"So they are all coming over today?" Ashley asked as she looked around making sure no one could hear her.
I wanted to laugh at her adorable expression, it wasn't a secret that our pack would be having important guests tonight. My dad told me over the packlink, you didn't need to be a genius to figure things out.
"Duh Ashley." Sage said as she rolled her eyes at Ashley. "Amaya's dad already told all of us through the packlink that the council was coming over, I don't understand what's wrong with you." Sage grumbled, making me laugh.
"Calm down Sage." I told her. "I'm sure Ashley is just making sure she got it right."
Dad always told me that the key to being a good alpha or luna was to understand and not jump into conclusions.
Being hot tempered and jumping into conclusions has gotten a lot of alphas killed and a lot of packs to be defeated.
"So Amaya, have you spotted your mate yet?" Ashley asked with a mischievous look on her face.
I couldn't help but laugh at her expression, they both knew that it was highly unlikely that my mate would be from our pack.
"You both know that it's rare for daughters of Alpha lineage to find their mates in the same pack." I said with a frown. "Even my mother comes from a different pack because she was an Alpha's daughter."
"So you'll probably have to leave." Ashley said as her eyes began to tear up.
"Oh, come on Ashley, I doubt we would be able to stay." Sage was clearly annoyed by how emotional Ashley was getting.
She was right, ever since we were children we were all brought up to expect that once we found our mates we would have to leave our homes and join their packs.
It was how things were done over centuries and it wasn't something that would change overnight because a couple of girls didn't want to get separated.
"There is a chance that Amaya won't have to go though." Sage said as she gave me a hopeful glance. It seemed she didn't want me to leave either.
"What do you mean?" I asked Sage as I gave her a confused look. "We all know that if I'm mated to an Alpha I can't stay. I have to move to become the Luna of his pack."
"And what if your mate isn't an Alpha?" Sage asked me, catching me off guard. It was unheard of for the daughter of one of the original werewolf pack alphas to not be mated to an Alpha.
"I'd be the first then." I said with a shrug.
"Amaya, the whole pack knows that both your father and brother think you should be alpha." Ashley pointed out. "And your brother would rather be head warrior than hold the title of alpha."
"You and my brother are talking a lot now?" I asked Ashley.
I knew that she liked Merrick, they were even dating secretly, not that my parents or her father wouldn't allow them to. That was the problem with being a wolf, we could date all we wanted until we turned twenty, but the moment we did we would drop everyone and everything for our mate.
"We've always been friends." Ashley said. "I don't know what you are trying to imply."
"She isn't trying to imply anything, you are just putting meaning into her words because you won't just admit that you're dating Merrick Raven." Sage scoffed, making me laugh.
"Look, Ashley, it's alright if you want to date my brother." I told my friend with a smile, I knew Ashley could use all the support she could get.
"And what if his mate arrives?" Ashely asked us.
"So what if his mate arrives, at least you know what it's like to be in love and to fall in love, unlike little Miss Alpha here." Sage said as she pointed at me.
"It's true." I said with a laugh. "Look at Sage, she had fallen in and out of love because of men finding their mates, it's never stopped her."
Sage shrugged at my words.
"Who knows, you and Merrick might just end up being mates." Sage added with a grin.
It wasn't unlikely, Ashley was Beta Daniel's daughter, she was from our pack which meant her family was an original werewolf beta family.
Her bloodline was strong, just like mine and Sage's were.
"I don't think I can be luna." Ashley said with a frown.
"Who said anything about you being Luna?" Sage asked with a laugh. "Amaya will be alpha, which means that Merrick will have his pick of roles to take over in the pack. My bet is, he'll take dad's. They are always together now."
Sage's father was head warrior of the Shadows Pack, he was one of the strangest fighters I've had to come up against. Even with my alpha lineage I couldn't beat her father, he was always better than me.
"You know what, enough sulking around about mates." Sage suddenly said as she stood up, almost knocking our drinks over. "It's Amaya's birthday for crying out loud, why are we going to let men ruin our day. Did your dad give you his card?" Sage asked me.
I laughed as I took out the platinum card my father had given me as a birthday gift.
"He gave me something even better." I tell them with a grin.
"Perfect, let's hit those shops and max out Amaya's new card." Sage said as she dragged us out of the coffee shop and through the mall.
