"How did it go? What did he want?" Diva asked as soon as the cell door closed behind Alexis.
"He wants me to help the rebels extort my father."
Alexis landed heavily on the bed and morosely gazed down at her lap.
"You're not going to do it, right?" There was a note of worry in Diva's voice.
"I don't know."
"Why? Why would you even consider helping the enemy? You know anything they gain will hurt your family."
"Of course I know that! It's just…It's not so simple. I have other considerations, too."
"What considerations can be more important than your family's safety? I know you'd give up your life for them, unless something's changed while I was gone."
"No, you're right. I'd die to protect them, to protect the kingdom. It's just…"
Diva's eyes widened as she realized what Alexis was trying to keep from her.
"It's me, isn't it? He threatened to hurt me if you don't do what they want. That's why you're wavering."
