On his way back, Jing Yue gripped the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles turned white. He didn't know that Tang Ning was seeing someone and he couldn't deny the fact that it didn't please him. She even went to the extent of lying to him just because she wanted to spend time with her boyfriend.
After having some snacks, the two decided to walk instead, as they would get to spend more time with each other. "You mean your boss did all that for you?" asked Daiyu. "Yes. Unbelievable isn't it?" asked Tang Ning. "Very. It makes me wonder what his intention is," she said.
"What do you mean by that?" "I don't know either. I wonder if he's just kind or...if he likes you?"
"Likes me? There's no way that could happen," Tang Ning said as if it was the most impossible thing to happen. "Why not? You are a beautiful and kind girl. Any man would fall for you." "I don't think he would be attracted to me. My boss loved his wife very much and she was so beautiful, I wish you could see her pictures." "Even then. We are all different and everyone is beautiful in their own way," said Daiyu.
Tang Ning gave it a thought as they continued walking. A man as handsome, rich and gentle as her boss would never get attracted to her.
Perhaps, their age difference was big where she was twenty two and she was sure that he was in his thirties although he didn't look like it. "What about you?" she heard Daiyu say and she turned to look at her. "What about me?" she asked. "Do you like him?" she asked. "Of course not! What makes you say that?! He's my boss."
"I know that he's your boss but the heart never knows that. And judging by the way you've been talking about him, I now doubt your answer." She kept quiet and pondered over her words. Did she like her boss? But there's no way that could ever happen. No, she shook her head.
At night, they had supper without Jing Yue who hadn't yet come back. When Tang Ning was done putting the twins to sleep, she sat in the living room waiting for her boss. After much waiting, she was yet to retire to her room when she heard footsteps coming and she sat upright. When she saw him, she stood up. "Welcome back Mr Jing Yue," she said. He nodded and was yet to pass by her when she said," Sir, I wanted to tell you something."
He turned to look at her and she said," Uh, at the restaurant earlier. He is my friend and nothing more." "What makes you think you owe me any explanation?" he asked. "Because I told you that I was going to meet a girl but you saw me with a man," she blurted. "Do you have anything to feel guilty of?" he asked.
"No. I just wanted to assure that I went to meet a friend. Feng Shufen is just a friend," she said. "It is alright. You can go to sleep," he walked away, leaving her behind.
In the middle of the night when Jing Yue was sleeping, he heard the door of his room open followed by small steps walking towards his bed. On sitting up, it was little Huan who had come to stand besides his bed. Seeing her cheeks stained with tears, he asked," What is it Jing Huan?" "The monsters," she said in a small voice. "What happened?" he asked as he got up and made her sit on the bed.
"The monsters were chasing me. They wanted to eat me," she said. "That was only a bad dream Jing Huan. It was not real."
"It was real. They wanted to eat me with their big teeth," she said.
"Alright. Come here," he said and she crawled to him.
He laid on the bed and tucked her under his chin as his fingers ran in her hair. Afterwards, his hands encircled her back as he held her to sleep.
Tang Ning too was having a restless night. She tossed and turned in the bed, not able to come up with any sleep. When she recalled the conversation she had with Daiyu, it made everything worse. Did she really like her boss? Could it be the reason why she no longer had strong feelings for Feng Shufen as before? But that was impossible, she thought.
Her boss was a widower and there's no way he would have eyes for another woman.
She reached for her teddy bear and cuddled it to sleep.
The following day in the evening before dinner, Tang Ning went to the kitchen to bake a cake. As she was still picking the ingredients, the kitchen door was opened and Little Huan came in. "What are you cooking pretty auntie?" she asked. "I'm going to make a chocolate cake," she replied. "Ohh. I can't wait to taste it," she said. "You will eat however much you want. Are you done with the assignment I gave to you?" she asked and she shook her head. "Alright then. You won't eat the cake before completing the assignment," she said. "Okay. I will go get done with it right now," she said before running out.
A while later when she heard the door open again, she asked," What is it again?" "What are you making?" she heard a voice and she quickly turned to see her boss. On seeing him, she didn't know when her heart started racing. Her hands started trembling and she stopped mixing the ingredients. "Welcome back Mr Jing Yue," she said. "Thank you. What are you making?" he asked. "A cake." "I wish to taste it," he said and she raised her eyes to look at him. She didn't know why it sounded as if he was referring to a different thing, not the cake and her cheeks reddened at the thought. "Sure," she replied and turned to continue mixing the ingredients. He passed by her and walked towards the fridge.
