'But don't you think it doesn't make sense?' Brendan attempted to convince them. 'The guy saves us then he kills someone? It's like saving someone to kill them.'
'Well, one thing does make sense…' Simon said, 'the guy is on d…rugs!'
Samantha, unnoticed, sat beside Brendan and Simon jerked violently upon noticing her presence. 'Boys..!' he started, '…we have a witch among us!'
She gave a sideways glance at Brendan as if to say, "Did you talk to him?"
He shrugged in response.
'What's this body language I see?' Simon asked them both.
'What body language?' he innocently objected.
Simon gave them both a threatening sigh then got up and pulled Owen with him. They went and sat far away from them.
'I thought you spoke to him?' she asked him, a look of disappointment on her face.
'Sam, this is Simon we're talking about. The guy's got a hard head.'
'But he's your friend; it wouldn't be hard to convince him.'
'I said I would try but not so soon, he needs time to calm down. If I rush this or surprise him he might just do something dangerous, besides, he's still trying to get over the thought of you and me at the Dance together.'
'He knows?!' She raised her eyebrows in alarm.
'Of course he does. I didn't know it till now but Owen's a gossiper.'
They both became silent, looking in opposite directions.
'About yesterday..,' he broke the silence, '…what could have or almost happened…I got too carried away, I'm sorry.'
'You're apologizing? If there's anyone who should be sorry here it's me. I pushed it to happen.'
'Let's just put it all behind us and forget it ever happened.'
She nodded in agreement.
The awkward silence returned except for Brendan tapping the tips of his fingers on the table.
'Please speak to him before it's too late,' she broke the silence this time. 'I just can't live with this burden of guilt any longer.'
'I will, I promise,' he assured her. Just then, the bell rang for classes to resume.
As Brendan sat on his couch at home after school, he held the results of his History pop quiz in his hand. 'An F for "Forget College",' he mumbled to himself. The builders were busy building his garage outside. He could hear Mr. Drewmorphin's deep in-command voice ordering the builders around and also the sound of hammers clanging on metal and hacksaws chewing away at it. His lunch lay on the coffee table in front of him, half eaten. He took the remote control and flipped to a news channel;
'And in main news, strange and bizarre events have been occurring in the city of Bradwield. The town which strictly banned witchcraft, taking this crime to be as serious as rape and murder, hasn't had any reports of these offences till recently. There are speculations of the existence of creatures or beings called "Supremes" which are believed to be a race superior to human beings. These Supremes are believed to possess the strangest of abilities and pose a great threat to the society. After having witnessed a violent brawl between two of these Supremes; Anvil and Anonymous, Bradwield's most wanted criminal, Delilah Stoltz was apprehended by the police but she escaped on the same day. A citizen was rescued by Anonymous, Miss Latoya Putin, but she is not available to share her story. A few weeks ago, one of these creatures burnt the main bank of the city; the Flicker, who happens to be the culprit, is also being searched for by the police. This morning, the Anonymous murdered a schoolteacher in one of some abandoned warehouses near the desert. The victim, Ernest Sparrow, was taken to the hospital for an autopsy review but no wounds or bruises were found on his body and doctors believe that the Anonymous used magic to commit this brutal homicide. One of these teachers who were kidnapped during a function of the school, Jack Price, is still missing.
When police opened fire on the Anonymous, he vanished into thin air. Also this morning in Bradwield, the Flicker and another of these Supremes who calls himself "Black Ice", froze and burnt seven houses on the outskirts of the city. When asked to comment on these bizarre events, Mayor Peter Loop said, "If these freaks want to start a war, then I will be happy to cooperate by fighting back with double the fury." Angus Stu, also known as Anvil, is being buried this weekend.
This is Cindy Copperfield reporting for Bradwield Future News.'
Brendan felt an ache in the pit of his stomach. Angus' funeral was taking place the following weekend but because of all the stuff he was experiencing, he had to ditch it. He had no idea what to do. Four Supremes were carving havoc on the streets and people were calling him a murderer. He felt so sick that thinking had become a great difficulty for him. He could also feel a lump of anger forming in his throat. He was about to get up and head upstairs when it started again; Jack Price's gruesome telepathy. It felt like it got more painful each time. Blood was gushing from his ears. He felt the urge to scream but he did not want to worry Miriam who was in the kitchen. He instead used his heightened speed to get upstairs then he put on his costume and rushed to the abandoned warehouse.
