Chapter 36 - Big dumb dragon

"Why did you have to do that?

You keep attacking people who just want to help themselves and do nothing more. Are you that scared?" he asked with anger clearly entrenched in his voice however the person he was talking to just kept staring straight ahead into space without paying him any attention.

That didn't discourage Ilde from expressing his displeasure with the situation at hand. At first he had sent his people to kill Hilde which he deliberately kept from him because he knew Ilde wouldn't agree with him. And now he blocked Ilde powers so that even if he knew she was being attacked he wouldn't be able to do anything. He couldn't understand the reason for the recent changes in his father's attitude. His father had promised to leave Yjulv's side and actually did, and for all this while even when his heart bled he still felt satisfied that his father was finally living a decent life.

Until recently when a strange woman came to inform him that the Oceanides had been trying to escape. He couldn't really understand now if his father was even under any influence or this is what he really wanted to do.

He couldn't calm down even though this man in front of him was his father or the person that he had tried to protect when he turned his back on his destiny.

Yet the middle-aged man seem indifferent as if he was expecting this outburst from an angry son.

Ilde squinted his eyes and for a moment the feeling of hurt reflected on his face. Bottling his anger and pain up hasn't helped him even till this moment.

"When I gave up on those who believed in me and derailed from my fate, it wasn't to save this type of person. Why aren't you being yourself?" he asked this time with a quiet voice.

His father looked up at him and even with the tension that was starting to build he still maintained his composure.

"This is who I am-" he replied and was about to go on before he got cut off by Ilde

"No. This isn't who you are, you are just acting this way because of one big dumb dragon whose existence even seems false. Because when I searched for it ten years ago I couldn't find it even when I was sure it was going to be there"

His father let out a low deep chuckle before saying "The existence you need proof of, are you strong and brave enough to see it?" he stopped to read the reaction on Ilde's face before taking his steps closer to him.

"If you woke up the next day to discover the whole world you haven't even been in some parts of it is in ruins would it be enough for you to believe it? Do not think I don't know what I'm doing. This is for both you and me" he said and placed his right hand on Ilde's shoulder.

"That is why we must kill those escapees if we're to have a peaceful life" he said looking straight at him. Ilde raised his gaze to meet his father's own which was closely observing him with expectation.

However this expectation quickly disappeared as he saw the look on Ilde's face.

"Peaceful?" he asked in a chilly and menacing voice.

His father failed to keep the unperturbed composure he had been in since their conversation started. Even though he was his son he knew that there was a limit to how he could act around him. He had known this since the first time they met.

Ilde had been anything that could be used to describe fury which was above anger when he first discovered his father's true identity many years ago. However as time passed by his anger was slowly changing to disappointment when he discovered that the man he had always wanted to meet badly was the person who he was meant to avoid and because he was his son the disappointment was soon replaced with nothing but...'pity?'.

But now that pitiful gaze had turned to something more scary and endangering. The older man couldn't help but flinch, even though this was his son he was still the same person who was mentioned in the prophecies.

Whose coming was anticipated even before his grandfather's birth.

Ilde's voice soon jolted him from his trance as he moved closer to him.

"All the while I was with you did you ever even stop to think or ask me if my life was peaceful?" he asked the man who had already started to wonder which force was still stopping him from shaking or falling down.

"ANSWER ME!!" he shouted making the man take a step backwards while still holding his gaze.

Ilde chuckled lightly at his father's reaction before he continued.

"Ever since I dropped the cause for which I was born my heart felt like it was being ripped apart each passing second.

Every day was tortuous for me, I could only breath in agony but I was satisfied.

To me it was a better alternative to destroying you. Even when it meant that..... I-I...had to destroy myself" he said breathing hard and his father looked like he was about to cry.

Not because of the words he had said but the idea of the words that would end this conversation.

"And you know it was bearable if I was the price that had to be paid for you to be normal. I was totally okay with it, but it seemed like after all this years I still failed to understand you till this very moment. What you need is something that I can't afford to let you have, something I must stop you from getting not what I could give to you. It might be too late but I've finally discovered it. I wasn't born to be your son" he said and with that turned back and headed for the door while trying to hold in the tears that were threatening to burst out any moment.

His father however couldn't hold back anymore. His vision was blurred with tears as he watched his son leaving. He had been the most relaxed since their talk started but now it seemed their positions had been switched with Ilde trying his best to feel unaffected and he just letting loose.

"S-son" he called in what sounded like more of a whisper before falling on the ground. Someone came and kneeled beside him almost immediately.

"You can't, you can't fall now. You can't waver, Ilde might not realize it now but everything you've done was solely for him" a voice whispered close to him.

He looked tired and exhausted as he replied almost shouting

"What's the point? He hates me now!! He doesn't want to be my son!!!"

He was crying loudly now that the guards who stood by the door couldn't help but listen to their human instincts which told them to turn to look at him.

"Still your decisions were for his sake, everything. You can't bear to see him disappear can you?" the voice said again.

"Yes, yes anything can happen apart from that. I don't want that. That is what I don't want" he kept repeating and those who stood at the door couldn't help but wonder why he sounded like he was talking with someone when he was alone.
