Chapter 17 - Protection Line

Titus looked at her in worry. "Freya…are you in his thrall already?"

Freya shook her head. She turned to William. "I have come to be a teacher. If it was something like that I was looking for, I would have agreed to…I would have went somewhere else."

William's eyes narrowed at her little slip. "I see. We should talk more about this deal you almost agreed to some time in the future. But for now, we should go before we are late and the lovely prince decides to stake my heart."

Freya pursed her lips. "You haven't said anything about-"

"I will agree to it."

Freya sighed in relief. "Thank you."

She turned to Titus and bowed. "And thank you for you as well, Prince…I mean, Titus. You cared about my well being, despite the fact that we only talked a few words to each other before…you don't know how…you don't know how rare that is."

Titus blushed. "That…I would have done this for any body."

Freya nodded her head. "And that was why I wanted to say, that regardless of the outcome of the meeting with the principal, if there is something I can do, that does not break my morale code, bring harm to my family, or get me killed, I will help you with all of my ability and more."

William laughed. "That promise was far too conditional."

Titus looked unsure of how he should respond to her bluntness.

Freya bowed her head. "I am sorry that I am so…stingy…but I…I wanted to give you an honest answer."

Titus shook his head, a soft smile on his face. "You might be surprised by this, but it is good to hear the truth said so bluntly put than to find out in a dangerous situation. And there is only one outcome to this. You will get this job."

Freya smiled. "I hope so."

"Your conversation makes me want to play a soft melody and flash pink lights around you," William said to them, leaning next to Freya.

She felt his warm breath on her neck.

Freya yelped and stepped away, her back hitting the elevator wall.

Titus glared. "Didn't you just agree to her conditions, you blood sucking bastard!"

William sighed. "I didn't touch her. She got spooked on her own."

Freya blushed. "Um…don't we have to meet the Principal? We shouldn't keep them waiting."

William nodded and walked out of the elevator.

Freya followed after him, eyeing the burnt marks on the floor curiously. She had never seen that perticular spell up close before. Castor's Fire. A spell that used the nature of the castor to pick out the level of fire.

Freya looked at William's broad back, wanting to ask him a question.

"What is it?"

"Huh?"

"I can feel the burning eyes on my back," William said. "What is it?"

"Maybe she just hopes you would burst into flames if she looked long enough," Titus said through gritted teeth.

William gave Titus a look. "You might have magic and the Royal guards in your command, little boy. But don't forget that I am a Vampire. I can kill you before the others can kill me."

Titus gritted his teeth.

Freya sighed. She had thought Titus was the calm type, but it turned out that it was just her delusion.

"Well?" William said. "What did you want to ask?"

"That spell uses the Castor's nature to create the fire. A Vampire's magical nature is strong enough to melt things. That is believable. The seal on it controls its intensity is also believable. But why would it not hurt anyone? Shouldn't that spell have still hurt us a bit?"

William grinned and Titus frowned, looking at her in confusion.

"What?" Titus asked. "So it could have hurt us?"

"You tell me why," William said instead. "If are going to be my substitute, then you should be able to think of the right answer."

Freya frowned in thought as they continued their walk to the Principal's office.

The group fell silent, Titus looking at Freya occasionally without her noticing.

Freya gasped.

Titus whirled to face her in worry. "What happened?"

Freya gave him a sheepish grin. "Sorry. I…I think I figured it out…and I got excited."

Titus sighed in relief. "Thank god. I thought the Vampire got you."

Freya smiled. "Thank you for caring."

William leaned towards her. "So, what do you think it is?"

"Protection lines."

William rasied his eyebrow. "Huh?"

"The elevator walls have Protection Lines etched into it, keeping the occupants in it safe and there is also your own Protection Circle that would weaken the effects of the fire too."

William's hand went to the back of his ear where the small purple tattoo still glowed.

William smiled. "Quiet a smart one, aren't you? Let's go! I can't wait any longer to wash my hands off some brats into yours!"

Freya sweatdropped. "Wha…"

William gave her a strained smile. "I meant give you some of my classes as practice."

"I'm not deaf."

"You can pretend to be."

"It is not that easy."

"How would you know? Have you tried it before?"

Freya sighed. "Let's just go. The Principal is waiting, right?"

William smiled. "We are here already. And…Actually, he is not waiting at all. It was never one of his traits."

Titus and Freya stilled.

"What?" Freya asked.

William pulled out a black card and placed it against the wall.

A door appeared.

"Duck," William ordered.

Freya was the first one to obey him, she grabbed Titus by the collar and dragged him down with her when she saw that he was about to protest instead.

Just as William's hand went to the door handle, the door blew open inward.

A chair flew past the black-shirted man's head, and crashed into the wall behind them. The chair construction pieces, throwing splinters everywhere.
