Chereads / Master Of The Yin Yang / Chapter 2 - Life

Chapter 2 - Life

On the planet, Nova 1c the citizens of the country, Nami, live among the gifted and ungifted people. In modern times most people don't trust or like the idea of enhanced people living among them. The systems of power allow them similar laws since they are still citizens of Nami. However, they are given strict rules essentially to their abilities, for example, they are only to use them for military use. Another law they put on them was that they must not interfere with normal civilian lives. The bulk of enhanced people did not agree with this and now we are in a civil rights war. This war is not a real war, it's like a fight for equal rights, and as if now it's not going anywhere.

The most dangerous city to be in right now is the city of Vanity and the reason being is that the fight is most active there. On almost every street there was either a group of five to ten enhanced people protesting that they should be able to express their abilities freely and able to interact with people who aren't enhanced. An example is they cannot use their abilities to save someone from danger. But the laws aren't what made them tick, the fact that they feel unwanted made some sad, distant, and even worse, angry. There are wanted enhanced people prisons made uniquely for them. But for now, civil rights have now begun.

[Goshi's Narration (Main Character)]

Waking up to my little brother spewing blood from his mouth is not what I would call a good morning. I called the medical center and had him rushed to the hospital and followed behind him. Our mother wasn't much help with her being a grade-A alcoholic, I have to work, go to school, and watch over my brother. All she would say is that she was thankful and she wouldn't know what to do without me. When I found out my brother caught the disease known as "Elpamy" I broke down. He is only 11 years old and I, his 17-year-old brother is breaking down before him. The sad thing is the cure for this is expensive and nor does my mother have the funds for it. We don't even have life insurance to cover the cost as well, so we come close to no plan to help him.

"Am I going to die Goshi?" My brother asked laying down on the hospital bed. I would reply, "No, I will not let you Amoi, never." I said this while juggling my emotions in the hospital room. Amoi was a smart kid and he knew better so he knew he was going to die. I attempted to handle the stress of work, school, and my brother but it's all too much for me to handle alone. Even if I could let the city take him they wouldn't take an enhanced citizen in anyways. My only hope was to get him the cure and pay off his debt. Amoi was my only normal brother, I had another brother and a father but my brother is a criminal on the run and my father is deceased. I left him at the hospital for better care and went to clear my head.

Walking down the street I looked at my gold ring on my left-hand middle finger and thought, "Maybe my ability can be resourceful in the military, and that way I can pay off his bills." I then thought realistically and realized that he could be dead by the time I have the money. I walked into an alley out of plain view and used my rank 2 ability and forced the ladder to my apartment down and climbed into my window. I was wearing nothing but a blue short sleeve shirt, dark blue board shorts, that's what I wore to bed and with the time I had, I couldn't get dressed in time. I would proceed to get dressed and my mother walked by and said, "Did you see the news, apparently your big brother was caught and is going to be put down." My eyes shot open as I pulled my pants up and put on another shirt, I walked to the television, and what she said was true.

I walked back to my room and grabbed my bag and walked to school. As I slowly made my way to school I see protestor after protestors and some even began rioting. I had to rush to school to not get caught in the aftermath. In between that and getting to school, I was pushed around by the so-called normal citizens. But in the end, I had finally made it to school. The school was kind of the safe haven for the most part, some enhanced students are like rank three and four so they think they are better than everyone else. I personally didn't care for them because if someone tried to cause harm to me in any way I would defend myself.

While walking down the halls, I experienced a whole other level of pain, I say this because we are given neck braces that give us a jolt if we step out of line. This is the other part than it being a safe haven for us. I remember when I was in middle school, I had to wear braces on my neck, ankles, wrist, upper arm, upper thigh, and it was terrible. The worst part is that someone else had to put them onto us so we had no privacy while in school. I just can't wait until I graduate and leave this damn place and find a new life.

The lunchroom had a god-awful stench and it did not have any janitors cleaning it because no one wanted to help the enhanced/normal school out. I hate how we have to live nowadays, we don't even live in that imaginary high-tech future that people predicted, we live in a rather old infrastructure but it's not that old in a way. I hated the system of power that oversees us and does nothing about it. I hated a lot of things but that was just something I hated conveniently.

During breakfast, there were about three fights and ten other disputes over who said what and who touched who. My way of staying in the clear is to not come into contact with anyone who causes trouble. That way my high school life can be semi-decent and that way I can focus on the important things. After I had finished a biscuit and some milk I initially headed to my first class of the day. As I walked down the hall I received a call from the hospital and they said that the cure worked for Amoi and they wanted to discuss the funding portion but I evaded it and hung up.

As I enter my class door the intercom came on and the principal says, "School is canceled for today due to some technical difficulties. Please see yourself to the exit." I sighed and walked back to the entrance and went back to the hospital to see my brother.

When I finally got to the hospital the receptionist came to me and told me that the cure had some side effects and my brother had at least one week of life left. Sadness filled my body and I became numb before tears ran past my cheek. I started hyperventilating and rushed to my brother's room and when I walked in he was crying. I stood at the door with no option but to comfort him and make him feel safe. The doctor came in and tried to gesture to me to pay for the cure used on him. I waved my hand and forced the door closed and stayed in the room.

From the outside, I could hear the people calling in the ones who are responsible for us, the E.T.U. That stood for Enhanced Termination Unit and they didn't terminate you if it's something as simple as slamming a door but if I had harmed anyone, I would pay for it.

Sometime later the unit commander came into the room by himself and he said, "Alright, let's go, both of you." I stood in front of Amoi's bed and said, "My brother is not going anywhere, I will gladly go but he is off the table." He pulled a gun out and aimed it at me and he said, "Did I say I was asking?" I didn't move an inch and stood my ground and said, "You won't do it, you know how much controversy this will bring." He shot the floor and that time I flinched before he called his men in and forced us to their facility. I attempted to resist but it was no hope, they put neck braces on us and shocked me because I was resisting.

Hours later I was behind bars with volts of electricity running through them. Was chained to a giant metal box within the cell and they removed my shirt and put another brace covering my spine, restricting my movements. The man who kidnapped us came to my cell and said, "Hello prisoner #1476 my name is Sgt. Homing you violated laws in sections two and three which include, using enhanced abilities without reason, and interfering with normal citizen affairs." I nudged my legs and said, "Where's my brother?" He walked closer and said with an utmost unpleasant tone, "He's dead." My body loosened up and I felt like I was in some sort of nightmare. My brother was dead and I couldn't do anything about it, they prevented me from helping him.

I closed my eyes while crying my heart out and something flashed across the facility and it was moving so quickly it was like light spitting across a small room. My eyes were forced shut and I saw a tree but it wasn't just any tree, it was the tree of life. This tree sat at 1400 feet tall and 500 feet wide. I was struggling to see and I finally forced my eyes open and my eyes plus my mouth filled with light and the bright spark entered my body and I drifted out from exhaustion.
