It was unknown if there was a God, or a pantheon of gods, or even if any higher power(s) existed. All that was known was that 'They' existed from the beginning. Stories and legends of their existence were passed down from the dawn of human memory, tales of the fearsome Wendigo, or of the enchanting sirens, all eventually faded to myth and legend as the age of science became prominent. They watched as the pyramids were erected with a silent vigil, they gazed upon the world in silent solemnity as humans made war, they judged the world as humans made lights to drive away the darkness, they watched as the world grew tired of war and united under one banner, but most of all, they watched as humans forgot their power and eventually all of Them turned to dust, all but one. It was the most ancient, the most powerful, and It waited for eons for the right person to take the legacy of myth and remind the humans just how the Forgotten Ones used to rule the cosmos with an iron grip, It watched and It waited for Eons as the world slowly ticked by one second at a time.
No one ever noticed their existence except a select few with higher sensitivity to that paranormal. Commonly referred to as 'Ghosts' or 'Phantoms' they would occasionally appear to the outside world, as technology became more prevalent in society these 'phantasms' eventually transferred into technology and became the mysterious viruses or bugs that would plague a computer terminal or a network server. When humans moved to the virtual realms, these entities followed humans and were coded into existence as spiritual type monsters in video games, but they were never eradicated from the games completely, when the greatest scientific feat of humanity came to be, they were watching as the first human gained powers more terrifying than anything that had ever been seen, he could obliterate a skyscraper with a couple of punches, a few days later he died due to his power running rampant within his body. The formula was perfected over time and the age of superhumans was at hand...
