Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 - New Friends

I finally awoke. I sat up on my bed and heard some arguing, and very faintly I heard Astrid arguing with a man. I walked out of my tent, presumably built by Astrid.

"We are not savages Bjorn!" Astrid argued

"No, we are not, but the Christians are not our allies, you must be slow in the head if you think we should let him into our camp, who knows what he could do with the information he knows!" The man yelled back.

"Bjorn, I will not leave anybody still breathing to die on the battlefield alone, be it Christian or one of us! Bjorn you must listen, I need to show you this man!" Astrid calmed her tone and pulled Bjorn to a place where they wouldn't be heard, so I move closer to hear what they were saying

"This man, Ardent, was going to die from his wounds, a stab close to the neck, right in the middle of his collarbone, no man would've survived. He even lost his right arm Bjorn, and he seemed to get up with ease. Be it a different man, and blood loss would've ended him. The wounds he had just seemed to burn over, it looked like a burn scar."

"I, what? Impossible, let me see!"

Bjorn and Astrid walked out of Bjorn's tent. Bjorn scanned the camp, and laid his eyes on me. Walking towards me he ordered,

"Show me your neck! Now!"

I unbuttoned the top of my shirt and show Bjorn the now scarred-over wound

"There is no way, this is impossible, I saw you lying in the bed dead. I told them to just throw your body into the river, but no, 'We're not savages Bjorn." Bjorn mocked Astrid.

"But I made the right choice saving him, this is a blessing from the Gods! Ardent is blessed by The All-father himself, the one who gave him strength! We must let him stay!" Astrid attempted to convince Bjorn, but he was still staring at me, he looked confused and angry.

Bjorn finally spoke up and said

"Let me think about it, I will decide by sun-high tomorrow."

Bjorn walked away into his tent, bringing soldiers in with him, probably to discuss something.

"Hopefully Bjorn will let you stay, but frankly I don't -"

I cut off Astrid in her sentence.

"Astrid, I can't stay here. If I really am blessed by the gods like you say, what good will it do staying in some army camp. I can't just stay here."

"No! You can't leave, what good will it do if you're caught by a Indeviant patrol! Then what?"

"Then at least let me train, or do something." I suggested.

"Fine," Astrid said, "but I'm coming with you."

"If you wish, but I'm not going easy, I have to train hard for the days ahead." I smiled

"I think I can handle it." Astrid said with a smile, "Come on, this way"

The training was hard and awkward, I had to learn a new fighting style. Instead of swords and daggers, I used axes in their place. We trained for a few days and nights, and I was planning on leaving soon.

"Can I show you something?" Astrid asked

Astrid led me to an overlook of the camp, a great view of the night sky, and the stars that shone with it. It was beautiful.

"This is amazing, is it not?" Astrid asked.

"I agree with you on that, a nice way to end a long day of training. I used to only be able to look at the night sky from an opening in my room, but this is much better.

"You know Ardent, for as such a short time I've known you, I really enjoy your company, and I hope you can stay with us, if you want of course."

Surtr spoke up out of nowhere, "Do not let some women lead you astray from your path. I gave you the gift of life, and the prophecy is both of our responsibility now."

"I am very grateful for all you have done, and I can't do enough to repay you back, but I truly don't think this is the place for me. I think with everything going on, I need to find myself before I can be in the company of others. It's time to go to sleep, I'll see you in the morning, Astrid."

I stand up, take one more look at the sky, and head to my tent.
