Chapter 5 - Evolving Skills

'Spirit sense'

As soon as he thought that, he felt a strange feeling envelop him. Opening his eyes, he was immediately stunned. He could finally see!

Previously, he was pretty much sensing things instead of seeing, so although he could see anything in a certain radius, he couldn't he beyond the limits of his mana sense. This made it so that even if there was anything close to him, as long as it wasn't in the range of his mana sense, he wouldn't know it was there at all. There were also strange blue lines, following the wind. He assumed this was mana, based on how the mana within his body was reacting.

Besides that though, he could actually see things! Looking up, he could see the starry night sky, just like the one in his past life. Except the were two moons. And the moons were purple. And all the stars were also purple. He sighed, glancing around the area.

He hadn't fully realized that he was in a different world until now. Everything was so.... different.

Pushing the thought out of his mind, he brightened up. New world, new adventures! His parents were waiting for him! He couldn't just stand here moping. He had to find a way back. He WOULD find a way back. No matter what.

His resolve strengthened, he continued looking around. he could see the wall in the distance, still glowing in the darkness. Looking down, he could see a small, ordinary rock.

'Is that me?'

As he turned off Spirit Sense, he could feel himself sucked back into his body, before a hollow feeling overcame him. He had lost his vision again. It was a good thing the skill retained its original use from before it leveled up, or he wouldn't be able to see anything as a rock. Instead, he would have had to use the skill, before going back into his body to move. He would have to do that many times, just so he knew where he was going.

'Moving on, he thought, deciding to try his new skill next.

'Wind Blade'

Suddenly, he heard a loud whooshing sound, before he saw a small ball of wind appear in his hand. He could see it spinning, though it didn't really look like a blade. Just as he wondered how to use it, an image suddenly appeared in his mind. It depicted a middle-aged man, standing on a mountain. His long robe flapped in the wind, making him look like a deity that descended from the heavens. Eventually, a giant dark cloud appeared in the sky. The cloud was full of lightning, making ominous cracking sounds from within. Suddenly, a small ball of wind appeared in his hand. Rapidly, it rotated in place before the man spun his hands, surrounding it with mana and it split into countless parts. Each part of the ball expanded, rapidly forming many swords made of wind. Immediately, all the swords were sent flying towards the cloud. After breaking the cloud apart, the lightning and clouds dissipated in the air.

'Wow.'

That was the only thought he could muster. The scene was so grand it left him speechless.

Eventually, he snapped out of it, finding out a viable method to use the skill. Using his mana to surround the ball, he quickly felt the wind moving to his will. A sudden lapse in concentration caused him to lose control over the wind before it dispersed into the air.

'This is going to be a lot harder than I thought it would be,' he muttered.

Pushing it aside, he decided to work on his other skill instead, Basic Mind Magic. He wouldn't be able to sense his mana that well with the other two, so this was the opportune moment to test out pure mana, the other skill he had evolved.

Using the skill, he saw another image. This time, it was a small child, looking youthful and naive. He waved his hands, causing him to fly into the air. Another stormcloud came, looking even darker than the one in the previous scene. The cloud unleashed a burst of lightning at the child. Suddenly, a purple barrier appeared around the child, protecting it. The child waved his hands once more before the lightning attacked again. This time though, it hit a nearby field, lighting it aflame. The cloud attacked many more times, but the child just needed to wave his hands, and the cloud would hit somewhere else, always missing him by an inch. Eventually, the cloud ran out of energy, dispersing into the air.

Once again, Roland was stunned, before he quickly regained his composure.

This time, he had two new abilities besides telekinesis. From what he saw, he could create a barrier with mana, and he could create some sort of illusion. The barrier was probably made of a kind of psychic or mind energy from the color of it and how it was used. On top of that, the illusions could render others unable to know where he was.

He had tested the barrier(. After all, he has nobody to use the illusion on), and although it worked, the barrier only flickered weakly for a few seconds before fragmenting into tiny pieces.

It would take a lot more leveling up before he could actually use it to defend himself.

Of course, he also felt the effects of the level ten mana manipulation during this. Without it, he wouldn't be able to form the barrier at all. Not only that, he could feel his mana flowing much more smoothly when he executed the skills. The effect would probably be much greater when it evolved, too.

Eventually, he decided to continue on his journey while he practiced the other two skills. It would take a while, but he had plenty of time.

Rolling into the distance, he started to level up Wind Blade and Basic Mind Magic.

This was the result after another day. During that time, mana manipulation had evolved, but he hadn't managed to level it up yet. After a day of traveling, he looked at the area around him. The terrain had become more hilly the longer he headed in this direction. What had once been a flat, barren plain had become large series of ups and downs. He could now see a large mountain range in the distance, looming over the hills like an immovable wall.

He estimated he would be there in about two more days, though it might be a bit faster if he managed to level up Basic Mind Magic. Speeding up his pace, he hoped he would get there soon. He was starting to get tired of seeing the vast but empty fields he went by.

With the arrival of day two, Roland found himself at the base of the mountains. The path up was steep and curvy, disappearing before leading to a cave near the center of the mountain.

Normally, it would be quite dangerous, but Roland took the path as a good sign. There was definitely some sort of path or road to a settlement on the other side of the mountains.

Flying up and bypassing the road, he flew directly into the cave after a few minutes of flying. He could see a few extinguished torches placed in alcoves dug into the wall. The cave was old and dusty, cobwebs lining the smooth, rocky wall and faint footsteps visible in the dust. Rolling up to the prints on the ground, Roland quickly noticed why he saw those. It was likely that the path was rarely used (he could see why) and the ground was covered in dust. The dust outside the cave had likely been blown away by the wind, only leaving the ones in the long, winding cave. If anyone walked in here, their footsteps would leave prints whenever they walked in the dust, leading to the tracks he saw in the cave. He wasn't able to tell how long ago the person was here, but it was definitely a good sign.

Not knowing how long he wandered in the cave, Roland turned a corner, only to find a large stone door blocking the way. It was an old, decrepit construction, but even after an unknown period of time, it was still standing.

'How do I get past this?' he wondered while looking around. Eventually, his gaze caught the footprints on the ground, following them to a certain part of the wall. Flying over, Roland quickly scanned the wall using his Spirit Sense. Soon, he noticed something, flying over to the top of the wall. Noticing the small bump on the normally smooth wall, he knew he had found something.

Throwing himself at the wall, he heard a resounding click echo in the cave before the door slowly swung open.

Making a long, drawn-out screeching sound, it fully opened, allowing Roland to see the other side.

'Wow.'
