Chapter 4 - Chapter 4.

"Can you please tell me that what are we doing in the mall, when we should have been attending classes in school?" I asked Mia as she dragged me around the shopping mall.

"Shhh...don't say a thing, we are almost there," Mia quickly silenced me and continued to drag me to someplace that I don't know. She finally stopped in front of a shop, I don't know what's the name of the shop but it looked quite elegant and fancy. Several long gowns and dresses were displayed on the window and they all look magnificent.

Are we going to do window shopping? Honestly, I don't have any problem with that.

She then pulled me inside the shop and honestly the dresses were so pretty and so out of my league. But where is Mia? I asked myself when I finally realized that Mia wasn't with me anymore. I quickly scanned the shop for any signs of Mia and finally found her rummaging through a rack of elegant party gowns. I went up to her and tapped her shoulder lightly, she didn't seem to notice me. So I grabbed her elbow and turned her towards me.

"What?" she asked me. I gave her a questioning look. "Can you please tell me why are we here?" I tried to ask her again.

"For shopping," she said in a duh tone and went back to rummaging the dresses in the rack of clothes, which only worked as fuel to my rising irritation that was quickly evolving into anger.

"For what occasion?"

"For prom," she said once again in a duh tone.

"Prom?" I asked, completely dumbfounded.

"Don't tell me you forgot about prom?" She asked with a horrified look plastered on her pretty face. I just gave her a sheepish smile and she let out an annoying huff.

"Well that's a good thing that we still have time as the prom is next week, so we have enough time to buy a beautiful dress for you and also a handsome date for you to go with," she gushed out in utter excitement and once again started dragging me deeper into the maze of dresses.

She finally stopped near a rack of short sparkly party dresses and started rummaging through them like a crazy person. Pretty soon a shop attendant approached us. "Good afternoon, can I help you guys with anything?" She asked us politely. Mia politely refused her saying that we will be able to fend for ourselves and started to rummage through clothes once again like a maniac. I swear the shop attendant would have been weirded out with our behavior and might be thinking how to kick us out of her shop politely.

She continued to rummage to hunt for the perfect dress. After going through of dresses, most of which in my opinion looked perfect on her but she didn't. Finally, she came out of the dressing room wearing the last dress. And I swear that she has to buy it, she looks so gorgeous in it.

"You have to take it, Mia, " I gushed out in excitement.

"Really?" she asked a little unsure. I nodded my head in response and she just giggled loudly before skipping into the changing room to change out of her gown.

I too decided to check out some dresses to wear. I looked around the shop and my wandering eyes finally rested on a beautiful dress. I pulled it out and showed it to Mia, who had already changed out of her dress and now wearing her regular clothes. Mia ushered me to go and try out the dress. I went inside the nearest empty changing room, stripping out the normal clothes I pulled on the dress over my body. Luckily the zip of the dress was pretty low so I had no problem in zipping it up. I came out of the changing room so Mia can see me in the dress and this was her reaction "OMG Mel, you look so beautiful in this, we are so going to buy it," Mia gushed out. I chuckled at her expression and checked out the price, the dress of reasonable price, so I decided to go for it.

After we bought our dresses we went to buy some shoes to go with our dresses. I bought myself a 4-inch black pump and Mia got herself 5-inch red stilettoes, and after buying all the necessary things like makeup, accessories, etc., we went to the food court to stuff our stomachs with some junk food.

TIME SKIP TO THE PROM NIGHT.

I wrapped the white fluffy towel around me as soon as I stepped out of the shower. I am really nervous about tonight. I just hope that I don't make a complete fool of myself and the boy with whom I'm going. I did all the things that one usually does after coming from a bath. I put on my bathrobe and then styled my hair in a bun. I then applied light makeup and checked my reflection on the mirror, I guess I look okay. I put on my dress and zipped it up. It had a net type of material on the upper part of the dress decorated with sparkly beads. The skirt of the dress was of light peach color which was tight at my waist and then flowed down. I took out the black pumps that I got from the store a week ago and wore them.

