Jasmine's POV
My bedside alarm rang, waking me up from my slumber.
I stood up from the bed and went to bathroom but the door was locked from the inside.
"Megan will you be fast please! It's my first day at work today and I can not afford to be late!" I yelled.
"I'm sorry Jas but doctor Ryan just called to tell me we will be having a surgery scheduled for this morning and I had to quickly start getting ready" she said from the bathroom.
"Just be fast" I replied and went to sit down on the couch in the sitting room.
Minutes later, Megan came out of the bathroom.
"Took you long enough" I said as I entered the bathroom.
I quickly brushed, bathed and styled my hair.
I went to my room and wore a white top with a blue jean, then I wore my black heals and took my bag.
I got to the dinning room and Megan was already there.
We are already getting late so we just made bread and tea.
"I still have some minutes before am late for work so let's go together, I'll drop you off at your workplace first" Megan said.
"Thanks Meg" I said as I followed her out of the house.
Megan has a car, the private hospital she's working at gave her a car when she finished her first year of residency.
She drove me to the National hospital and few minutes later, we were there.
"Have a great day Jas" Megan said.
"Thanks Meg, see you later" I said and quickly ran into the hospital.
I bumped into a man at the door and my handbag fell down and all the contents scattered on the floor.
"Oh gosh, I am getting late" I said as I bent down to pick my things back into my bag.
"Hey...." The man was about to say something but I stood up and ran inside the hospital.
The man face looked kinda familiar but I couldn't waste anymore time with him, I can't afford to be late on my first day.
I got to the counter at the reception and the receptionist was speaking with a lady nurse.
"Good morning" I said to the receptionist. "My name is Jasmine Wright and I just got employed here, this is my first day here"
"You are the new doctor that was employed?" The nurse asked and I nodded.
"You are really lucky, this hospital is the hardest place to get a job in, I guess you must be talented for you to have been chosen, anyway my name is Nurse Chloe, I hope we can get along" she said as she brought out her hand for a handshake.
Seems she's really a talkative.
I shook her hand and then looked at receptionist.
"Where am I supposed to go?" I asked.
"You'll have to go to the Director's office, he will tell you all you need to know" the receptionist responded.
"Where is the Director's office?"
"Just take the elevator to the 5th floor" Nurse Chloe said.
"Thanks"
I went to the elevator to the fifth floor and got to the Director's office.
"Good morning Sir" I greeted as I entered the office.
"Miss Jasmine Wright?" He asked
"Yes Sir"
"The message we sent you was that you should be here by 9am but you are obviously late" he said.
"I am sorry Sir, it was traffic and I'm not really that late, it's just 2 minutes past 9" I said.
"Whether it's just a second past 9, you are late Miss Jasmine. Being a doctor means we have to be punctual in our all doings, we are like the angels in the society and we can't afford to make the mistakes that everyone makes."
"I am sorry Sir" I apologized.
"Anyway, you are new here, you'll learn all the rules and regulations as time goes on, for now find Doctor Alex, I assigned you to his surgery team as his surgical assistant so you are his responsibility."
"Surgical assistant? I thought I was going to get my own surgery team" I said and he laughed.
"You aren't even allowed to perform a surgery on your own let alone having your own surgery team. This is a National hospital Miss Jasmine, one of the best in the world and you are just a junior doctor here, we can not allow you to perform surgery on your own until we are absolutely sure you are capable of doing so. The people that handles the surgeries here are the senior doctors, the junior doctors are just to help them out and learn from them."
"When will I be able to perform a surgery on my own then?" I asked.
"When the Senior doctor in charge of you says you are ready which in your case, it's Doctor Alex, you are lucky that he's the one training you, there are many people that wishes to be in your shoes right now but I don't know why he specifically asked for you" the Director said.
"Why should I feel lucky that am in Doctor Alex's team?"
"It's obvious you don't know the Alex am talking about. Everyone in the medical field knows him Jasmine, the Senior doctor in charge of you is Doctor Alexander Sanchez" the Director said and I gasped.
He is like a legend in the medical world, some people do call him the god of surgery cause he has done lots of complicated surgeries but has never had a failed operation.
He once came to my school while I was still a student to lecture us and that was how I saw him for the first time.
I can not believe he is going to be my mentor and a I am in his surgery team.
