Chapter 4 - Chapter 04

Authors note- hello everyone I'm a new writer but I will be posting here alongside on Scribblehub if anyone wants to read there too. Thank you

Standing in front of a mirror, Aidan adjusted his collar, after sleeping off his fatigue he recovered his stamina.

"Why couldn't they cancel work, aren't they worried about the strange phenomenon above the city?" Aidan didn't understand his company's mindset.

Although nothing had happened for the last five days since the appearance of the goblin he killed, much to his relief. However, what would happen if something bad happened due to the storm?

Although Aidan did see money as important he didn't believe in endangering his life over a paycheck.

After graduating he decided to move out to Portland to work at a large financing company. Aidan walked out to the window to stare at the storm in the distance.

Unknown to the rest of the world, Aidan was the most worried. Since he knew what would happen soon.

"Status open," he said out loud as the blue window appeared.

"The quick leveling will start to die down from now on," he said.

For the past five days, he abandoned the thought of sleep. Instead, he pushed himself to the limits, training his body to surpass its limits. He kept on swinging his steel sword too after returning back to his apartment after the faithful night to be at least prepared for whatever might happen in the future.

Aidan couldn't explain, he didn't know why but he knew something was telling him to prepare for the worst.

He smiled and grabbed everything he needed. He stood there in front of the door as he was reminded of the goblin. Aidan looked back and packed his sword in the case and stored a small steel shield inside his bag pack. He shrugged his shoulders while thinking of the worst possibility that could occur, knowing fairly well he was wearing a custom thin leather vest to protect him.

---

Aidan clad himself in equipment under his work suit. He drew quite an attention since he had something clothed strapped on his back. However, most didn't bother to care.

"Calvin, I'm here," a tall man came out from an office dressed from top to bottom in a rather high-end dark blue suit.

"Aidan, can you at least give me a good reason next time you don't want to come in? And another thing, stop acting like I'm your boss. We are friends, said Calvin.

"Shut it, Calvin. You know I can't do that with Harvey trying to find a way to demote me"

"About Harvey, he has gone missing, since you left there were four other employees who've gone missing," Calvin said with a faint awkward smile.

Aidan stood silent, unable to believe Calvin's remark.

He knew from Calvin's expression he was worried. Aidan knew that meant another monster must've found another victim.

Aidan let out a long breath. He tidied up himself and grabbed Calvin's shoulder don't worry, nothing is going to happen.

Calvin was one of Aidan's university friends. Together they spend long nights studying through the hard times trying to get a good job. After all those years they both landed jobs working at the same large financing company.

After two years they were able to climb up the ladder. Although life wasn't easy they succeeded. It was true Adan wasn't happy without his family, all he had now was his best friend Calvin.

Aidan are you sure you're okay?" Calvin asked Aidan

"Aidan" Calvin repeated himself

"It's been a while since you've been home, how is it going with your family have you considered to return. He could remember well that Aidan wasn't to fond of being far from his family since they came to Portland.

Yeah, it's all good," muttered Aidan

Aidan put on a fake smile while replying to her.

--

Sitting at his office, Aidan continued to speak to Calvin. His eyes glanced around constantly witnessing these people enjoying life without a care, it got him thinking.

These people don't care at all about the rift in the middle of downtown.

It put Aidan in an uncomfortable mood. He was already on alert with Harvey's disappearance due to the rift in the garage and now his coworkers made him feel more annoyed.

Aidan intervened.

"What is your opinion on the rift in the sky?"

Calvin fell silent. He pondered on how to reply to him.

"I'd be lying to you If I said I'm not worried. The problem is worrying won't help change anything. So it's better to do what I can right now," said Calvin.

"Shouldn't you at least stay far away from potential danger," he tried to provoke him.

"Nothing is going to happen, Aidan," Calvin was trying to keep everyone calm.

But as if fate was trying to tell him differently, something did happen.

Breaking News!! In the distance, several employees were watching the local news when an alert went off.

"Citizens of Portland, we are informing everyone to stay indoors. We have received reports that countless creatures throughout the whole world are appearing from the fractures in the skies. The same thing is now occurring here in Portland. We Repeat Stat In Doors! Major cities like Seoul, London, New York have also reported to also experiencing similar creatures appearing. This is not a drill!"

"Did you hear that!?" Aidan couldn't believe what he was hearing from the distance television.

Raise the volume on the television, Aidan shouted!

"Hear what? Calvin asked not knowing what Aidan had just heard.

Calvin stood by the glass windows glancing outside from the sixth floor. Aidan couldn't help glance at Calvin and he too saw something outside. He stood up and hurried to the glass window. Standing beside Calvin, witnessed what Aidan saw.

"Is that what I think it is ?" asked Calvin.

Aidan nodded as he too could see what was happening just now. Bright flames could be seen from afar but Aidan knew that the large flames were the results of several buildings on fire. He knew something big had just happened. He could feel his heartbeat beating faster from the overwhelming emotions inside his mind.

"Please not right now."

He pleaded that it wasn't true. His eyes traced towards the direction of the rift in the sky and his eyes turned wide. Calvin noticed the look on Aidan's face. But he was more surprised to see his body's reaction.

Aidan clenched both of his hands intending to prepare for the worst. He glanced once more at the sky red clouds and blue shimmering lights.

They are here. Aidan muttered

"Calvin, we need to get out of here." Shouted Aidan

"Eh, what? Why?" Calvin got flustered by Aidan's sudden request.

"Didn't you hear the news report?" A coworker in the back responded responded to Calvin question"

Aidan ignored him and pulled in Calvin.

"Calvin, this is important, do you trust me?" asked Aidan.

He nodded, nervously by Aidan's sudden change of behavior.

"Go get your car keys and anything you can use as a weapon?" Aidan explained or else we're going to die here" said Aidan.

Needless to say Calvin couldn't understand anything that was happening

"Aidan, don't you think— his words were cut halfway off as Aidan cut him off.
