From out of nowhere came a horrific crash and the plane soon came falling down into a wee mere on a cutoff highland. The plane had not come down gracefully being torn apart and thus Patrick found himself far from the mere.
Having landed in a tree, Patrick awoke looking upon highland where he saw zebras grazing. Getting down from the trees, he approached them and found them to be the Hagerman horse, a species of zebra... That had been native to North America in prehistoric times. They were fifty inches tall at the shoulder and relatively stocky with a straight shoulder, a thick neck and a short, narrow donkey-like skull.
This was very strange. Stranger still when a Smilodon appeared on the scene and slew one of the horses. The ambush had caused the herd to flee and nearly trample Patrick. Once the herd had gone, he could only stare at the great cat as it growled at him, preparing to defend its bag. Patrick could see nothing else to do but leave the Smilodon to its food and so he did leave.
He couldn't make sense of it. Hagerman horse and Smilodon, both prehistoric animals that been native to the Americas in modern Africa! Stranger still, the Hagerman horse was native to grasslands and floodplains just as the Smilodon was native to the grassy plains. What were they doing in an area of high land? It didn't make any sense. The more he thought this over the more one thing came to his mind.
"Julie!" he exclaimed aloud to himself.
His exclamation caused a startled sound to alert Patrick to the presence of a Megatherium. A prehistoric creature native to the woodlands and grasslands of South America in an African highland... The paleontology department would never believe him.
Patrick gave a sigh. At this point the most he had seen were Hagerman horse, Smilodon and Megatherium: two herbivorous species and one carnivorous. Things were looking favorable for him and Julie. He only hoped she was unharmed!
A new noise then came to Patrick's ears. Not the noise of animals and the language of people. Looking up into the trees, he wondered if they could have been coming from above. That was German, he was sure of it!
"Wer bist du, ruddy mann?"
Patrick turned and saw a Homo erectus standing before him. A Homo erectus speaking modern German... After the Hagerman horse, the Smilodon and the Megatherium in a highland of modern Africa this didn't even shock him in the least.
"I am Patrick Malone, I work for Professor Enrico Bulwer of the Royal Ontario Museum." Patrick then realized if the Homo erectus spoke German then he'd have no idea what Patrick was saying.
"Professor?" asked the Homo erectus. The ape-man grabbed Patrick by the arm and started to pull him in a western direction. "Kommen sie, Herr Professor!"
"Hold it, friend!" exclaimed Patrick, putting his foot down firmly. "I am not Professor Bulwer, I am his assistant Patrick Malone and I am not going anywhere until I have found Julie!"
"Kommandant Carolingian hat verlangt dass alle professoren zu ihm gebracht warden." The ape-man held aloft a club and Patrick could only glare.
"Friend, first chance I get I'm going to throw you to a Smilodon."
