Zera could hear her footsteps echoing behind her. But other than that, the silence surrounding her made her skin crawl.
An abandoned coffee cup lay untouched by the table at the front desk. A smashed computer would spark from time to time atop the counter where the zigzagged plastic cover held a few gathered dust.
Papers lay scattered on the cracked aluminum floor; golden letters bearing the name of what looked like a hotel lay before Zera.
She was on her fifth building, and she and Beatrix didn't find anything so far. They would meet outside briefly before moving on and securing another building.
It was like exchanging reports with another and then moving along to cover more ground.
"Oh, boy," Zera muttered. There would be more rooms in this particular place compared to the other buildings.
She and Beatrix also helped each other out. They would give a five-minute countdown before following the other inside their assigned building.