And then a memory hit my brain with a bang.
The man I bumped into in front of the hospital, he's Alexander Sanchez.
Why didn't I recognize him immediately! And I didn't even apologise for bumping on him, he must see me as a rude girl now.
"I guess you are really surprised seeing that you've been silent all this while" the Director said bringing me back to reality.
"I am sorry"
"Meet Doctor Alex right away, his office is in the third floor" the director said.
I bowed a little and then left the office.
Oh Jasmine, what have you done, first day at work you bumped into the senior doctor in charge of you and you did not even apologise.
I just hope Doctor Alex is not the type that keep grudges.
Alex's POV
"Any important surgery today?" I asked Susan and Andrew.
"No doctor, you don't have any surgeries for today" Andrew replied.
"And how is the brain tumour patient we operated on yesterday?"
"He's recovering fine, though he's still unconscious but there are no complications" Susan said.
"Great, I have a Seminar to attend today but I'll check on him before going, just to make sure" I said and Susan nodded.
There was sudden a knock on the door.
"Come in" I said
Moments later the door opened and a lady came in.
"Oh, aren't you the lady that bumped into me in front of the hospital today?" I asked and she just bent her head.
"I am really sorry about that Doctor, I had no idea that you were Doctor Alexander Sanchez" she said.
"So I guess it depends on how important a person is then you decide if you should apologise or not, when you thought I was a nobody, you didn't apologise but when you found out that am Alexander Sanchez, you came to apologise."
"No Sir, I really would've apologise back then but I was in so much hurry cause I didn't want to be late for work" she said.
"Oh so you work here, I've never seen you around, are you one of the cleaners or maybe nurses though I don't think you are qualified to be a nurse."
"I'm a doctor sir, a junior resident and I just started working here today, my name is Jasmine Wright" she said and I was surprised.
"What! You are Jasmine Wright?"
"Yes Sir, I went to meet the director this morning and he said I should come meet you that am in your surgery team and you are supposed to be in charge of me."
"Andrew!" I yelled
"Yes doctor" he said as he quickly came to my side.
"Get Doctor Tony here immediately" I said and he quickly run out.
I can't believe this is the lady Tony was singing praises about yesterday.
Moments later Tony came in.
"What's wrong Alex, I was attending to a patient" he said as he came in.
"Look who's here, your brilliant Jasmine Wright" I said and he turned to look at Jasmine.
"Oh Miss Jasmine, you are welcome to the National hospital and permit me to say, you were amazing during your interview" he said as he shook her hand.
"Are you kidding me Tony, she looks nothing like a doctor."
"And why do you say that, she looks like a competent doctor to me" Tony said.
"She doesn't have the Doctors etiquette, she bumped into someone without apologising and she was being late on her first day, doctors are supposed to be very punctual."
"Those are just little mistakes" he said.
"Well no mistakes are allowed in my team" I said.
"I'm sorry Doctor, I promise it won't repeat itself again" Jasmine said.
"Well I sure hope so, cause if you make any mistakes, you are leaving my team, we deal with life Jasmine, no mistakes are tolerated here."
"Just fill her up with the rules and give her some days am sure she'll fit in properly and if you think am lying about her being smart, you can test her yourself, I'll take my leave now, I still have some patient to attend to" Tony said and left the office.
"What is aneurysm?" I asked.
"An abnormal blood-filled swelling of an artery or vein, resulting from a localized weakness in the wall of the vessel" she replied quickly.
"And how do you treat a patient with aneurysm in the brain?"
"It depends, if the artery or vain affected is not that swollen then we can go for Biopsy but if it is then we perform craniotomy" she replied and I sighed.
She does seem to be intelligent.
"Susan" I called and she walked up to me.
"Take her to the matron to get her coat and show her where her locker is."
"Yes doctor" Susan said and they turned to leave.
"Jasmine" I called and she turned back.
"You might have been the best student in your University days but this is the National hospital and you are just a junior doctor here, you aren't allowed to perform surgery on your own for now, the only surgery you are allowed to take part in is the one am performing."
"But what if there's an emergency doctor?" She asked.
"Then call me"
"Okay" she bowed a little and left with Susan.
I wore my doctor's coat and went off to check on the brain tumour patient.
After that I'll be leaving the hospital, I have a seminar to attend.
