Chapter 12 - Old Rules (2)

Mana sickness was a rare illness that occurred during the awakening. Some individuals were not able to fully open their mana circuits. This caused the body to become ravaged and weak. This made the individual sickly and can leave them bedridden. There was no way to decide who would be affected. This was the plan that Caroline came up with. It would be a tragic fact but would not cause them to lose face.

Meanwhile, Asher sat in the darkened room on the windowsill over looking the garden. The lights and colorful clothes was beautiful. He sat alone in his room. He thought this must have been a cruel joke from the gods above. He was set as worthless person in his past life, only to become another worthless person.

In his last life, his own family made sure that he knew that he was worthless and the source of all of their problems. His father was a rich business man and left his mother when he found out she was pregnant. He even went as fair to public deny his relation to him. This caused his mother to hate him. She would rather have had a man take care of her than another mouth to feed. In the end, she hung herself and left an extensive note blaming him. He was then past around in the foster system. Most were drunks, and they wouldn't hit him if he was lucky

He had not thought about that vile woman in so long. He left the twisted memories returned to him. The screaming, The pain. He felt hands wrapped around his neck choking him trying to extinguish his life. He say the twisted face of the vile woman. Her messy black hair and her heartless eyes. "You worthless bastard. You should have never been born. All you cause is misery." Her voice repeated over and over as the hands tighten around his neck.

A knock on the door caused the memory to be pushed back into the depths of his mind. He felt like he was finally able to breath. He thought he had but that life behind him, but he guessed that the scar ran to deep. He got up from his position at the window and walk to open the door. When he opened the door, he was met with Grace who had a tray of food.

"I thought you might be hungry so I brought you some food." Grace hand the young master the tray. She looked at Asher with pitiful eyes. Asher always had a happy go lucky attitude when it came to most things. But now Asher's eyes looked hollow like no light could be reflect from them.

"Thank you." He took the tray and shut the door. He set the tray on his vanity and sat in front of the tray and just stared at it. He didn't feel like eating at all. He felt overall hopeless. Did it even matter that what he did? Things like 'destiny' or 'fate were always determined by the people with power, and those with out power could only shut up and take what ever the powerful ones wanted. It was a different world, but it was the same old rules. The only difference was that in his previous life, power was determined by money and in this world it was magic.

He finally looked up in the mirror and looked at his own hollow eyes. He looked horrible like all life had left him. He thought that he was granted a easy life for surviving so many hardships in his past life, but now he knew he was mistaken. Anger boiled in his heart. Why did he have to endure this kind of powerless over and over? Was he just meant to be the play thing of people more powerful than him? Why did he always have to be the one who had to suffer this?

He let out a laugh. If anyone heard him, they would have believed him to be a mad man. "If that is my purpose then I reject it. Let someone else be your bitch. I spent my last life fighting for my place, and when I had it, it was cruelly taken from me. No more. It is my turn to take everything." He spoke to the ceiling as if he was challenging the heavens themselves.

He pick up a small sandwich from the tray and bit into it. Somehow, even though he had tasted a sandwich a thousand times, this time it tasted so much better. He looked into his reflection. His eyes were no longer hollow like a doll. They were more lively than ever. "If I am cursed to a horrible fate, then I should not hold anything back." This was the resolve in his heart.

He was not helpless this time. He still had some magics of his own. He just needed to figure out how to make the most use out of the powers he was given. Enchantment, alchemy, enhancement, taming, illusion, and spatial. These magics were his and if he learned how to use them properly then it wouldn't matter that he had less elements. He would be stronger than anyone. The key was fusion magic.

Individually, these element were pretty much useless, but together they could make anything happen. That was the nature of fusion magics. It was two magics work together to amplify the faults of each other. But before that he had to master his individual elements. He already knew where he need to go to get the answers of how to use his magics. He began to eat up everything Grace brought him quickly before opening his screen. This was the first time he had looked at it since his awakening.
