Chapter 32 - Into the Darkness

Down into the Mariana Trench did Cormac and Melusine swim. Down into the Darkness did they go, hand-in-hand so as not to lose track of each other.

Somewhere down at the bottom lay Pacifica, but through the minds of the two redheads, images of monsters, creatures more alien than they had yet seen raced. Occasionally, some strange creatures with their own light source would swim up to the two, almost as if they were investigating who these strangers were.

A few times, Melusine asked if these strange sea creatures could lead her and Cormac down to Pacifica, but alas, it seemed these fish, cephalopods and what not had no interest whatsoever in doing so. They would merely approach, look at the two Children of the Storm and then swim away.

And what strange creatures they encountered! Grimpoteuthis, anglerfish, frilled sharks, goblin sharks, telescope octopus, dragonfish, snailfish! Everything that approached them, neither Cormac nor Melusine knew what to make of them. The dragonfish and goblin sharks showed at least a tad bit more interest as they would follow the two Children of the Deep for a short while before ultimately swimming off.

Looking over his shoulder at some moment, Cormac could have sworn he saw some humanoid silhouette following him and Melusine. Could it have been the figure who had saved them from Urefenkebos and her band back in the Arctic? Could that figure have been his father? He could only wish.

Continuing down into the darkness, a light suddenly began to appear in the distance. Could it have been Pacifica?
