Chapter 17 - One Door Apart

After he moved his wrist and stiffened his neck a little, Crowe prepared to go to the third floor to look for the girl who had sent him the distress signal. Dead bodies were lying near where he was walking. Some of them were still looking alright, while some of them were missing limbs. Of course, those dead bodies don't belong to humans, but they were dead zombies.

As a result of the fight between Crowe and those seven zombies in the corridor, the hallway was now only dark and silent, and the zombies hidden in random dormitory rooms were now gone.

While Crowe walked away unscathed, these zombies had finally been put to rest for good. His fighting had caused his hair to be messy from all the daring moves he made, his clothes were wrinkled, but his body sustained no damage. Not even his single strand of hair was touched by zombies. He easily killed off those six zombies that lunged out of the dorm with his [Intermediate Combat Technique] skill. He was unbeatable, fighting those zombies was nothing but a child's play for him.

With such strength, he was more confident that he would be able to live through this post-apocalyptic world. At the same time, after his combat, he also gained points. Crowe didn't care for it, it was the enjoyment and the improvement of his strength that he was after.

Even with a larger number of zombies in comparison to the first-floor corridor, Crowe was able to spend less time cleaning out the hallway. The time he spent on the second floor, including searching the dormitories, bathrooms, and other places were only 18 minutes.

Crowe's footsteps were slow as he walked up the stairs step by step. He was pacing his breathing, and his body was extremely well-composed. This posture would allow him to react and respond better in the moment of crisis. It was inevitable that with his improved strength and ability, he would feel a little proud but he knew that he couldn't get too carried away with his improved abilities. He still maintained his emotions and rationality as it was important to be smart in this situation. If he started acting arrogant or reckless, he would become a brainless brute and this would be his death sentence.

Crowe knew deep down that he couldn't risk being bitten. He wasn't confident that he could resist the invasion of the virus and not be turned into a zombie, even with the Infinite Modification System. He soon reached the third floor, which was the place where the girl from the distress signal showed she was.

"From the given direction. I should be heading this way."

The image of the girl that was waving her arms at them flashed across Crowe's mind. Based on his memory, Crowe was looking at the correct dormitory where the girl supposedly was.

Since he had already arrived, he was not in a hurry. He would still have plenty of time to rescue the girl even after he cleared all zombies on this floor. Crowe stomped into the dormitory area on the left corridor. The sound of his footsteps suddenly made all the zombies launch out of their room and Crowe immediately took action.

His attack was efficient and swift, his alloy blade flew out of his hand and that zombie was instantly killed. It was just a common zombie so it did not take up much of his time. If Crowe wanted to, he could easily get rid of a zombie almost immediately.

He walked and looked around in the corridor on the left and cleared out all space in this area. Crowe only found two zombies. They were killed instantly in one hit. Crowe didn't take any unnecessary risks so that he could ensure his own safety.

'As I thought, the number of zombies has decreased so much but maybe there are more zombies there.'

Crowe walked out of the innermost dormitory and thought to himself.

He had a sound mind and wouldn't jump to any conclusion without seeing the whole picture. As he kept walking, time passed like water flowing through a river. Crowe finally reached the corridor on the other side.

Roar!

In the outermost dormitory, a disgusting-looking zombie suddenly burst out of the door. Its foul-smelling mouth was dripping with blood and saliva. Crowe didn't flinch. His footsteps showed no signs of moving, he just stood there.

His right arm was holding the alloy blade, he lifted it like a hammer when the zombie was only a foot away from him. The zombie froze there. A straight white line appeared in the middle, extending from the navel to the top of its head. In the next second, the entire pale body skin was split open from the middle, and each side of the zombie's body fell to the ground. Crowe turned back, ignoring the body lying on the ground in front of him, and moved forward.

The only way for Crowe to be sure was to open the door and check with his own eyes that no zombies were still there. From the first floor to the third floor, some of the dormitories were open, some were closed, and some didn't even have doors. He could clearly see the broken pieces of the door lying on the ground. Apparently, zombies could sense if there's a human in the room and that's why they had broken into these dormitories.

Along the way, Crowe saw both zombies and many dead bodies. These dead bodies were all in a dormitory with their doors locked. There was nothing to eat or drink in there since there was a food and water shortage during the virus outbreak, they weren't killed by zombies but they starved to death.

When he reached Room 315, Crowe twisted the doorknob but couldn't open it. Crowe raised his eyebrows, raised his powerful arm, and was about to break the door with a punch. He could have done it very easily because he had done it many times and had become familiar with it. However, just as Crowe's fist was about to punch through the door, he suddenly stopped.

"That girl should be inside the dorm room."

The thought that popped up was the reason why Crowe didn't break into the door. There was no sound coming from the dorm room. It was as if there was no living person inside and because of that, Crowe was even more sure of what happened. He had just finished checking the other two dormitories nearby, and the other two empty dormitories that didn't even have a door.

It was impossible that the girl asking for help was in those two dormitories. He let go of the thoughts of finding the girl inside these dormitories. He decided that after he got rid of all the zombies here, he would try to contact this girl again. He didn't want to be swarmed by zombies while talking to the girl.

Sandra, who was waiting in the dorm room, could hear her own pumping heartbeat. She heard the doorknob being twisted and realized that zombies wouldn't do that. As far as she knew, during her time when she was hiding here with Eileen, no zombie had ever tried to twist their doorknob. The person on the other side of the door was most likely the owner of the armored vehicle that entered the dormitory previously. Even so, she didn't act incautiously. Instead, she carefully walked to the door and tried to listen to the sound from outside.

All she heard was steady footsteps that slowly faded into the distance.
