Chapter 2 - Ch. II Death's first cold grip

Ten years ago, Hymine was walking down the sidewalk with his sister. It had gotten dark, so his sister picked him up to start jogging. Turn after turn, we finally reached home. his sister was still holding him when the curse tried to exterminate us. She was walking when a wave of magic must've hit her, making her drop Hymine. a man walked directly to him and snatched him before Hymine's sister could wake up.

tight ropes cut the circulation of blood in Hymine's hands while his blindfold concealed his vision. the van rushed through the streets, bouncing Hymine all around. Hymine remained quiet. "I've got to do what Sister Aneko told me to do. Use the senses that aren't covered to feel the surroundings," Hymine thought.

Hymine felt around the moving and bouncing van for anything he could use, but whoever was driving had emptied the van of all things. The van came up toward a large speed bump that the driver ignored, bouncing Hymine to the roof, and knocking him out cold.

When Hymine awoke, he saw himself tied next to two of his brothers, ten-year-old twins that were inseparable. both of them had a fearful expression when he looked at them. "Welcome! Today, we are making brothers. Siblings fight it out to the death! Place your bets now! first up are twins! together at birth! together at the end! which will end victoriously!" an announcer blared out of his speakers, as the twins were grabbed and dragged to different rooms.

Hymine stood up and walked to the windows to watch their fight. The window showed an arena like those of the past. Sand ground stands surrounding the arena, random objects in the arena, and a box for the ring leader. When the two doors on each side of the arena opened, both twins walked out with some armor and a weapon in hand.

The fight began quickly, with both of them lunging straight for the heart. Hymine was shocked? "Will they degrade so quickly?" he pondered, staring at the twins. The left twin threw his blade down and made the gesture to hug. The right twin walked up like he was going to accept, but he stabbed the left brother in the head.

"ELTHAN?" Hymine yelled, "How could you, Althan!" A guard marched in, grabbed Hymine by the arm, and pulled him away from the right twin gloating over the body. The six-year-old Hymine was fuming, "How could anyone kill their brother!"

"Welcome to the armory, please gear yourself up, and go to fight," the guard monotoned, gesturing to the assorted armors and weapons. Hymine searched the armors for one that fit his small stature and noticed multiple suits.

"Having this armor means they do this enough to young people like me to make this armor," the revolting thought brought bile to Hymine's mouth, as he gagged with wide eyes, "I have to win if I want to ever see Aneko ever again... if she's not already dead."

Hymine walked over to the armor that looked like it would fit the most and donned it. He glanced over to the weapons, "A sword is too long, a mace is too heavy, I can't shoot a bow, an ax is also too heavy, and a spear is still too long. I guess a dirk or long knife would do, "Hymine thought, walking to the shelves where the knives were held.

"One weapon per trip," the Guard warned tiredly, it was obvious that the guard hadn't slept yet, due to his bags in his eyes, his sleepy voice followed by a sporadic yawn, and his swaying motion.

Hymine dug through the selection of daggers, but none of the blades had any sharpness to them. He walked away to the short swords, walking past one by one until a glimmer of shining light from the rack caught his eye. he reached past the dull blades to wrap his fingers on a shiny crystal.

Crystals like these dropped from the waring creatures of off-world. Occasionally, the color scheme told of the power in the crystal, and the shape told what it powered. Hymine knew of crystals but had no idea of what they did except something magical, so he pocketed it, and walked back over to the daggers. After glancing back at the selection, Hymine choose an eight-inch long straight blade, made for stabbing.

Hymine took the crystal out and lifted the crystal to the light. Its color was an opaque milky white, the weakest type of crystal anyone could get from an off-world creature. the shape could only be described as a shard.

"I think this is how it's supposed to go," Hymine mumbled, as he pushed the dagger and the crystal together. The blade merged with the crystal, making the blade sharper and harder.

"walk through there," the guard gestured, pushing a button when Hymine was in. A shouting voice announced to the crowd who was fighting. "Shit!" the guard cursed, fumbling with his keys, "I forgot to minister the enhancer!"

The doors lifted open like the gate of a castle. across from Hymine, Althan glared at him with a hand behind his back. At the same time, they both charged at each other, glaring intently.

Before either of them got into the stabbing distance, Althan threw the thing opaque his body. It was a flash grenade. Hymine felt danger from the thrown object, but while he was turning his head, it exploded.

Ringing. Hymine's ears had nothing but it. all sounds had stopped except for a constant, evil ringing. with Hymine's ears out of the way, Hymine opens his eyes. The only color he can see is white. He couldn't see any shadows or shapes at all.

"I'm dead," the thought tried to form, but the ringing drowned it out entirely. Hymine's mind reached for any last memory to hold onto as he gets plunged through with his brother's dagger.

"Remember Hymine, everyone has a sixth sense, but no one ever uses it. It is your sense of placement of where you and others are. You must train that sense, so you can know where you are, where others are, and where to go if you ever lose your sight from the curse," Aneko informed.

Something... Clicked. As if his sixth sense was asleep before, it was now wide awake after drinking a four-hour energy drink. Hymine knew his brother was right about to stab him, so he swayed to the side, dodging the attack.

Hymine waited for another chance while his bother circled to attack from behind. Silently, Althan sprinted with his dagger at his side, ready to plunge into his brother's flesh, but Hymine was ready for him.

Once again Hymine swayed, but this time, he didn't waste his chance to plunge his dagger deep into his back. Althan felt a sharp pain from his back before everything went dark. His corpse collapsed behind Hymine, as the crowd went wild.

"BOom...boOM...BAng!" the doors to the arena seats were busted open, and the police stormed the stands, arresting watchers as they cleared a path. Chaos flooded the spectators, while they crawled over each other to escape.

Hymine had collapsed onto the sandy arena floor, while he cried. Tears flowed down Hymine's face like streams down onto the red-stained sand. He cried without reason. just letting everything wash away while a comforting pair of arms wrapped around him.

"Don't worry, I've got you," Aneko reassured into Hymine's ear, "Everything is going to be all right. I'm here now." Hymine went limp in Akeno's arms, as she carried him out of the arena back home.

"That must've been when I first used my Magic! that thread I formed that day will be my ticket to break this rune!" Hymine concurred. The thread feeling to the core got slightly stronger, elevating Hymine's confidence. He felt the thread and blocked out all other senses.

Time ticked by while Hymine remained in full concentration. He slowly built the idea of wrapping his hands around the thread and when he had a good grip, he pulled with all of his being.

"I will not let this curse guide Death to wrap his cold grip around my shoulders ever again!" Hymine shouted, pulling harder. The rune was stretching farther and farther away from his core, thinning out while the light of the rune got brighter and brighter.

The resistance on Hymine suddenly stopped, making him fall on his back, but the fading of the rune brought a smile to Hymine's face. He stood up, walked over to his core, and placed his hand on it. A rush of power stretched the thread of connection from a thread to a stream, then to a river.

"AAHahahaa! I did it!" Hymine whooped, doing a little dance, "Now, let's see this wild magic!"
