Chapter 10 - A Place You Will Never Be

" Who the hell are you?!" James' voice filled the air of the police station as he held Michael by the collar. A police officer stopped him by removing his hands on the latter while patting his back. "Let it go, Sir; control your temper." Said the police officer. James, even with his eyes filled with confusion and anger, let Michael go. Michael shrugged and gave a smirk while looking at James. "I told you, she is my girlfriend," Michael said in a proud voice, looking at James for a second and then to the police officer who is questioning him. "Ex-boyfriend, you must've hit your head hard to forget about that" A cool but stern voice appeared in the back and made everyone look for it. The handsome in denim pulled out a chair and gave his business card to the police officer interrogating Michael. "I am Kyle Esteves, Angel's Friend" Even the police officers found it amazing when both Michael and James repeated the last word that this man /,.cm . "Friend?" James said in a condescending tone while Michael hissed. Kyle, on the other hand, is totally unbothered by these people's existence while he continues his introduction," I am here to give a statement and to hear what happened." The police officer showed the CCTV footage. Just like watching a movie scene, he saw how the villain and the protagonist fought to save the maiden in distress, only that, in this movie, he is not particularly fond of the male lead. After watching the footage, Kyle's reaction is stern. Michael is now in a holding cell while James is about to get some fresh air. Kyle called the attention of a police officer and gave him a business card. Obviously familiar with the name, the officer is stunned and is about to pay his respects when Kyle stops him. "You know what to do, right? I will not be happy to see even his shadows for a while," The officer nod in a firm confirmatory way. "Where is the villain?" Kyle asked the officer, and the latter showed him the way to the holding cell. "I bared with you for ten years...." Kyle was cut mid-sentence by Michael, "So you are showing your true colors now?" the latter laughed sarcastically after spitting the blood in his mouth. "You are JUST A FRIEND! KNOW YOUR PLACE, YOU BASTARD!" Michael shouted at Kyle. Kyle was shaken by those words for some seconds. However, his anger is still stronger. The feeling of being humiliated and annoyance overpowered him as he hit Michael's face on the ground of the cell. Blood almost covered the latter's face, and some of it found its way on Kyle's jeans. Kyle finally let go of Michael. He sighed as if a sign of liberation; he moved his hands as if washing them and tried to fix his wrinkled shirt. Kyle was almost out of the holding cell when the man lying almost lifeless on the ground shouted with all his might, "I might be out of the picture now, but you will never take my place. Someone will replace me, and that would never be you!" Michael's sarcastic laugh filled the room. Kyle can still hear it even after passing several cells, and he will continuously hear it for a very long time. The cold chilling night air met Kyle as he exits the police station and slightly opens his car's door when a masculine hand closes it. "Beer?" A familiar voice greeted him with a smile while holding a box of beer. Kyle's eyes narrowed at the sight of James; he just removed this man's hand on the car's door and is about to get inside his vehicle when James stops him. "Don't you think we need to settle things up?" "No," "Are you sure?" James shows Angel's car keys to Kyle, the sight of which made him almost jump off his car. James was stunned; something at the back of his mind questions the words he heard about this man in front of him a while back- "Friend." "Beer?" James asked Kyle again with a smile where the other simply looked annoyed but still forced a smile. It is bewildering how great liquor's power in manifesting a person's heart, as it is evident in the current and the following series of events. "We have been friends for ten years, TEN F*CK*NG YEARS!!!" Kyle shouted in thin air. Anyone who can see him would obviously know that he already lost the battle between himself and the several beer bottles and soju in front of him. "Yes," James interestingly answered Kyle while patting the latter's back. It is clear who won this round between the two. James is as sobber as he can be, he might be a little tipsy but nothing compared to the man who is almost half as sleep in front of him "You Fu*Ck*ng piece of shit, You just came out of nowherkdgnsdj!" Kyle says while chuckling and trying to point at James. The last words are inaudible for James, but he doesn't have the slightest interest to know what those last words are. A trivial smile showed on James' face; it is not something pleasant but rather something sort of mysterious and mischievous; it seems he realized that this is his chance and maybe his only chance to know the role that this man plays in his romance. "So, what do you feel about Angel?" He asked in a serious tone. His heart is pounding while his fist seems to prepare for the worst answer that he might hear. "Angel? Oh, Angel! Hahaha," Is the response of the person in front of him. "I am not sure, hahaha," James stands from the park chair where he was sitting. He is about to go off his way because it seems he will not get anything from this person. "Hopeless," he thought. James would have left Kyle there without a second thought if he did not see the person's name on the phone calling the latter. Kyle immediately answered the phone though he sounded more like a bird trying to talk than a decent human trying to make a phone conversation work. "Hey, Are you drunk?" The sweet voice from the other line said, and it is a voice that James is very familiar with. "You stupid ass-b*t*ch" Kyle shouted at Angel. James was shocked and instantly grabbed the phone from Kyle's hand. "Hi! I am sorry about that," James said sweetly. "Who is this?" Angel did not recognize the voice on the other line. "It is James. I was out drinking...." Angel cut him mid-sentence, "Is Kyle okay?" James' smile was painted out as fast as he heard the word "Kyle" he coldly answered "Yea," while kicking the nearest stone in front of his feet as if the stone did something wrong at him. "Can I ask you a favor?" Angel said in a sincere voice that sounded like a melody on James' ears. "Sure, anything," James said, smiling as if the person on the other line could see him as he almost ripped his mouth while smiling from ear to ear. "Can you please bring Kyle here to my house? He seems very drunk I am concern he might end up somewhere and bring harm to himself. " This request from the other line is like a bucket of ice water, poured to this poor gentleman without him knowing- his smile was gone and replaced by an annoyed look on his eyes. "Sure, no worries," Is what James said as he poured the remaining beer on Kyle's jeans, Kyle did not even budge. "See you in a bit, take care," The last word feels like a consolation, but for James, even this simple consolation is enough to make him move mountains. James felt slightly guilty for spilling beer on Kyle's jeans, so he took some paper towels and pat them a little. This time he noticed the bloodstains on the lower portion of the denim and murmured "blood," he looked at Kyle with questioning eyes," This person is hiding something; what are you hiding?" he said in a very slow tone while pushing Kyle's head down slightly with his index finger. James cleaned the table at the park that they used, put away the beer cans. Carried Kyle on his back and practically threw him in the back seat of the car. "YAA! Do you want to die, you piece of sh*t ..." Kyle must have hit something at the back, and James just giggled as if saying, "you deserve it" James is about to get inside the car when he hears a camera click from somewhere; he looks around and sees no one and thinks it must be the beer. He must have heard things because he is a bit tipsy. James starts the engine and drives towards Angel's house, totally unaware of the man in the shadows holding a camera watching their car as it leaves the park.
