Chapter 2 - THE NOTE

Vince was still so afraid, he had a deep fear of dogs, and he knew any minute the huge dog could launch forward and attack him.

Thinking about that alone is scary, and what could this little child do? the dog is so big and she is nothing for him to tumble over.

Fear pierced his heart as he said in a whisper, "Sorry, I am busy and I cannot stay."

"Please Sir, I can see that Jo-Jo scares you, but don't worry, his chain cannot reach beyond that brick so you are safe, trust me."

Holding his chest, Vince felt as though his heart was beating so loudly that even the child could hear it from where she stood.

Inching away to the opposite of the dog, following right behind the child, his body still trembling slightly.

Vince noticed her smiling as we walked inside, as though she had eyes behind her head to see his fear.

'Boy, this is embarrassing even this child appears to read me out like an open book.'

Becoming angry from deep within his heart as he glimpsed at her, 'Is she laughing at me? but that huge dog could give anyone a scare and a heart attack, especially the way he gritted his teeth so viciously and rushed at me.'

'Oh God, his growl was so heavy and frightful.' Vince secretly thanked God that the chain was thick and he didn't burst it.

While following the child he wondered at that moment, 'Why the child wasn't in school today when it's a normal school day?'

Glimpsing at her once more he saw water droplets on her face and her hair was wet as though she had now taken a bath and hurried to the front to greet him without drying herself properly.

When she calls out, "Mom, we have a customer." The way she spoke I could hear the joy in her voice, which seemed so welcoming.

'Do they invite everyone inside their home? and what sort of business they have for the child to phrase me as a customer?'

Giving the house a quick view, thinking 'The house is so small yet this child makes it so welcoming.'

As he enters inside he gets the shock of his life, feeling embarrassed for the second time. As he focuses on the person who gets up slowly and then turns to face him.

'She was not looking too well, but she was beautiful, with some grey hair looking like streeks between her blond hair. She wasn't too thick and maybe ranging right over fifty-five.

Vince immediately scoped around him in a glance not wanting it to be too obvious. What he realized straight away was that his first mistake was judging the book by its cover.

When he saw the house by the roadway he thought it was small, but now, he will know next time to never judge the book by its cover again.'

From where he stood at the entrance of the hall thinking ' I estimated the house may have about six rooms put together, but that was an understatement of the year.

The hall area was huge and could accommodate an average of almost forty people comfortably at one given time.

The dining room alone was about thirty to forty feet lengthways and about the same in width. A long dining table was set in the middle with about fourteen chairs.

Considering the matter he concluded in his mind that when he thought that it there house that is only their living and dining room alone. From the look of it, they seem to be a big family.

Walking nearer to the child's mom in the middle of the hall, Vince saw a long corridor about a hundred feet long, maybe even longer. The doors were about twenty feet apart on both sides of the corridor, The house was a split-level so the lower roof wasn't seen from the roadway.

To the extreme right, it has a large kitchen area. The house on the inside was painted baby blue and there were beautiful paintings on the wall.

Hearing the woman speaking Vince returned his attention to hear what she was saying.

"Good morning Ma'am, I am sorry to disturb you this early, My grandfather was supposed to come and visit you, but he wasn't feeling well, so he sent you a note."

"Who is your Grandfather, Son?" She speaks so gently and sweetly.

Vince responded to her in a soft tone, "Ma'am, you don't know him, but he has given me this note for you?"

Vince placed the sealed note in her hand, seeing how she took her time opening the note.

Vince looked at his time, wanting to leave but was afraid to rush her, even to rush outside with that dog. 'I see it has a fat chain but I am not taking any chance, one scare for the day is enough.'

As she read the note, Vince waited patiently. When the child's mother looked up at him and said, "Thank you!"

Vince wondered, 'Why was she thanking me,' then suddenly the door opened, and this young lady bolted in and rushed past him, going into the kitchen as though he wasn't even there.

When she opened the fridge, she began shouting at the child. "Haley, why is there never anything cold to drink when you are home?"

"Sorry, Carol, I was busy."

For a moment, I thought she was Grandfather's choice, but her hair wasn't black as the one in the photo, it was a honey blond and the mom had blond hair and the child's hair was just like her mom's. Also, the child said, Carol.

Vince realized that this young lady was very outspoken and rough in the way she shouted at the child. Looking at her she must be in her early twenties.

Twitching his nose as the fragrance from the roses he smelt earlier on his way down as he was walking towards the house filled the room, and lingered in his nostrils tickling his senses once again.

It fills the atmosphere which was so refreshing and welcoming just like when he heard the child's voice.
