Chapter 3 - The Tremors

As the orphanage came into view Eadwulf felt another tremor shake his very core as if the Rent was even closer than before as if it were chasing the

As Chris, Billy and William reached the doors of the orphanage and stopped to catch their breath Billy continued wheezing for breath as he made his way to his room. As he stumbled through the hall another tremor struck causing him to slam into the wall and causing pictures to fall off the walls

Breathing heavily still he made his way to his room and saw the disappeared it was in "damn the tremors must have this place hard" he exclaimed, surprised by the extent of the damage. Her made his way towards the bed and got on his knees to reach the box hidden In cut out section of his mattress

"Damn it was not fun sleeping on this" he said as his eyes went over the small metal box "but it was worth it to keep it out of Pengriffs dirty mitts"

Pengrim Mortan was the headmaster of the orphanage and was laughably stereotypical concerning the role of an evil headmaster. He was a fat and angry man who had the nasty habit of stealing the valuable keepsakes of the children before pawning them off. Off course he didn't know that whenever he did so Eadwulf would steal from his wallet and use the money to buy back the keepsakes from the pawnshop owner.

Opening the small box to remove its contents, a small golden watch with the engravings of lightning and the initials V.F on the back. He had no idea who V.F was but he assumed that it was one of his parents.

Putting it in his pocket and looking around his room he now was able to take in the full level of destruction that had occurred. His clothes had spewed out of his cupboard onto the floor, his pictures and posters now also decorated the floor, the light flickered and there was a leak in the ceiling.

"How could three tremors do so much damage?" he thought aloud. As he said that another tremor happened shaking the entire house and causing him to fall over

"There shouldn't be this many quakes or damage to this extent unless…" he shot to his feet feeling terrified at the very thought as he ran down the hallway he ran into Chris "Chris I think…"

"That this is the epicenter of the Rent!" he said finishing for him the blood having also drained from his face "it would explain why Billy and William haven't found any body"

"We need to find them and get the hell out of here!" Eadwulf responded as he hurried out the door

Thankfully they found the twins just behind the main building "guys we need to get out of here!" but they didn't respond, they just stared at something in the sky looking pale and terrified as if they saw their own deaths

Looking up Eadwulf to saw something that terrified him, it was a Rent, it was literally tearing its way towards them from above going through the sky like a spiderweb of inky blue and black

"WE NEED TO GO NOW!!" Chris grabbed Billy and Eadwulf began dragging William, thankfully this pulled the two boys out of their shock, and they began as a group running towards the main gate of the Orphanage.

As they ran, he looked behind him and saw a inky darkness crawling towards them like a terrifying mist. He redoubled his efforts, but it wasn't enough as the Rent swallowed the boy's whole, everything went dark for Eadwulf, and he lost consciousness

****

It was cold

Eadwulf hadn't even opened his eyes yet, too afraid to accept his reality but he knew, he knew what had happened and he knew where he was

As he peaked his eyes open, he saw it was much darker than it had been as he was running from the Rent, he saw that the sky was different from the one he had once known. It had a black sky with what seemed like red tendrils snaking throughout as if he were looking at an old tarp that was wearing down and showing through the seems

As he sat up and looked around him, he saw that much of the surrounding area was the same or at least similar to what it had been before, he was still in the orphanage courtyard near the front gate but now instead of seeing a bustling city through the iron gates he saw something else

A forest

And that was the final nail in the coffin, there was no space for denial or argument, it was now an irrefutable fact and there was no way to change it.

He was Sucked into a Rent

Rents were the greatest danger to any person within Eshax, they appeared randomly and could come in any size from the ones that could take an entire city block when they opened to the smaller house sized Rifts as they were called

When a person was or thing entered a Rent they were transported to whatever world laid on the other side and spat out somewhere a few miles from the Rent itself due to the Rent being extremely unstable and being unable to keep physical material within it

"so, I guess I was chewed up and spat out huh? He muttered as he stood up and began inspecting the surrounding courtyard and as he spotted three familiar figures walking towards him he corrected himself and felt a little more hope towards his situation "so WE were spat out huh?
