Alex carried the bag that contained her clothes and let Alek hands be free. He also did this when he was with his boyfriend. He was the carrier of the group. Alek still complained when he carried her stuff for her but, that is what he wanted so, he would just continue to carry the book. Avoiding Alek's hands in an attempt to get back her stuff.
As always, Alek tried to get back her bag but Alec avoided her hands swiftly, and she gave up. He was too tall to begin with, and she was no match for his height. When they met, she was taller than him, but now, he was like a mountain next to her.
"So are you going to stay with us only for tonight?" Alex asked Alek.
"I think so. My aunt said that she came for me. To spend some time with me." Alek slightly twisted the truth.
"Oh." Alex said. He kind of missed Alek by his side, chatting nonsense with him. They had not met her since the school closed. Their schedule didn't match.
"I've missed this." Alek mumbled, too low for her friend to hear. This past day and today had been energy-consuming. She didn't know if she would be surprised anymore when someone told her that the sky was a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci.
They didn't talk from there until they reached the house. The sky was a beautiful colour of twilight before they entered the house after admiring it from on top of the hill. Alex's house was located close to the top of the hill. It was opposite Alek's house. Since they were on the top of the hill nothing was blocking the view.
They got into the house and, Vicki greeted the best friends. "The cake is ready and, I want you to taste it," Vicki told them happily. "Or will you eat them after supper?"
"I want to try it now." Alex told his mother.
"I wasn't asking you, son. I was asking Alek." Vicki told her son firmly. "Besides, I've already changed my mind. We are going to eat the cake AFTER supper." Vicki told him and walked away.
Alek laughed at how Vicki treated her and her son differently. And she was also laughing at how Alec looked unhappy hearing that. He was a big fan of sweets like Alek and Mel and, this was like torture for him.
Alex was stumping his feet as he went up the stairs to his room, followed by Alek. He placed the bag on the foot of the bed and sat on the bed, thinking. How can he make his mother give him the cake before supper?
"I don't think any of your plan is going to work." Alek told him as she unpacked her stuff from the bag.
He was caught off-guard. Alek wasn't even looking at him when she said that. It was like she knew what he was thinking.
Before he could reply to her comment, Alek spoke again. "You are open book. Even Mel would have said the same thing without even needing to try." She was still unpacking.
Alex opened his mouth to speak but shut it in a second. He forgot what he was going to say.
Alek smiled, knowing what exactly her best friend did. She felt smart for knowing. But what she didn't know was that she was an open book too. "Can I go to shower?" Alek asked after she finished removed the ones she needed after bath.
"Sure. You know where it is, right?" Alec asked as Alek got away from the room with the clothes while nodding.
He soon was alone in the room and, then he remembered what he was going to say to Alek a few minutes before. He was going to say how she could be the one to tell him. She was the same as him but, she didn't seem to notice that. Also, Melvin was an open book. One of the reasons why they don't have many friends is because of their attitude. They always showed what they were thinking and felt. So when someone is telling them a boring story, it would show on their face that it's boring.
He felt a little lonely in his room so, he decided to help his mother and went downstairs.
"What are you doing in here?" Vicki asked her son, who was in the kitchen, with suspicion. He usually didn't help with cooking because he was terrible. Any other things than cooking, Alex was good with it but cooking... The things he made were not edible.
"I came here to help." He told his mother as he rolled up sleeves.
"You want me to give you the cake." Vicki said. She knew how much her son loved sweets.
Alec froze for a moment before he continued to roll up. Half of what she said was true. He wanted to take a sneaky bite of the cake in the fridge. And the only way to do that was to do something in the kitchen and sneak into the fridge. But, he also was lonely in his room without Alek so, he decided to ease the feeling by staying with his mother.
"I knew it." Vicki sighed as she cut the tomato. "Well, help me then, I might think about the cake."
"Really?" Alec's eyes shone brightly as he heard from Vicki.
"Yes, really. But I'm just considering it." She may change her mind after seeing how he is going to help. "Now come and start peeling off the potatoes."She handed the peeler to her son and, he grabbed it with excitement.
--------
Alek occasionally heard someone shouting from the outside of the shower and, she had asked back but, no one answered. She shrugged her shoulders and continued to bathe.
She came out from the shower, feeling refreshed and went to Alec's room to pack her dirty laundry. But when she opened the door, the room was dark, and Alec was not there. Then she heard another shouting from downstairs and realised he must be with his mother. She giggled as she heard Vicki shouting to her son about how to pumpkins.
Alek went to the kitchen as she rubbed the towel she brought on her wet hair. "How was the shower, sweetie?" Vicki asked.
"It was heavenly." Alek smiled at her.
"Great." Vicki also smiled before she again shouted to Alex for not removing the seeds from the pumpkin. "Anyway, where do you want to sleep? I wish we had a guest room." Vicki sighed as she washed the chopping board.
"I'll sleep in Alex's room with him." Alek told her as she sat down at the counter, watching her best friend doing his best to remove the seeds.
"Honey, you needn't have to do that! Alec's bed is small for two people to sleep." She told Alek and placed a pot on the stove. "You know what? Alec will sleep on the sofa while you take his room."
"Mum!" Alec got up from starting to cut the pumpkin. Even though he didn't mind sleeping on the sofa for Alek, he still wanted to be asked if he was okay with that.
"Go back to cutting." Vicki told her son and, he obeyed her.
"I wouldn't mind sleeping with Alex for the night." Alek didn't see Alex as a man or a boy. She saw him as a best friend and sometimes forgot that he was a boy.
"But it's small..." She told the girl at the counter.
"We used to sleep like that when we were little." Alek took away the knife from her best friend and chopped the pumpkin from the counter. He almost cut off his finger.
"But that was when you two were little, right? You both have grown now."
"The bed might be small but, we can fit still. If we feel uncomfortable, I will just push Alex off the bed." Alek told them smilingly. They knew she was telling the truth. She had pushed Alex off of his bed when she came for a sleepover and, the parents would often find their son sleeping on the sofa in the morning.
"I'm taking the left." Alek told Alec without giving him a chance to negotiate.
"Fine!" Alex spoke through his teeth. He knew if he said no, he wouldn't see tomorrow. Alek smiled hearing that and continued to watch while they cooked. The last time she came for a sleepover, she had tried to help with the cooking. But, she was told she shouldn't be helping them since she was a guest.
The supper went well with, the three of them enjoyed the food they made. Alek and Vicki laughed at Alex for not being able to cut the pumpkin the exact sizes.
They were full by the supper and, no one could eat the cake Vicki made. Their stomachs were so full and, Alex could feel the food in his throat, not being able to fit in his stomach. So they decided to eat the cake as breakfast.
The Alecs washed and cleaned after eating and brushed their teeth. Alek was tired and, her eyelids were being pulled to each other like a north magnet and south magnet. Alec saw how Alek was exhausted and carried her to his room when they were done.
They have already said good night to Vicki so, they needn't have to go back to the room to say it again.
Alex carefully placed Alek on the left side of the bed and placed her under the sheets. He got in after he checked all the windows and doors were locked. He cradled Alek in his body and fell asleep like that.
