Chereads / A Glitching of Jeremiah / Chapter 20 - The most dangerous questions

Chapter 20 - The most dangerous questions

It was a Thursday afternoon, Jeremiah is sitting at the kitchen table all alone. No one is home, his parents are both at work and his siblings are out for the afternoon. The room is dim because the house lights are all off, but the room isn't dark because Jeremiah opened the window. There is a light rain outside and it is slightly windy. It is a 65 degree day and Jeremiah opened the window so that only a screen is there. He could feel very small drops of water on his arm but it is not annoying, he can feel a cool breeze on his face and it is very pleasant. Jeremiah sits at the table facing this window while he thinks.

"That dream, what was it? Do I really believe that Mr. Weiss is bad? Maybe he is. He probably is a bad guy, but it's not like I know him enough to actually say. He could just do strange things and act strange." Jeremiah thinks to himself. "If he is truly a bad guy, why doesn't he actually commit crimes? He himself could get away with them fairly easy." Jeremiah continues. "But I can't just confront him if I'm not even sure what I'm confronting him for. For acting weird? Or for eating pixels? Or for the dream I had of him? Or for the fact that he could lock a human in a virtual world? Or for and I could go on and on with this but… I wonder what he knows." Jeremiah finished.

Jeremiah sits there for another 20 minutes trying to register who Dr. Weiss could be. He comes to the conclusion that whatever will happen when he confronts Dr. Weiss, he should be prepared for tragedy.

"I want to understand what Mr. Weiss actually is. Is he human? Is he something other?" Jeremiah thinks to himself before getting up and leaving.

It was the next day. The next morning. Jeremiah had been getting ready to go wherever it is he wants to go, he hasn't decided yet. Maybe he will go to a social place and meet new people or maybe he will go to his school. Perhaps he will go to confront Dr. Weiss about himself.

Jeremiah heads off and goes to… you guessed it… meet Dr. Weiss. Jeremiah knew he could catch Dr. Weiss at his newly purchased Internet cafe. The cafe was already Jeremiah's favorite hangout.

Jeremiah walks over to Dr. Weiss who had been sitting at his desk in the front of the cafe. He paces back and forth unsure of what to say first, he is not use to approaching people in situations like these. These aren't typical situations humans would normally encounter and find themselves to be in. What happens next is unpredictable.

"You have something you would like to say to me? Jeremiah?" Dr. Weiss says to Jeremiah. Somehow he knew Jeremiah would approach him, it just doesn't sit well with Dr. Weiss. "What do you want to say?" Dr. Weiss asks once again. Jeremiah didn't expect Dr. Weiss to speak first.

"I..I..I wanted to know—" Jeremiah couldn't finish what he wanted to say.

"You wanted to know what? You wanted to know more about me? Or you wanted to know if I am human?" Dr. Weiss asked but not seriously.

"No it's just that… The other day, I saw you in the basement and you—" Jeremiah didn't finish.

"You should really finish your statements and stop pausing in the middle." Dr. Weiss said to Jeremiah in a serious tone.

"I saw you in the basement and you were eating something strange. Why?" Jeremiah finished his sentence this time.

"Yes, I knew you were there but I don't care. It doesn't matter who witnessed what I did. I caused no harm to anyone. Am I right?" Dr. Weiss explained.

"Yes, it's true, you did not harm anyone but why do you eat that?" Jeremiah asked getting ahead of himself.

"Do you care? I suggest that you don't." Dr. Weiss said with an expressionless face. He has a very serious look on his face.

"I had a dream of you." Jeremiah said to Dr. Weiss ready to risk it all.

"Oh. Is that so?" Said Dr. Weiss in a dramatic intimidating way.

"Yes." Jeremiah plainly said. It is very bold of him to use a one word answer with Dr. Weiss.

"May I ask? Why did you have a dream about me?" Asked Dr. Weiss with nothing else to say.

"I'm not sure. Maybe if you weren't so strange, I wouldn't think you were dangerous." Jeremiah said straight up.

"The longer I converse with you, the more blunt you become." Dr. Weiss answers and pretends to get sidetracked.

"In my dream—" Jeremiah said bringing the conversation back.

"Here we go." Dr. Weiss says in an almost annoyed like manner.

"You were devouring people who were covered in the pixels you like to eat." Jeremiah explained.

"Why do you think that is?" Dr. Weiss toyed with Jeremiah.

"I'm not sure, I don't know. Maybe you're dangerous. Are you dangerous?" Jeremiah finally asks Dr. Weiss the question he has been wanting to ask since the conversation first began.

"What a question. You phrased that question just right. I am indeed dangerous." Dr. Weiss confessed to Jeremiah.

"If you're dangerous, shouldn't you stay away from people?" Jeremiah says in concern.

"I said I am dangerous, that is true but I never said I would cause harm to people or anything for that matter. If I wanted to go ballistic and destroy the world I could get away with it but that is not my goal." Dr. Weiss said to Jeremiah.

"Then what do you want? Someone with your abilities, someone with so much power, would pose a giant threat to normal people." Jeremiah said in reply to Dr. Weiss.

"Are you normal?" Dr. Weiss replied back to Jeremiah.

"Maybe." Jeremiah says.

"You're not, so you needn't worry about me." Dr. Weiss assured Jeremiah.

"Why?" Asks Jeremiah.

"It just doesn't matter." Dr. Weiss says getting slightly annoyed again.

"What are your abilities? What can you do?" Jeremiah says out of nowhere.

"You shouldn't ask questions like that. You've asked so many questions about me, too many. This is the most dangerous question you've asked." Dr. Weiss says in the most serious tone he's spoken in all day. He never actually answered the question, he simply walked away from Jeremiah.
