didn't want to discuss this topic further so they tacitly changed the subject. "What does your Fourth Brother want?"

"You can't tell?"

Wei Zhangxiu replied, "It's because I can figure it out, that's why I find it strange. It's natural for him to want to step up when you're injured, but this kind of… method, did he come up with it himself?" Trying to steal his own older brother's fiancée – that was a move he couldn't comprehend.

Moreover, he was offending the Leng family as well. Did Fu Fengcheng think the Leng family, despite their recent decline, was something he could just trample on?

The old man of the Leng family had lived for decades and had more life experience than Fu Yucheng had grains of rice in his lifetime. How can he be underestimated?

Over the past few days, Fu Yucheng had become a laughingstock throughout the Six Southern Provinces. He wouldn't believe it if it was not because of that old man from the Leng family behind all this.

Not to mention… offending Fu Fengcheng.

Fu Fengcheng was only injured, not dead. Fu Yucheng was eager to step up, but if he tried to step on his brother to serve his goal, he shouldn't be afraid of falling and shattering into pieces.

Xiao Yiran clicked his tongue and said, "Among the daughters of Warlord Fu's few trusted subordinates, either their ages don't match, or they're already married. If we're talking… about who's most suitable to become the future Madam Fu in the Six Southern Provinces, it seems that only the young lady from the Zheng family fit the bill. After all, the Zheng family controls the entire financial purse of the Six Southern Provinces."

Just looking at it, Fu Yucheng was inferior to his father. Let's not talk about how heroic and valiant Warlord Fu was in his youth. Just considering the current Madam Fu family's background, they were not from a prestigious family. How capable could he be to rely on his wife's family to rise to the top?

Wei Changxiu disagreed, saying, "Who holds the purse in the end is still at the discretion of Warlord Fu. Today it may be the Zheng family, but tomorrow it could be the Wang family."

"I doubt Fu Yucheng sees it that way," Xiao Yiran said.

Wei Changxiu snorted and looked at Fu Fengcheng. "What are you going to do? Are you going to let him do whatever he wants?"

Fu Fengcheng looked up and gave him a cold glance.

"Fine, consider me a busybody too," Wei Changxiu chuckled. "You do as you see fit, I'm leaving Yong City in two days. I'll be back when you're getting married at the end of May."

Xiao Yiran added, "Me too. I need to go back to the capital for a while."

"I won't send you off."

"Oh, by the way, tell Madam Fu not to bother anymore. I'll release the Feng family members tomorrow." These days, she had been trying hard to persuade him to release the Feng family, but without Warlord Fu's support, even the Warlord's wife couldn't accomplish much.

At least Wei Changxiu remained untouched by it all.

"You're being surprisingly easygoing," Xiao Yiran remarked, somewhat surprised.

Wei Changxiu looked at him with a smile yet not a smile but didn't answer. Xiao Yiran suddenly felt a chill on his head and wisely decided to keep his mouth shut.

The Third Prince had always been at the bottom of the social hierarchy.

The ball continued until eleven in the evening, and once again, it was Xu Shaoming who drove the four of them back to the Leng residence. Sitting in the car on their way back, Leng Sa suddenly realized that she hadn't seen Leng Mingshu for the entire evening.

Didn't Third Auntie mention that Leng Mingshu was supposed to accompany Xiao Haoran to the Fu residence?

Second Master Leng and Second Madam were attending such a social event for the first time. They were too preoccupied with handling individuals trying to establish connections or gather information, and they were also keeping an eye on Leng Sa and Leng Feng. They couldn't even spare the attention to check on Leng Mingshu, and their faces reflected their bewilderment.

Leng Feng, however, spoke up, "I saw the Fourth Sister. She was with Zheng Xian from the Zheng family and was talking to Zheng Ying."

"Hmm?" Zheng Ying was Xiao Haoran's white moonlight, yet he had Leng Mingshu go to meet her and Zheng Xian?

"That Xiao Haoran seems to know someone from the Zheng family. Fourth Sister has been with Zheng Xian all night," Leng Feng added. Zheng Xian had even spoken ill of her sister, and while Leng Mingshu hadn't joined in, she hadn't refuted her either.

Second Madam Fu wasn't concerned about Leng Mingshu, nor did she care about Xu Shaoming who was driving in front. She pulled Leng Sa aside and asked in a hushed voice, "Yue'er, is the wedding date finalized? Why do I… feel a little flustered?"

Leng Sa reassured her, "In any case, the wedding plans are all set. We'll still have to get married whether it's sooner or later, don't we?"

Xu Shaoming's hand on the steering wheel trembled slightly. Wasn't Miss Leng being too casual about it?

Second Madam gave her daughter a disgruntled look. "Can it be that simple?"

"Alright, Mother," Leng Sa leaned against Second Madam's shoulder. "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. Consider the fact that, as the eldest sister-in-law, I am marrying later than the younger sister-in-law. Is that appropriate?"

Second Madam sighed and rubbed her forehead. "Well, I understand that this matter is not up to us to decide. I'd better focus on your dowry then."

Leng Sa nuzzled her head against her mother's shoulder. "Thank you, Mother."

Second Madam Fu raised her hand and patted her daughter's head, feeling a pang of sadness. "What hard work is that for your mother? As long as you're well, that's all that matters."

"We'll all be fine."

"Yes, Sister is right!"

  1. letting go of the small thing, and gaining a better thing
  2. a cherished memory of first love
