At first the collar seemed to be moving more or less smoothly, with only a slight shaking that I learned to associate with running. Then it started bouncing around all over the place with wild movements, up, down, left, right, backward and forward, but Esmeralda's collar stopped moving entirely. What was going on? Was Vivian fighting someone? Why wasn't Esmeralda doing anything?
I broke into a sprint. At least, since they stopped moving, I could catch up to them, but I still had some distance to go, and it took a few minutes before I arrived. When I did, I found a man kneeling on the floor before Esmeralda, and an unconscious man lying on the ground between them with a nasty lump on his forehead and a broken, bloody nose.
"It's because you didn't do your job that she got injured. Do you really think an apology is enough?"
"No, boss."
