The sun rose and the voice of the universe returned to normal. Whatever had happened was linked to the day-night cycle. The others were trying to convince the boys that they needed to complete the mission. They had no way to explain to the mission board that they couldn't complete the mission because of "feeling".
It is not that they doubted the twins but they had no evidence to present that the planet was dangerous. All of the sensor reading and video couldn't shed any light on what was going on.
"We are going to have to investigate the source. It is the only lead we have and maybe we will be able to stop whatever is happening" Chris had called an early morning strategy meeting. To him, the problem was clear they should all enter the building identified by Null and Infy and investigate.
Null and Infy had a different idea, they hadn't found the right words to convince the group of the dread they were filled with. "You all need to listen, we need to get out of here. Only death awaits us here. Whatever they have done to the life field should not have been done." Infy didn't want to go to some building to find out what abomination the previous inhabitant had made. Null and Infy had analysed the voice and had concluded that the changes had made some form of life.
The others could not convince the twins to come along so they had left behind at the shuttle or the forward operating base as they were calling it. Infy had made a clone and gave it to Lisa to take along. So Bolat, Lisa, Jania and Chris all travelled to the building identified last night. The building looked like all the others they had already surveyed.
They entered the building and it was just like all the others. To Chris, Lisa and Bolat it was no different at all. To Jania and the Infy clone who could see a wider range of frequencies, it was different. The Walls were covered in Alien text, it seemed random at first but Infy suspected there was some pattern.
Each letter had a different sound to Infy, which meant that each letter was linked to the fields. They hadn't found any evidence of any Zallium or other known substitutes.
Jania and Infy explained to the rest of the group what they had discovered.
"That sounds like true magic, it can't be a coincidence that we were assigned this planet and this city. Is it a warning? Or is someone trying to help us?" Chris had many questions but maybe in the middle of a building covered in magic wasn't the best time to be asking them.
"What now? It is useless knowledge if we can't use it" asked Bolat, he was technically the leader but he hadn't done much leading and wasn't even sure if staying was the best decision.
Infy had been analysing the writing to see if he could gain any more insight into what they had stumbled upon. He worked out there were 5 separate rings of text around the room and each of them linked to a different field. The most complex ring related to the life field, the simpler ones related to the Time, Space and Soul fields.
Hours passed by and the clone of Infy had been passing all the information they could gather back to Null and its main body. The others had done a detailed scan and search of the room and had not found anything different to the other building.
They had lost track of time and hadn't been watching the sun, as the sun started to set. The atmosphere in the building changed the writing on the wall became visible to everyone and started to glow with energy.
"Run!" Chris started to run but he got no response from the other members of the party. They had all become incapacitated by the violent screams of millions of souls over their mental links. It was a blessing that Chris wasn't psychically sensitive.
As soon as the clone of Infy detected the forced mental link, he had closed his link to the main body. Once the Infy clone connected to the screaming souls he finally understood what was going on but had to escape the room so it could connect back with his main body.
In the middle of the room a black portal was starting to form and even if Chris couldn't sense anything he knew that was an ominous sign.
"Chris grab the other others, knock them out with your stun stick if you have to. Take them to the sleeping berths, I will be back with my main body and Null"
Chris went into action, he was able to move his mum with no problems but had to stun both Jania and Bolat to get them to calm down enough to move. He had just got them both into sleeping berth when the black portal had finished forming. Chris hadn't noticed anything it just seemed to be a stable portal but it gave him the creeps.
Chris still got his laser out and connected it to his suit so he could guard against anything.
"Chris, Fire!" Chris didn't know why Null had asked him to fire but he did as requested and to his surprise the shot connected with something only a metre away.
"Keep firing don't stop" Null and Infy was already in their hybrid form and had just entered the room.
Null and Infy had no time for deniability or following the rules. They had cast two spells at once the first was an energy lens that changed radio waves into the visible spectrum and the second was a shield that shielded against the soul field.
The first spell allowed for Chris to see thousands of tentacles coming out of the portal, while the second gave the rest of the party a reprived from the voices. Just because they couldn't hear the screams anymore didn't mean they would recover anytime soon. They were in shock, the experience had shaken them mentally. They had been subjected to the anguish of millions of sentient souls.
The Tentacles had been blocked by the new shield put in place by Null, giving Chris some time to take stock of the situation. "Infy, do you know what that thing is?" Chris didn't expect him to know, but hoped that Infy could provide him with some information.
"It was their last-ditch effort of survival. It was supposed to be an Ark. Once my clone connected to the souls he had been able to gather the missing pieces. They had tried to create a pocket dimension that would hold their population in suspended animation."
"I'm guessing that is not what happen?" asked Chris
"The spell they were trying to cast took too much energy and required knowledge they didn't possess and that abomination is the result. It is made up of the life forces and souls of millions of indigenous life-forms and they are locked in a time loop unable to die. Every night it exits the pocket dimension to feed. It uses the life field to create a siren call. All the animals on this planet are drawn to this location by the call. The abomination will then absorb the animals to keep the spell active."
Null then also chipped into the conversation. "It is time to kill this thing! Chris, can you attack these locations?"
Chris did as instructed and once he hit the last location, Null teleported all 6 of them back to the shuttle.
"Halt! you are to be detained for violating council ruling 7631." Valtaui Unit 2314 was called in for a code 0 breach and found the Human-Angel was once again using true magic and was now in the form of a seraph.
"Hehehe, Now comes the fun!" Null had completely Ignored the Valtaui enforcement officer because he knew something else was coming.
They hadn't killed the Abomination all they had done was break the prison and released it from its time loop. In the distance, Null and Infy could see the Abomination in its full form it was at least 2km in diameter and was visible to everyone.
"What is that!" Unit 2314 had never seen anything like it.
