It kept ringing in his ears. There was a voice calling out to him. Something was there, and it needed to go to it. Whatever that thing was, Gaufrid was sure it was something he needed. He had left his house and climbed over the walls of the town. All the other elves were asleep and unaware of what exactly was going on.
Gaufrid jumped down to the ground, and for the first time in his life, he saw what lay beyond the walls.
Darkness. It was pitch black.
Elves could see relatively well in the dark. Normally, Gaufrid would have been able to see something if there was even a bit of moonlight. Yet, what he saw was absolute darkness. His ears perked up as he heard the sound of soft footsteps. The footsteps sounded slow... almost mechanical. Gaufrid pressed his back against the wall behind him.
When he looked up, he could still see the moon. Yet, when he looked forward, there was nothing but darkness.
