Jack Price was on his favorite truss, slowly pacing up and down it.
Brendan wanted to take off his mask and wipe the blood from his ears but the hatred for Jack restrained him, telling him that if he blinked then he would miss every single second of his revenge upon him. The expression on Jack's face proved that he did not even have the least bit of remorse for what he had done.
'I'm surprised you came, hero,' said Jack with not so much as a smile or gesture but his cold dark eyes staring down at Brendan from above. 'I thought you'd be mourning the death of your beloved teacher right now.'
Looking at Jack now, Brendan felt nothing but an anger that boiled over to the surface. Several times he thought of rushing up the trusses and strangling the life out of his skeleton frame, and dangling the remains over a bridge when he was done. He continued to fantasize on the thousand ways he could kill Jack, but he managed to bring down his rage, to have it subside to a level he could turn his gaze down and laugh mockingly.
'Is there something funny about what I've just said?' Jack asked him.
'No…What is funny is the damage I'm about to inflict upon your body.'
Jack swooped from the truss and landed in front of him. 'Don't you learn? I'm untouchable,' he chuckled wickedly.
He continued laughing, 'I've finally had my vision, Jack, and I've finally accepted my gene.'
'Don't be foolish, boy. You could never land a blow on me!'
'I know about your ancestor's history, of how he trembled when he discovered that he couldn't disembowel the Canine at its Rabies stage. I also know that a Versatile can smack you wild without getting you to shiver first.'
'How do you know about that?' Jack's expression turned into unexpected surprise.
'My Versatile gene has proven its loyalty to me. It has revealed to me a tremendous type of power.'
'You're bluffing…You haven't had your vision yet. You think I would fall for such a childish trick?'
'Oh, it's not childish, Jack. My blood is tingling with such indescribable power.' He could see Jack's body slowly become humanlike from its ghostly figure. He knew fear had prevailed over him. 'Now, Jack..,' he snapped the bones in his knuckles in an intimidating fashion, '…let's finish where we left off.'
Brendan grabbed him by his throat and threw him up into the trusses, breaking most of them on impact before falling to the ground face first. He kicked him hard sending him across the warehouse and smashing into the wall, leaving huge cracks.
He lay on the ground motionless for a while but then he slowly got up. He wiped the dirt from the corner of his mouth, 'I may have lost my teleportation powers because of your claim but the rest still remain.'
Teleportation powers? Brendan thought; fear eradicated the Phantom's teleportation ability?
Without warning, Jack created a human miniature tornado using his body and he spiraled towards Brendan, but Brendan did not attempt to jump out of the way but threw a heavy punch towards him which landed on his head, sending him crashing through the left wall and outside the warehouse and crashing into a tree, scattering fragments of bark in different directions.
Brendan walked through the space in the wall and walked towards him.
Jack was struggling to get up. His eyes looked very weary. When he finally managed to stand up, his body was shaking in pain. He opened his mouth to speak but dust muffled his speech, spilling onto the soil. 'I am a Demon Phantom,' he murmured, 'I am the one to put an end to the curse my ancestor, Dread Shadow brought upon my race and I am not to be humiliated by a mere infant! Do we not also possess powers similar to yours, you bastard!'
Brendan now looked at him in pity. He said, 'You're right. Your powers can match ours in type but not in number. Ours outnumber yours. You only possess up to at least four types of super powers but a Versatile can possess much, much more.' He grabbed him by the throat again. Blood mixed with dirt spurt from his mouth. Brendan now felt overwhelmed with compassion but he knew that if he were to let Jack Price go, then he would help the Finch in slaughtering the human race just as they had planned. He was glad though that his lie had worked and he now had Jack Price right where and how he wanted him; at his mercy and tangible. He smashed him into the ground and stomped on his head with his right foot, burying it deep into the ground.
Jack let out a wail of pain which made Brendan's heart beat faster in guilt. He wanted to stop but he had to avenge Ernest Sparrow's death. He had to bring the Finch's plan to a stop.
Jack's wails grew louder and louder.
Using his left foot, he kicked Jack up a few feet into the air and with his right foot summoned all his strength and kicked him hard in the ribs which sent him crashing into a huge boulder about half a kilometer away. The boulder only developed huge cracks on this impact. Using his enhanced speed, he rushed to him and found his arms lodged in the cracks of the boulder. Almost his entire body was now covered in dust and bruises. Brendan, convinced he was dead, began to walk away. Jack let out a faint groan.
Brendan snatched him by his throat from the boulder and looked him in the eye; the other was now tight shut from injury. 'Why don't you just die, Jack?'
