Today is the first day I'm going to work in my new workplace, Unit 29 in Milennium Tower, Gurney. Before this, I could have only dreamed of ever entering a penthouse like this, one that I'd never be able to own, or live in. Unless I marry a high ranking and rich person. It was quite weird for me hoe an engineer could afford this place at a young age.
I have a neighbour in my hometown who is also and engineer, but he was only able to afford a two-storey house that's probably priced around 350,000 dollars. I heard about it when I talked to the mother of this neighbor while cleaning my mom's garden. I know the salary of an engineer could reach thousands of dollars but the Milennium Tower are mostly owned by foreigners since the price of one apartment could reach millions.
"Maybe this new boss of mine is doing some shady work outside. Oh my god, what if I get kidnapped and sold?" slowly I muttered these words as I cross my arms on my chest. Even though I know I'm not that pretty, or skinny, or fair skinned, but I'm still a woman. Fear envelops me thinking of this new boss of mine.
"Oi! What are you doing spacing out right there?" A small square pillow hit me right in the face cutting my daydream. I looked at the clock and it showed 6.15 am.
"Manman, why do you keep throwing your favourite pillow at me? What if I just throw it in the bin?" I quickly got up and grabbed the small red pillow and jokingly hovers it above the trash can.
Li Manfei who was putting on makeup to get ready for work swiftly snatched the pillow from my hands. And then continued on with her makeup.
"What are you looking at? Go and get ready now or you'll be late to Mr F's penthouse." Li Manfei yelled my way while still focusing on her makeup.
"I'm going, I'm going." I said shortly and grabbed the towel to go shower. As soon as I finished showering, I headed to the closet and start choosing something to wear.
"What are you going to wear today? Why don't you wear something simple or untidy? What if your guess about him were right? What if he was a human trafficker? So if you dress simply, he'd probably thought you're ugly and just ignore you, no?" my inside voice strikes again.
"Fu Weina! You're not ready yet? What's wrong with you? Why do you keep spacing out?" Li Manfei again yelled at me. Well, I could guess she thinks this is weird. I don't usually daydream like this.
"Yeah, I'm almost ready." I said while quickly taking out a short sleeved black shirt and jean. Then I out on some sunscreens and headed out.
"Should we have breakfast together before work? It's still early." Li Manfei offered. I looked at the watch on my wrist. It's exactly at 7 am. Some toast and eggs would eggs would be perfect right now.
""Okay, one minute. Let me get the salmon and curry we made last night that's gonna be my lifesaver later." I grabbed the lunch boxes containing the dishes we made last night from the kitchen counter. I'll have to re-heat this a few times to make sure it doesn't go bad by the time my boss comes home from work.
"Hmm, luckily you remember. Otherwise you'll have to buy some food from outside." said Li Manfei that made us look at each other.
"Good, Manman. You've gave me an idea. While I'm int he process of learning how to cook, I'll just buy some food from outside to be his dinner." I said happily. Now I don't have to tell Li Manfei t cook every night just for my boss.
"yeah right Weiwei. But if you keep doing that, you'll be broke in no time. Even if you got a 2000 dollars salary, it wouldn't be enough." What Li Manfei just said was right too. But this is gonna be a temporary solution only. At least, until I can make a few dishes without breaking out in cold sweat in the kitchen.
"What else are you thinking about? Let's go." she said and hurriedly opened the door and got out.
"Hey, wait for me." I ran a little outside to catch up with her. Then I saw Li Manfei standing in front of the elevator shaking her head.