I went downstairs, only to see my parents waiting by the staircase with a camera in their hands. "Mom seriously?" I asked her, smiling lightly at her excitement, as she took pictures of me. We all then went into the living room to wait who was cute boy-next-door kinda a guy from my German class and by the way his name is Niel Watts. He asked me out to be his date just two days ago and I agreed after some thinking. He told me that he will pick me up at seven and now only 5 minutes were left. Just as the clock struck 7 the doorbell rang. I opened the door to reveal my handsome date Niel who was dressed in a dashing black suit with a white dress shirt and black tie underneath his coat. His dirty blonde hair was swept to one side and his green eyes gleamed in the darkness. He was carrying a bouquet of pink roses in his hands. "Hi Melissa you look....beautiful, wow," he said while handing me those flowers. My cheeks turned pink as I blushed furiously at his words. "Thanks, you look good too and these are beautiful," I said slowly, trying to control my reddened cheeks. I took the flowers and gave them to my mom to place them in the vase.

"So are you ready to go?" He asked me.

"Yeah, let's go," I said and grabbed my clutch and put my phone, some money, and house keys in it.

"Bring her back by twelve young men," my dad warned him playfully and he simply nodded his head and gave them a small smile.

"Enjoy honey," my mom said from behind.

We drove to the venue in Niel's car. Mia and Ryan were already waiting at the entrance of the venue and they were accompanied by their respective dates, Vince D'costa was Mia's date and Hadley Drew was Ryan's date. Did I forget to mention that Vince, Hadley, and Niel are also one of the 5 students who are awarded the scholarship? Well, I did now. And the good thing is we all will be studying in New York together.

Together we entered the building and let me say that the Homecoming committee did a great job in decorating this place. The hall was decorated to be like a medieval age royal ball and it was a masquerade. The masks on the display case were utterly hideous. Good for us that we have brought our own masks. We put on the mask before entering the hall.

Upon entering the hall we were instantly greeted by our other friends and we all started talking about random stuff like our plans after graduation and other basic stuff. Suddenly a pop song started to blast through the speakers and we all hit the dance floor. After dancing for some time in those fast songs, soft romantic slow music started. Everyone grabbed their partner's hands and swayed to the soft beat of the music. Me being unable to find Niel in this crowd of teenagers decided to head back to the refreshments table. I was about to walk away but suddenly a hand seized mine and turned me around with force and another arm encircled around my waist pulling me to a hard chest. To brace myself from the intruder, I put my hands on the air which landed flat on a hard chest earning a small oomph from me. Luckily I was able to create some gap between us by using my hands. I slowly moved my graze upwards and my blue eyes came in contact with a pair of familiar rich chocolate brown eyes. His face was covered with a beautiful black mask. He was wearing a three-piece grey suit with a striped grey and white tie, which looked pretty expensive. All in all this man practically screamed money and fortune. But his eyes were the most striking feature in contrast to his clothing. Those eyes held so many emotions in them, pain, heartbreak, abuse, suffering hidden behind those void chocolate brown eyes.

The song came to an end and his grip slowly loosened around my waist, his eyes held mine in an intense staring contest and before I knew it he was walking away from me and disappeared among the crowd of students.

"Students attention please," the voice of our principal boomed through the speakers and we turned to face the stage.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our chief guest who also happens to be the owner of the company which hosted our special scholarship program.....Mr. Norman Blackford," Every single person present in the room stopped what they were doing and stared at the stage, as a man in a grey suit walked on the stage. I let out a low gasp when I realized that it was the same man from the bakery and the same person with whom I danced tonight.

God shoot me now.

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I want to congratulate all of the..."

I completely drifted off for the rest of the speech.

I was broken out of my reverie by the loud clapping of the spectators as the chief guest ended his speech. But the last words of his speech troubled me the whole night, as he spoke it, all the while looking straight in my eyes.

"I hope that we all will be working closely, very closely...."
