The day went on pretty quickly as I went from training to helping my mom with her luna duties.
I've always adored my mom as she moved around, helping the other people in our pack, especially the less fortunate.
My parents were unique and this got them into a lot of arguments with other packs, but as an original pack lesser packs would always lose to my father and mother.
Unlike other packs they didn't believe that omegas should stay in the kitchen or stay at home doing the unwanted jobs. My dad allowed his people to move between ranks as they pleased.
Only your skill determined your rank, that's what my father always told us.
We had an annual contest for all who wanted to be warriors and my parents set up funds for those that were poor to go to school outside of our pack lands.
We were a large pack, one of the biggest, we had our own University where wolves and humans could study.
There were also a few vampires, all were welcome.
"Alianna? Amaya?" I heard my father's voice through the pack link as he called for my mother and I.
It was odd that he would communicate with us so publicly. Normally he would just link us directly.
'Maybe it's something he wants everyone to hear.' Ares says in my head.
'Probably' I told her, I had the same suspicions as she did. We shared a mind after all.
"Dad? What's up?" I ask as I noticed that my mom is preoccupied with helping a new mother and her daughter.
"Darling, I'm sorry, but we need to cancel your birthday party tonight." My dad informed me.
No wonder he wanted to tell us over the pack link. It would save me the embarrassment of having to tell everyone myself, not that I would be embarrassed.
But what puzzled me was why he would cancel it. It took a lot to get my father to change his plans. He was quite stubborn when it came to organizing things. At one point my mom would even tease him that he was being more of a luna than an alpha.
"I know Amaya, you wanna know why." My dad said in a voice clear enough for everyone to hear.
"Yeah dad, why? It's my twentieth birthday." I tell him. A wolf's twentieth birthday was the second most important birthday, it was when we could finally find our mate.
"The Council was called for an emergency meeting, all the alphas will be here tonight." My dad informs us, catching us all by surprise.
The Council was only ever called when there was a big enough threat to our kind.
They were considered the protectors of our species and of the paranormal world. They consisted of all the alphas of the original packs, the original vampires, and the head witch or wizard.
It was rare for the Council to meet since threats barely even happened, add to that the fact that most species did not get along so well.
Our pack, the Shadow Pack, was among the original wolf packs. An ancestor of mine was blessed by the moon goddess with the ability to protect his people.
That's what set our pack apart, our alphas were chosen by our dedication to our people.
Each original pack was different, we all came to be for different reasons, and those reasons became the driving force of our alphas.
"What time will they start to arrive?" I hear my mom ask my dad through the pack link.
"The earliest ones should arrive as early as six pm tonight." My dad informs us.
I hear as some omegas begin to shuffle behind me, quickly moving to get the rooms ready. Whenever other alphas visited they usually stayed the night since most meetings lasted that long.
"Everyone is coming?" My mom asks my dad, making me wonder what she meant.
"Yes, everyone." My dad tells her as he cuts the link.
"What did that mean?" I ask my mom as she gives instructions to the omegas.
"When your dad gets back." She tells me as she walks towards the kitchen. "Go hangout with your friends while I prepare things. I'm sure you'll want to see them today. We'll be really busy when the alphas and the other leaders arrive."
"Thanks mom." I tell her as I hug her tight and peck her on the cheek.
I quickly run up to my room and texts my friends Ashley and Sage to meet me at our favorite coffee shop in thirty minutes. They already know that my party is cancelled so we might as well just hangout.
I'm glad mom doesn't force me to help out, I know she needs the help, but I want to savor what time I have with my friend.
I'm quite aware that there is a high chance that my mate will be among the alphas tonight. And if he wasn't among them, he would probably be an alpha of a powerful pack.
'I like a powerful alpha.' Ares said in a sensual tone.
'We don't even know who he is and you're already horny for him, calm down!' I scold my wolf.
I quickly check the time and I see it's only three thirty pm. It gives me enough time to hang out with my friends and celebrate my birthday before having to attend to alpha duties.
As I walk back down the steps, I find my mother, father, and brother sitting in the living room as they discuss what needs to be done for tonight.
"Amaya, a word?" My father says as he gestures for me to come over.
I nod and I walk up to join them.
'They seem awfully serious.' Ares cautiously says as we join our family.
"Amaya, among our guests tonight will be the alphas of the Silver Moon and Red Moon packs. As you are aware, the two packs don't get along." My father tells me.
I simply nod in response as I listen to him.
"The thing is, the former alpha of the Silver Moon pack has just handed power to his eldest son, making the alphas of the Silver Moon and Red Moon packs first cousins." My father explained.
'I wonder where he is going with this?' Ares askes in my head.
'I thought he was going to give me a mate talk, I guess it's something more political.' I tell Ares as I try to focus my attention back on the conversation at hand.
"The new alpha of the Silver Moon pack blames his uncle, the former alpha of the Red Moon pack for his mother's death. So expect it to be a very hostile situation." Dad warned.
"Don't forget they will both be trying to sniff out if Amaya is their mate." My brother said as he reminded my father.
"We'll cross that bridge if it happens." Dad said with a sigh as he shook his head. "I doubt it will happen. She is an alpha, the moon goddess doesn't like taking alphas from their packs."
"What if I am mated to one of them though?" I asked my father and brother as I looked at their sad expressions.
'Dad and Merrick want us to be alpha' Ares tells me.
'But what if that's not what the moon goddess wants?' I ask her with a sigh.
"Then pray that it's the alpha of the Silver Moon pack, he is the better man." My father said with a frown.
