Chapter 16 - Memories (5)

" It's literally a flying train... it's something that we couldn't even imagine in our childhood but now we have the opportunity to see it happen in a few months... hahahahahah.", an old man with graying hair said with a huge grin on his face.

The old man was sitting in a sofa drinking alcohol from a glass, opposite to him the man sat while holding a cup of what appeared to be orange juice in his hands.

The man nods along to whatever the old man said, seeing this a frown appears on the old man's wrinkled face and he said,

" Today's a day of celebration, Jacob... what are you doing drinking goddamn orange juice like a fucking toddler, drink some good stuff today at least."

The man laughs at his superior's words and said,

" I don't drink, sir."

The old man scoffs at the man's reply and gulp down his drink, after finishing the drink he said,

" Che, you're no fun..... anyways do you remember everything that I told you ?"

" I do, sir.", said the man.

" Well I'll explain once again, just to make sure you fully understand it. We're introducing a whole new system, it's going to be three tracks at every station and they're going to be interchangeable. The third track will be raised up from which the super engine will be activated allowing the train to... fly. Right now, the the process of building it almost complete , in about say... two months time all the constructions will be completed. So-"

The old man is interrupted by a little girl who enters the room,

" Papa !", the girl seemed about five or six years old.

She runs over to the man and jumps onto his lap to give him a kiss on the cheek.

" Daisy...I'm busy now.", the man scolded the girl but the slight smile on his face gave away that he actually welcomed her presence.

" Ah.. this must be your famous daughter, I hear you bring her to the station often. I must say the rumors don't do her any justice, she's much more cuter up close...hahahah", the old man said while pinching the Daisy's cheeks.

The man frowns at his superior's action but doesn't say anything.

It's been 3 years since Katrina's death.

During this past three years the man has kept his promise of not hurting his only daughter.

He's provided her with everything she needs and loved her more than anything.

Even though in the beginning it was tough as she reminded him so much of Katrina, but after some time the man couldn't help but care about his daughter.

She was the product of the man's and Katrina's love. He felt ashamed of the fact that some part of him was blaming a helpless baby for his wife's death.

This realisation didn't make it any easier to forget Katrina and move on but he did it anyway.. he had a feeling that staying stuck in the past wouldn't be good for him or his little Daisy.

" Papa ?", Daisy asks confused.

The man snaps out of his trance and comes back to reality. The woman at the register and his daughter were looking at him with concern in their eyes.

' I should go see a doctor or something.', the man thinks while paying the lady.

Recently he's been having moments like this too often.

The man, along with his daughter comes out of the supermarket.

" Are you ok, papa?", Daisy asked.

The man smiles at his daughter and said,

" As long as you're happy... I'll be fine.", the man said confusing the little girl.

The man was sitting in the control room, going through some files. Today, he had to bring in his daughter to work cause his sitter had called in sick. The man had left his daughter with one of the people working under him.

The man wanted to be with his daughter but the work he had couldn't wait any longer.

Another man opens the door to the control room and enters. As soon as the man notices the other man, panic seizes his heart.

" John... where's my daughter ?"

It was the man who had agreed to look after his daughter.

Hearing his question, John becomes confused and said,

" She said that she was coming to yo-", but John gets cut of by another employee who shouts,

" Chief.. your daughter !!!", as soon as the man hears his daughter's name being mentioned, he rushes towards the employee and pushes him aside.

In the screen before him, he could see his daughter trying to take out her doll which had gotten stuck on the train track and inching closer to her every second was a train.

" WHY ISN'T SHE RUNNING AWAY ???!", one of the newer employee's shout in a panicked voice.

The person sitting next to the workers says in a quiet voice,

" The chief's daughter is... deaf."

The man looked strangely calm.

He was absolutely terrified but he knew that now wasn't the time or place. The man was glad that his daughter was standing after the part where the track was divided that meant that he could switch the tracks before it hit her. But from the other side, another train was coming as well so that couldn't be included in the options. The second track, the one which rose up into the sky was not completely constructed yet and more importantly the train couldn't fly yet since the super engine wasn't installed yet..

The workers who ran out now could save her...but that was highly unlikely. The distance they had to cover was too large and they didn't have time.

The man doesn't think for that long, for him the answer would never change even if the number of options increased.

The man rushes to the remote control section of the control room and pushes all the people who get in his way away.

He presses the button, that changed the direction direction of the train to the second track.

A few moments later, the surveillance camera in the train showed the video of men, women, the elderly and even childeren plummeting down to their deaths.

All the people working in the control room watched in horror as hundreds of people were crushed to death.

But the man....he doesn't look at them, his eyes were on the screen displaying his Daisy and a small smile broke out on his face seeing that she was not hurt.

The man was glad that she was fine because that's all he's ever wanted and he won't let anything get in the way of his daughter's safety.

Ever.
