Chapter Forty-Nine: All we have
The group sat in quiet thought, letting Clementine have her moment alone. Tommy broke the silence, speaking softly. "She's been through a lot. We all have."
Javi nodded. "We need to be strong for each other. We're all we've got."
After a moment, Javi stood up and walked to the closed door where Clementine had gone. He knocked gently. "Clem? It's Javi. Can I come in?"
There was a long pause before Clementine's tired voice answered, "Yeah, come in."
Javi entered the small, dark room. Clementine was sitting on the edge of the bed, her face buried in her hands. Javi sat down next to her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You don't have to go through this alone," he said softly.
Clementine looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen. "It's just... it's so hard to keep going sometimes."
Javi nodded. "I know. But you have us now. We're a team, and we'll get through this together."
Clementine managed a weak smile. "Thanks, Javi. That means a lot."
Back in the main room, Tommy, Kate, and Gabriel talked about what to do next. "We can't stay here forever," Kate said. "This place is safe for now, but we need to find somewhere more secure, with more supplies."
Tommy agreed. "We should stay here for the night, get some rest, and then head out first thing in the morning."
Gabriel, still weak from his injuries, nodded. "Sounds like a plan. But we need to be careful. Those mutated walkers are getting more dangerous."
As the group settled in for the night, they took turns keeping watch. The forest outside was eerily quiet, except for the occasional distant growl of a walker. Tommy took the first watch, his eyes scanning the dark trees for any signs of movement.
During his watch, Tommy couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. His instincts, sharpened from years of survival, told him something was out there. But as the hours passed and his shift ended without incident, he thought it was just his nerves.
When dawn broke, the group gathered their things and got ready to leave. Clementine, looking more composed after a night's rest, took the lead. "Let's move out. We need to find a safer place."
As they walked deeper into the woods, the group stayed alert. The memory of Eleanor's brutal death was still fresh in their minds, reminding them of the dangers around every corner.
After hours of walking through the dense forest, they came upon a small, abandoned town. The buildings were old and falling apart, with vines creeping up the walls and broken windows. It was clear no one had lived here for a long time.
"Let's check it out," Clementine said, motioning for the group to follow her.
They carefully explored the town, looking for any signs of life or supplies. Most of the buildings were empty, their insides looted long ago. But as they approached a large, sturdy building that looked like it had once been a school, they heard a faint noise from inside.
Clementine signaled for the group to be quiet as they carefully approached the entrance. Pushing open the door, they found themselves in a dimly lit hallway. The noise grew louder, echoing through the empty halls.
"Stay close," Clementine whispered, leading the group towards the sound.
They turned a corner and entered a large classroom. At the far end of the room, a person was bent over, rummaging through a pile of supplies. Clementine raised her weapon, ready to protect her group.
"Hey!" she called out firmly.
The person turned around, revealing a young woman with wild, scared eyes. She raised her hands in surrender, fear on her face. "Please, don't shoot! I'm just trying to survive, same as you."
Clementine lowered her weapon slightly, studying the woman. "Who are you?"
"My name is Lucy," the woman replied, her voice shaking. "I've been hiding here for weeks. There are others, too. We didn't think anyone else was still alive out there."
