There were still patients coming to the infirmary keeping them busy even after the epidemic had disappeared mysteriously. The illness brought to the infirmary were common ones, colds etc. Kana and Kaoru were still hard at work and Susumu was so much help.
Just like that they had spent a month at the infirmary, Kaoru felt she had become a physician already. Haha! Mind you, all she did was look for herbs, tend to the small herb garden she constructed and administer the medicine made by the physicians but indeed she picked up some skills.
Today Kaoru went to pick herbs and Susumu went with her. By the time they got back it was dark but she felt satisfied. Kana was seated on the veranda of the infirmary with the children there for treatment gathered around her, there were some adults too. They seem enamoured by whatever she was saying.
'Let's go in and change' said Susumu but she waved him off.
'Take the herb basket to the head physician, I will sit here and listen to Kana's story.'
Susumu nodded and disappeared into the infirmary. Kaoru then lent Kana her ears.
'She had to get married to one of her brothers as then there was none to marry, what could she have done? She loved them both!' Kana was saying.
'That's disgusting! Wanting to have them both, that's too greedy!' a boy interrupted and her eyes lit with fury but she managed to tamp it down and forced a smile onto her face.
'Yes, yes. It was truly disgusting, but the marriage never came to pass, father disappeared and her brothers had responsibilities. Father put her in charge of his territories before he left, maybe this was to be a comfort of sorts.'
Kana drowned on but Kaoru had already tuned her out, it was just a story about a very twisted family but the children seemed to like it. People do like scandalous stories, she mused. She stood up and went into the infirmary.
After Kana was done the children dispersed and she then told them they were returning to the temple the following morning.
