Chapter 44 - Heartless

The alpha observed the face of the girl closely, searching for the wrinkles of worry, even a grain of distress could've worked in his favour, but all the odds appeared against him. The reaction was opposite to what he had expected. The professor's lips curled up, a smile reaching her eyes as she opened her mouth.

"You and vampires must be allies. One sucks on the blood and leaves the body to be eaten by the other", storing the information, the girl looked into the eyes and held her lips sealed, taking her time to listen to the rhythmic music the slapping of waves were producing, so calm yet so loud.

The alpha's lips slightly parted in disbelief. Out of what he said, the girl picked up on the part that was of the least importance, entirely ignoring the threatening possibility. She was locked in the arms of the werewolf who could eat her up alive. As the matter of fact, some of the werewolves wouldn't eat a human's meat. Only a few preferred raw meat of hunters. They would hunt animals, like rabbits and deer. Fruits and vegetables were also liked by some in their human form.

"Could you perhaps arrange a meet-up with a vampire? I would like to ask their leader some questions as well", the alpha stared back at the professor, dumbfounded. Wasn't she getting far and wide in her whatsoever act? Above all, she wasn't fearful that the vampires could drive his fangs down her neck.

"But you gotta stay by my side okay? I don't trust th- -", the voice was caught up in the throat as the hand came over the mouth again. However, this time it didn't only cover the lips but intuitively blocked her nostrils too. There was a knock at the door, followed by another light thump when another pair of feet showed before the cabin.

"Are you looking for the alpha, Úna?", the professor heard a rather familiar voice coming from the outside. It was one of those boys who brought her to their alpha.

"Good morning, Leofric. Yes, I'm here for the alpha", the second voice sounded more than enough dominated to belong to a female.

"Haha...all right, morning to you too, and he has been gone on the round", a subtle chuckle erupted in the air. So, the werewolves did also know how to laugh, the professor thought.

"Okay. Are the new kids getting along with the teaching sessions?", the female asked. Her pitch was normal but her voice came off with authority as if she was in charge.

"Yes. As expected, they're sharp and quick...", the rest of the words left unheard by the professor. Her eyes started getting wider at the lack of oxygen. The passageway was blocked by the hand of the alpha who was intensively waiting for the girl outside to leave.

Scarlett tried to push the man off of her, but he didn't even lift a finger until he heard the footsteps fading away. As he loosened his hand which was pressed tight against the mouth of the girl, she gasped for air. He was too immersed in the conversation going on outside that he didn't realize he had nearly suffocated her to death.

"Is this your way to get your meat? Chocking it!", the girl inhaled as much amount of oxygen as she could to calm her uneven breathing. A few more minutes and she would be lying on the floor.

"Follow me", the alpha opened the door and walked out. The path was clear. Park members would be awake any time. He needed to expose her lie at her face.

"Is he for serious? Does he think I'll follow him back into the jungle after what he has done to me?", watching the unclothed back of the alpha from the door, the girl talked to herself in pure disbelief.

"If he thinks so, he's right", saying that, she also got out and followed the man. She didn't have much of a choice anyway. After walking for what felt like an hour or so on his lead, they reached the hilly area. There were wild plants grown to the size of an average person's height. She would've plopped back if it weren't for the man clearing the way.

Scarlett had no idea what was going on in the peanut-sized brain of the man so she quietly followed him. However, soon she felt her leg aching in a burning sensation. She glanced down, but before she could ask about the thick brown rope she had just stepped on, the sight of a jagged wound on her lower calf came into her view. She thought it to be a minor cut.

"Keep walking", when the alpha sensed her stopping in her track, he commanded.

"Do werewolves don't have hearts? Or perhaps you've yours jabbed out by a vampire as you are expecting me to continue walking with this- - -", before she would finish her sentence, she heard some movements in the bushes.

When she turned her head to the left side where the sound was coming from, she saw something coming in her direction. The next instant, the alpha was standing beside her, the point of the arrow held in between his index finger and thumb at a centimetre of distance from her eyes. Narrow escape. He looked at the perplexed face of the girl. She was also as confused as him. She did not travel in the past to be knocked down by an arrow, or the vampires she had not met yet or the cold alpha. She didn't come to die there!

Upon crossing the borderline, the alpha's ears picked up on the sound coming from behind the trees and bushes. He was ready for what was about to come, after all, he was standing on the land of his enemies. However, he expected himself to be at the aim of the released arrow instead of the girl. What he hadn't foreseen was the hunter to be shot at by her own people.
