Chapter 46 - The Reaction

Jania who was already poised ready to attack from behind was the first to react to the sudden execution. "Nulla misericordia, non secundi casus!" to which Null just nodded his head. Chris and Lisa followed suit "Nulla misericordia, non secundi casus!".

It was the creed of the Martian military. No mercy, No second chances. Living on mars was difficult and even the smallest mistakes could cause countless deaths. There were multiple incidences during the foundation of the Martian military where mercy and giving the enemy second chances had led to tragedy. In response, the creed was drilled into each military cadet.

The officers like Lisa and Chris and weren't as indoctrinated as the super-soldier candidates like Jania, and Null. The Military knew those giving out the orders had to have a more fluid mindset to adapt to different situations. The foot soldier had to follow orders no matter what, so were heavily indoctrinated into the righteousness of the Martian Military including its creed.

Jania was upset that Null had beaten her to the punch, she was just about to strike when he had collapsed. He had tried to kill them in a cowardly manner and deserved a more painful death. No mercy should be been given. The death was too painless for her liking.

Chris was feeling awful, he hadn't learnt anything from the second Pythia trial. He had been playing games without considering all the factors again. Except for this time, the result was real. He had not expected it to escalate that quickly. He had been enjoying the challenge of getting Bolat to confess but hadn't considered how he would react or the reaction of Jania, Null and Infy. The super-soldier programs had enforced into its candidates that loyalty to the group came above loyalty to an individual.

Lisa was concerned not how quickly it escalated, but at the final result. It had been too easy for Null to end a life, she couldn't even think of any defence against his attack. As a killing technique, it was brutal and effective. She wasn't lamenting the lack of due process but at the lack of information collected. Why did Phosphoro want them to go to that planet, did he want them dead or was there another motive? Questions she wanted answers for, but now it was too late.

Unit2317 was also confused. He had let infy overhear the conversation on purpose and the highest probability outcome was a confrontation but for it to be a lethal encounter was unexpected. He would have to reevaluate his expectation around the hybrid.

Vark walked over the kicked the corpse of Bolat in the head "Ye, Honorless goblin lover, I hope your souls rots and never entered the cycle of rebirth. That death was too quick. You should have been made to take the oath of redemption."

Vark was worried about how this was going to affect the Niddad family. Bolat crimes were significant, he conspired with a non-aligned alien to try and get their ward killed. How Bolat acted had shamed his house and the dwarven people. Without the oath of redemption, this act couldn't be cleared and would eternally affect the family of Niddad.

He took his staff and one of the gems glowed before locking Bolat Corpse in a Life field Stasis. One of his speciality spells which stopped the flesh from rotting.

"I will deal with funeral rights later, now we have some catching up to do. Let move to the meeting room."

Once in the meeting room, they told a very diluted version of the events on Delphi to now.

"That is very problematic. We dwarfs have no sway over the elves and we couldn't get you an audience even if you want one. Also, you wouldn't be able to forcible enter the elven space. Civilian planets are well protected from unexpected visitors. Maybe the valtaui could assist." Suggested Vark

"We have no dealing with the elves and unless it is a council sanction activity we cant get involved. Sorry" replied Unit2317

Chris wanted to learn from his previous mistakes.

"What about sending something to reconnoitre the planet? We don't even know why the planet is so important to us"

Jania was quick to volunteer "I will go, I just need Null and Infy to upgrade the Eous".

After a bit more planning most agreed that some active recon was needed but it still posed the problem of getting there. The whole solar system for planet Ollhelian was under constant surveillance and there was no way to jump gate in and teleporting to a location you can't see is extremely dangerous unless you were a master like the black dragon.

It was a problem that Infy had hoped to fix by upgrading the Eous, he also wanted to develop two more ships. It was time they each got their own personal ship instead of the shuttle.
